I love this blog. Everything i see is so calming and familiar. I don't even eat dairy or meat anymore and I'm enamored by all the pictures. They contain power that comes from telling you a story you understand.
I can taste some of the pictures. They are tasty. Thanks!
What beautiful words... thank you! And power to more plant based diets! I haven't eaten meat since I was 12 and tbh that might part of the reason why some of this nostalgia appeals to me so much, tastes encapsulated only in childhood ... all the sausages and meats in jelly... ahhh
this is fucking beautiful
At your service 🤝❤️

Do it! This blog isn't exactly active anymore but searching for the pictures was always good fun. A very calming kind of escapism. And with your own pictures it'd be just That much more badass!!

Hi! Just started following and I love your blog, even though I don't have nostalgia for any of this food like it seems you do. One question; there's a small eastern european grocery kind of near my house, but I only speak English so I'm not entirely sure what the things they sell there are. Are there any foods in particular that you'd recommend/have particular nostalgia for? They mostly sell packaged foods but have a small deli.
wow! wow wow! This is not a lot of information to go off of, I myself am from the Baltics and therefore my food nostalgia does not encompass the entirety of eastern european cuisine, but let’s give it a shot - the first thing that comes to mind is the great variety of dairy products, curd cheese/farmers cheese/twarog whatever you call it in both savoury and sweet forms, plain curd cheese with some sour cream, fresh dill and green oinions (!!), salt and pepper is *chefs kiss*.. also curd cheese pancakes with sour cream and some kind of berry jam.. kefir!!!! I am a big fan of kefir - it is savoury fremented milk, yoghurt-like except way better and is a wonderful thing to drink when you wake up hungover. Also today is literally summer solstice, so happy motherfucking summer solstice!, and if you can find some proper caraway cheese (Jāņu cheese, jāņu siers) and have that with a glass of beer, you will be transported to a flowering field beside a bonfire in the nighttime when the air smells like heaven and mosquitos are attempting to eat you alive. And grill some shashlik, if you're into that sort of thing. With marinated onions!!!!! Another must have is dark rye bread, the ultimate superior bread of all breads, but not the soft kind - it's hard to explain what I mean by this so just google rankas rupjmaize and that's the one you want to look for. Warm it up, spread some butter and honey on it, or you can try putting some kind of sticky melted cheese spread on it and dip it in green onions. Or just cut up some strawberries, put sugar on them, pour milk over them and eat it like a soup for a timeless eastern european childhood dessert. Also works with forest blueberries. I'm pretty sure you should be able to find some condensed milk, or even better - BOILED condensed milk, eat it with a spoon or do literally anything with it, it is maybe the most agreeable delicious eastern european treat. I am personally very fond of kissel, especially rhubarb kissel. (it is also very easy to make if you find some rhubarb). I'm guessing there could be stereotypical kissel based soviet bistro desserts available in the deli, so I'd suggest you try those. I could go on like this for a very long time (hence I have this blog), so I have to stop myself at some point. Admittedly I have been a vegetarian for a long time which itself really isn't very eastern european so I can't give you much guidance with meats, however if you somehow find lamprey in jelly I would highly recommend that, as off putting as it may seem at first. Good luck on your easterneauropean JOURNEY!!!
