i SCREAMED when i heard andy beshear come after jd vance for pretending to be from appalachia. a dem capable of pulling kentucky of all places is a strategic fucking vice president pick.

HE AIN'T ONE OF US.

Man, this kind of shit is why I love red state Democrats. Do you see how deftly he's playing the game to invite people in to support him? He's so careful about the insults he sends to make sure they go to the right place and don't slip off and hit potential allies. He's so careful to point out all the reasons that poor working people have to be proud of their history without either inflaming "us vs them" tensions or putting anyone else down.

And damn, that man learned from Beto O Rourke's catastrophic fuck up, in which he sacrificed an incredible level of Texan momentum and organizing and trust in an idiot leap towards personal gain as a presidential candidate. That's such an elegant set of demurrals about his personal ambitions and focus towards his current constituency. Beautiful work. Makes it look easy.

Love a red state Dem, frankly. The thing about red state progressives is that they know what the stakes are. They know how to throw punches—you have to, to succeed, you can't coast on party shit—but they know how to minimize inflammation when they do it and they know how to find the things that matter and focus in on them. You have to know how to build coalitions when you're working in a red state, and you have to know how to find common ground with people without compromising your own values.

Lovely work. Excellent message control. ("JD Vance is a man without conviction, but Donald Trump has 37" is one hell of a line.) Great job refusing to be baited by anything remotely resembling a "Dems in disarray" narrative or tempted by gossipy "oh what if you were VP" shit. Love to see it.

If you like the idea of a black Little Mermaid but aren’t interested in the new movie, please check out Once On This Island

Aside from the actual mermaid part, it has many of the story beats of the original Little Mermaid but set in semi modern day on a Caribbean island

The fact that the characters are black matters as the story deals with struggles of colorism, there’s a Voodoo inspired pantheon of gods, and in general the music is really good and in parts both funny and moving

MY FRIEND, I ABSOLUTELY CAN!!!! 🥰 Starting from the beginning…

PART ONE: ORIGINAL FILMANIA PRODUCTION & FATE

It’s 2019-20, you’re Mile Phakphum Romsaithong, a very rich socialite who plays guitar. You’re bored and you’ve been thinking about getting into acting, and have been offered misc. BL casting opportunities before (1), but never really felt like any of them were For You, so you turned them down.

Then, one day, you find out that there is a BL currently casting from the studio Filmania, where the male lead is based on you (2), at least your public persona/physically/whatever. Being a puppy of a man, you are delighted, and go read the script, and then the books, and decide you’ll go to the casting call for it.

At casting call, you re-meet Apo Nattawin Wattanagitiphat (3), who you went to college with and had a giant crush on (4). You guys hit it off IMMEDIATELY, chemistry unhinged, and get cast as Kinn and Porsche. Apo takes it, even though he has historically had a bad experience with the Thai acting industry (5). You are delighted by this incidence of FATE!!!!!!

PART TWO: IF YOU DON’T HAVE FATE ON YOUR SIDE STORE-BOUGHT IS FINE

The show gets dropped (6) Something something the authors, something something the company, whatever. I assume, if you are Mile, you are very sad! And if you’re Apo you’re also pretty sad, because it seemed like for once even with all the industry BS you had a cool dude on your side who you hit it off with, and it was gonna be a cool show. On the heels of that, if you are Mile, and have stacks of money, and see your college crush who is an unbelievable actor about to re-give up on acting and call it a wash, you are like, “wait, I have stacks of money and know everyone”.

So you, Mile, call up the head of the small talent agency you’re signed with, Be On Cloud, which is really just your buddy Pond Krisda Witthayakhajorndet in a fake mustache and a trench coat, and go, hey! So! Have you ever wanted to make television? I have a man here I CANNOT allow to be sad under any circumstances, and also, we’re really good at this and there’s an audience here.

PART THREE: BE ON CLOUD, KINNPORSCHE TAKE TWO!!!!

Pond, being just as unhinged as Mile, thinks about it for a second, and is like. Well. How different can making television be from running an event planning company, which is my real job (7). It’s just calling up a bunch of different guys who are good at their jobs and putting them in one place. And I know so many different guys! Let’s do it!

They get the rights (handwaves this I don’t know anything about it) and jump into production. They get their shit together UNREALISTICALLY quickly (6), and on top of that, since they’re starting from scratch and they’re just A Bunch Of Guys led by Pond and Mile, they decide that their priorities are #1 making art and #2 making Apo happy. With regards to #1, they rework the script (8), hire the best acting coaches money can afford, and put the cast through character-building and intimacy workshops. With regards to #2, they toss out all the industry bullshit that has sucked for him in the past – no more crew/cast hierarchy (9), no more homophobia on-set (10), no more fake fanservice (11).

FINALE: MIRACLES IF U BELIEVE ETC.

Magically, it turns out, when you create a great working environment, you get really, really good TV!!!!! Which means that their unhinged plan succeeded beyond their wildest dreams, and now Mile & Apo are internationally famous superstars who hang out 24/7 with their squad of 16 close friends, and we get to watch them do it. And it has been, genuinely, a fucking privilege.

To end this tale with a personal note, one of the reasons I allowed myself to get so invested in KinnPorsche so fast is because it was evident from every aspect of it – the show itself, the BTS, the actors interviews – that the people working on this show both really cared about the show and were genuinely having a great time. There is nothing like seeing art made by people who are passionate about making it!

Their enthusiasm, their hard work, and their obvious enjoyment of the process & each other’s company are what made me feel like I could trust what they were making, because you could tell no matter what else it was, it was from the heart. And that’s really something special! Especially in this day and age!!

And even though they could pull it off this time because of the circumstances (financial and social), I hope that it shows BL television CAN be made in a way that keeps the actors comfortable and safe and happy, and encourages change for the better across the industry as a whole. KinnPorsche shouldn’t be the last wild BL passion project; it should be the first one of a new wave. (bangs gavel) Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

I literally feel refreshed after watching black swan where are the psychological crazy girl movies with black people that aren’t written by tyler perry

There def should be more in the world but here's some I could think of that sort of edge close. Some of these are pretty well known but hopefully this is helpful to someone who may have missed them:

Us (2019) - probably the closest match to Black Swan, more horror/sci-fi but def has that girl vs her psyche storyline, also Lupita Nyong'o is the crazy girl and she does it amazing, like what an insanely expressive actor

His House (2020) - not so much a crazy girl movie but it's about a South Sudan refugee couple trying to make it work in England, and both the wife and husband have to work through some trauma via psychological horror

Ma (2019) - Hesitant to rec this movie because it's not necessarily a... good movie, but Octavia Spencer really performs and gets to be so unhinged LOL. Very straight up horror tho.

Lovecraft Country - this is a series, not a movie, but pretty much the entire ensemble is black. Of that ensemble are multiple rad black lady characters, some who get really satisfying acts of revenge. Awesome monster horror/sci-fi/thriller.

Salt of the Earth (1954), dir. Herbert J. Biberman

Damn, son.

EVERYONE SHOULD WATCH SALT OF THE EARTH

Avatar
em578

Salt of the Earth actually has a crazy interesting history- OP already said it was made in 1954, but that was in the middle of the Red Scare (communism scary cold war hysteria)

Congress’s anti-communism target fell hard on Hollywood, and those in the industry who were suspected of communism at all were blacklisted from all jobs, because studio’s didn’t want to face backlash from Congress

Salt of the Earth was made nearly 100% with blacklisted crew members from Hollywood, and had such difficulty finding actors that they hired local citizens and miners from the actual strike the plot is based on. There were only 5 trained actors involved, and one of them (Rosaura Revueltas, the woman in the gif) was deported to Mexico before they finished filming on accusations of communism, with no proof and no substance. The filming was plagued with police harassment and threats (according to my professor they were shot at more than once), and the local union hall was burned down.

The movie itself not only covers a real 1950′s labor strike demanding safer and more equal labor conditions for Mexican-American employees, but after the miners were facing arrest, their wives and children took up the strike in their place. The movie’s combination of blacklisted crew, civil rights and feminist message, and pro-union plot (during the red scare) got the movie blacklisted and only 12 theaters in the entire United States would show the movie- it was successful in Europe, but didn’t actually achieve viewership in the US until the 60′s

Top 10 indigenous films of all time

Indigenous cinema, at least in its contemporary form, is only 40 years old, and the fact that there are films to be left off a list like this is testament to its rapid development and to the artists who have taken up the camera to tell their stories.
Here are 10 amazing films that are a great starting point for a journey into indigenous cinema history.
1. Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner, 2001 (Canada)
The first Inuktitut language feature is also the most important film in Canadian history, bringing epic film making to a Northern legend. It won Official Selection at the 2001 Cannes International Film Festival, and remains the highest grossing indigenous film in Canadian history.
2. Bastion Point Day 507, 1980 / Incident at Restigouche, 1984 (New Zealand / Canada)
These two activist documentaries were often paired on the festival circuit and are among the most important films in contemporary indigenous cinema.  Directors Merata Mita and Alanis Obomsawin seemingly willed indigenous cinema into life with these two endlessly fascinating historical documents.
3. Bedevil, 1993 (Australia)
Tracey Moffat’s dreamscape/ghost story began indigenous cinema’s move away from traditional cinematic narrative structures and remains an under seen masterpiece.
4. The Dead Lands, 2014 (New Zealand)
Toa Fraser’s martial arts epic is bloody and bold, recreating pre-contact New Zealand and featuring remarkable, bone crunching performances. Coming soon to theaters.
5. Four Sheets to the Wind, 2007 (U.S)
Sterlin Harjo’s gripping feature is a descendant of Smoke Signals, portraying contemporary Indigenous life with an unflinching eye and open heart. It won a Special Jury Prize at Sundance for Tamara Podemski’s remarkable performance.
6. Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance, 1993 (Canada)
Alanis Obomsawin’s documentary epic chronicles the Oka Crisis in Quebec and helped shift the dialogue around Indigenous issues in Canada and globally. It was the first documentary to ever win the Best Canadian Feature award at the Toronto International Film Festival.
7. Once Were Warriors, 1994 (New Zealand)
Lee Tamahori’s ferocious and exhilarating portrait of an urban Maori family was the first indigenous feature to have a truly global presence. Among the highest grossing films in New Zealand history.
8. Rhymes for Young Ghouls, 2013 (Canada)
Jeff Barnaby’s debut feature brings the anger to indigenous cinema, a clarion call for both the cinematic community and the indigenous community. A director to watch for years to come.
9. Samson and Delilah, 2009 (Australia)
Warwick Thornton’s Camera D’or winner is a searing depiction of modern life in Australia and a marvel of naturalism and restrained storytelling.
10. Smoke Signals, 1998 (U.S)
Chris Eyre’s road movie based on Sherman Alexie’s screenplay is a touchstone for indigenous cinema, bringing humour to a story of contemporary Indigenous life. Also features the core of young performers such as Adam Beach, Michelle St. John, Irene Bedard and Gary Farmer who would go on to star in numerous other films in the ensuing years.
More films not listed here — Ten Canoes, Charlie’s Country, Patu!, Barking Water, Trudell, Before Tomorrow, Mohawk Girls.

Last time I asked for recs but I missed out on more recent movies so here’s a list of animated movies you might have missed out on… Part 2! :) (as per last time; This post will have multiple links (to the trailers of the movies) so tumblr might try to “shadowban” it, please reblog or save somewhere else if you want to keep it.)

In 1882, a young Russian aristocrat goes on an epic adventure to find out what happened to her grandfather and save her family’s reputation. This french animation have slipped under the radar for a lot of people, which is unfortunate because compared to a lot of the “simpler” stories in animations made for children as target audience, it’s this movies strong point.

A thousand years ago, one boy with a dream of becoming a great warrior is abducted with his sister and taken to a land far away from home. Thrown into a world where greed and injustice rule all, Bilal finds the courage to raise his voice and make a change. This movie is made in the United Arab Emirates about Bilal ibn Rabah’s start in life.

A bold ten-year-old Sudanese boy befriends a young giraffe and a kind Bedouin, who takes them on a splendid journey via a hot-air balloon as far as the palace of King Charles X of France. The style in this movie is so gorgeous, much like classic western animation! French-Belgian movie.

Princes who have been turned into green Dwarfs seek the kiss of the most beautiful girl in order to break the spell. At the same time, a princess is looking for her lost father. A fairy tale-parody with a twist. This korean movie caught a lot of unwarranted slack before being released due to a very gross ad. The ending credits are especially very cute.

The story centers on domestic house cat Francis and the grisly feline murders taking place in his new neighborhood. I would recommended people to watch this movie based on style and animation alone, but there’s a lot of… adult themes including gore and sex. Very strange in a who-the-fuck-is-this-movie-marketed-for??-way but aesthetically pleasing. Made in Germany.

Fei-Fei’s mother dies when she’s young and when she notices her father moving on, she takes comfort in a mythological story her mother used to tell her. Made by legendary animator Glenn Keane that worked on all your favourite Disney-movies.

A man with Alzheimer struggle to adjust to life in an elderly care facility. There he makes new friends and reflect on the disease. There some really strong themes of love and friendship. Watching it, I felt it was actually really refreshing seeing an animated movie with main characters (and issues) that are not just teens! Quite a bittersweet watch. Some of the scenography is also really gorgeous. Made in Spain.

Lupin III  (known character from several anime series and movies) goes on a grand adventure to uncover the secrets of the Bresson Diary, which is tied to the legacy of his famous grandfather. Sort of a really strange story at times but wonderful animation and a playfulness that reminds me of those cartoons you used to watch as a kid!

why you should watch lindsay ellis’s “into the omegaverse: how a fanfic trope landed in federal court”:

  • she has to explain a/b/o to her audience
  • she managed to get TWELVE other youtubers to voice act for reenactments, including hbomberguy, jenny nicholson, todd in the shadows, sarah z, princess weekes, and an entire legality segment with legaleagle
  • every time she has to explain knotting she just blows up a balloon that, unfortunately, has sonic the hedgehog on it,
  • she says the word “superwholock” about four and a half minutes in
  • absolutely insane amounts of legal fights over het a/b/o including perjury
  • within the first 24 hours after upload lindsay was already sued for it

I watched this video and now am a worse person because of it.

I highly suggest that you watch it too

  • the author of the offending book is attacking lindsay and it’s a war now
  • she tried to dmca takedown lindsay’s video
  • youtube got the takedown notice and actually said no
  • patreon offered to pay lindsay’s legal fees should anything happen
  • jenny nicholson reprises her oscar-worthy role as the villain
  • “I FEEL LINSAY ELLIS IS A MENACE, A THREAT TO MY CHILD, AND IS MONETIZING DEFAMATION FOR PERSONAL FINANCIAL GAIN”
  • a shitton of other authors get dragged into this
  • AO3 GETS DRAGGED INTO THIS
  • lindsay is called a “patreon personality”
  • she awoos
  • lindsay wears a wolf hat for almost all of the video
  • which just reminds you that this is all about wolf erotica
