gonna grow you a place safer than this

@burningcomputerpersona

Currently obsessed with american pop punk band The Wonder Years. This blog is mostly just a collection of things that I'm interested in at the moment, whether it's music or a new fandom or just queer memes in general. I'll probably appear once in a while to reblog a bunch of posts about a new obsession that you didn't follow me for and then vanish off into the unknown again. Current interests include: the wonder years, spanish love songs, hot mulligan, against me, doctor who, etc.

if you’re from Ukraine, you have a uterus and don’t want to be pregnant:

1. First of all AVOID AT ANY COST people and sites that have the name of “Ordo Iuris” or “pro-prawo do życia” (translate: pro-life). If you see a logo of fetus inside a heart, run.

Pro-prawo do życia foundation informed that one woman from Ukraine contacted them, asking for abortion. She barely spoke polish, which they admitted without any shame, that’s why she thought that if they talk about abortion, they can provide it. They informed that they “explained children are not killed in Poland” and that now she’s “in a safe place where no harm can come to her and her baby”. I don’t have words for how fucking inhuman it is to manipulate traumatized woman into carrying pregnancy she’s not ready for since she’s a refugee with no finances.

2. If you need abortion, contact:

Ciocia Basia (abortion in Berlin; they can be found on facebook and theor email is [email protected])/ Ciocia Czesia (abortion in Czech Republic)

Abortion without borders (all of the above cooperate with them)

They will give you information on how to perform safe abortion with right medicaments or will help to travel abroad.

3. If anyone would try to threat you, remember than in Poland it is still legal to do abortion yourself, that’s why it’s mostly done with pills. Don’t let them manipulate you. Fuck these people. You’re not evil for needing abortion.

Please, help me spread this message and translate it in Ukrainian, please

Aborcyjny Dream Team (польська організація)

Ciocia Basia (аборт в Берліні, Німеччина; їх можна знайти на Фейсбуці, електронна пошта: [email protected]) / Ciocia Czesia (аборт в Чехії)

Abortion without borders (організації вище співпрацюють з цією)

Aborcyjny Dream Team (польская организация)

Ciocia Basia (аборт в Берлине, Германия; их можно найти на Фейсбуке, электронная почта: [email protected]) / Ciocia Czesia (аборт в Чехии)

Abortion without borders (организации выше сотрудничают с этой)

it’s darkly funny that every other country in europe with a brutal and inhumane asylum system is completely changing their tune on ukrainian refugees because They’re White This Time but the UK is like lol. lmao. sorry guys you’re still on racism 1? we’re on racism 2. our refugee policy is still operating on HP-lovecraft-the-welsh-aren’t-white rules. oh you’re white and christian? cool story come back when your name is Bellingsworth Imperialism-Terfcroft and your ancestors caused a south asian colonial famine

the funniest part is that all the right-wing columnists who’ve spent the last 22 consecutive years scaremongering about the dangers of e.g. syrian refugees are now all shocked and appalled that the nightmarish system they lovingly campaigned for is working exactly as intended

The UK is so Galaxy Brain on xenophobia and racism that we’ve got an entire Tory cabinet full of Brown politicians—most of them the children of refugees and immigrants—being like “All Hail the Glorious Empire! My hobbies include stock trading, fox hunting, and deporting Latvian cleaning ladies. Keep Britain for the British, and God Bless Margaret Thatcher! #IHeartBrexit” without like… the slightest hint of irony or awareness.

It’s as if there’s some Faustian bargain you can strike where bigotry will never personally hold you back, so long as you agree to be as xenophobic as possible towards anybody else on this Great Isle who has ever once considered seasoning their food.

I want to take a moment to offer a bit of an alternative take on the welcoming of Ukrainian refugees and other forms of solidarity with Ukraine that we’re seeing right now.

I do not want to deny for a second that Europe is deeply, systematically and institutionally racist and that racism very directly impacts who is seen as a victim of a war crime, who is seen as an acceptable refugee, who is given rights. And these are very important things to talk about.

I do think that there is a part of the picture missing when we try to explain everything only in that way: the aspect of fear. Simply put: we would not be seeing all this solidarity in Europe if an imperialist dictator had just invaded New Zealand. But Ukraine is, like, a short bus ride away and Putin has expressed imperial ambitions far beyond just Ukraine. So a lot of people especially in Eastern Europe are seriously wondering ‘are we next?’. Not in a theoretical sense but in a question-that-keeps-people-up-at-night sense. It’s stuff like googling ‘nearest bombshelter’ at 2 am. It’s stuff like hearing a siren and suddenly wondering how long it would take you to pick your kids up from school, pack essentials and start driving to safety.

and while fear that isn’t acknowledged can drive people apart, fear that is acknowledged can be a source of support, solidarity and empathy. And oh boy, seriously considering that you might be the next refugee can create a lot of sudden empathy for refugees. We can see that empathy and only see the hypocrisy in it, or we can see that and also see a potential for that new empathy to grow beyond that and into a more long term and universal solidarity with refugees.

And yes, of course, racism is still a factor. And yes, of course, people should have solidarity with refugees in any circumstance. It shouldn’t take the threat of war. But that is where we are, and we can recognize that opportunity or waste it.

It’s also important to also remember that in Eastern Europe isn’t new to war, even in recent memory.

When I called my 1st generation Polish/Lithuanian/Russian father crying about the war, all he was able to say to me was “We have seen this before, and we will see it again.” Over and over.

When I emailed my 77 yo cousin in Poland to check on our family, he spoke passionately about past conflicts, comparing this war to what he saw during the fall of the Soviet union, and Putin’s actions against Ukraine to what Hitler and Stalin did to Poland. He was more reserved when discussing his fear for the future.

Experiencing suffering doesn’t excuse ignoring the suffering of others - but I haven’t seen much discussion of the history of violence etched into the history of Eastern Europe.

Bringing this back around to the main point, we always need to have compassion for others. However when your own safety always feels tenuous, that can be hard. Eastern Europe may be Europe, but it’s not America, and it’s not Western Europe. Fewer countries are NATO. Russia is a constant threat. They, as clearly seen now, have a belief that ‘historical Russia’ is available to reclaim. Even when Russia is not actively invading, the government is installing puppet leaders, and otherwise influencing other governments. Everywhere you look, there are memorials, art, and architecture to remind you about not so distant violence.

I hope this war brings about a good thing in the form of increased empathy for all refugees. I hope it helps shed light on the racism in Europe. I also hope it can increase awareness of the history and trauma of Eastern Europeans. It is directly impacting how people are reacting now, vs. how they have reacted to conflicts outside of Europe.

Yes. All of this. The Soviet union was 33 years ago. Millennials grew up with parents that were scarred from living under a violent dictatorship, or grew up without parents because of it. This is very recent.

Eastern Europeans are also keenly aware that stigma and quasi-racism against Eastern Europeans by Western Europeans is still very much alive. Even if they are NATO members, they have no real guarantee that when the time comes, Western Europe or the US will actually care enough about them to fight Russia.

Eastern Europeans remember that when Hitler and Stalin invaded Poland in 1939, the west declared war but then didn’t send any troops to Poland and 6 years later when Hitler was defeated, that same west decided that Stalin could keep Poland. The west got what they came for so no need to go on until all occupied people’s are liberated, right?

So they have no guarantee that western powers in NATO won’t go ‘well, is 1.3 million Estonians really worth going to war over?’ and then ‘ Ya know what, Putin can also have 2.8 million Lithuanians as long as we’re safe’ and so on. The realization that Putin definitely wants to occupy them sooner or later and that they might be as alone as Ukraine in a war is there, so of course that is going to impact how they relate to Ukranians.

Being genuinely anti-imperialism, anti-colonialism, etc. means that you're that way across the board, no matter who is doing it. You don't whitewash the Ottoman Empire or Japanese imperialism just because they weren't "white" in an American sense (and in Japan's case, buy into their own propaganda, as they used the specter of Western imperialism to justify what they did to other East Asian/Pacific countries). You don't make excuses for modern Russia trying to take over Ukraine or other sovereign nations in Eastern Europe. If you truly believe in self-determination then it doesn't matter who is trying to prevent that. This shouldn't be hard, right?
