Detail from the Kitching War Memorial Window at Hull Minster

Designed and executed by James Ballantine FSA of Edinburgh.

The window expresses gratitude for Victory in the First World War.

Notice the introduction of WWI new inventions: the tank, submarine, and biplane into the design at the bottom.

See the whole window at Hull Minster, Kingston Upon Hull.

Pauline Boty, 1938-66

Self-portrait

Artist Pauline Boty was a central figure in the growing British Pop Art movement. This self-portrait was made while she was still a student at the Royal College of Art. It is the only stained glass object in the Collection.

Boty later focussed on painting, and her representations of women, including Marilyn Monroe, were radical in portraying female pleasure and desire.

Tragically, her brilliant career was to be very short. Boty died of cancer aged only 28 and her work was largely forgotten until interest revived from the 1990s.

Stained glass, about 1958

National Portrait Gallery, London
