that whole scene where the doctor was begging graham to let grace go because she wasn’t real and where she was telling him that she understands and that he can’t blame himself for her death was so so heartbreaking bc that LITERALLY mirrors the time when river was dead and came back as a data ghost and the doctor blamed themselves for her death and the only way for her to be at peace was for him to let her go.,,,,,

people i absolutely don’t understand: those who don’t absolutely STAN that frog, in all its ridiculous, entirely whack and campy Doctor Who glory

y’all this is a show that’s featured bubble wrap monsters, a sentient glorified skin trampoline, spinning killer christmas trees, space titanic crashing through the tardis walls, massive giant wasps, space fish vampires, death mold, the entirety of the episode dinosaurs on a SPACESHIP, the moon being a fucking egg, actual fucking santa claus showing up out of nowhere, killer infectious eye dust, and death emoji bots, and you’re telling me that a sentient anti-universe manifesting as a frog is too weird for this show? malarky. absolute malarky. i love this lonely sentient frog dimension with all my heart okay bye

WE STAN THE FROG UNIVERSE

The Solitract Universe Frog was Excellent

and here is why:

1) The Solitract doesn’t have to take the form of someone’s lost loved one, she only set up that universe and setting as a trap to keep people there. The Doctor offered herself up willingly, there was no need to maintain a trap.

2) The Doctor does not react well to other beings taking the image of lost loved ones. We just saw this in “Twice Upon a Time”, Twelve did NOT appreciate the avatar taking Bill’s form. The Solitract wanted to be friends with the Doctor and learn about the real universe, the best way to go about it is not to upset her as soon as the two of them are alone together for what at that moment appears to be forever.

3) The Doctor does react well to weird universe stuff. That’s the whole show. “Look, something weird is going on, let’s go check it out” may as well be the first line of every script. The Doctor was there all of two minutes it seemed and she was genuinely sad to leave her new frog-that’s-also-a-universe friend, so we can’t say it didn’t work.

4) If a sentient universe is going to set about being friends with the Doctor, why wouldn’t she take a form that she liked? Present as her real Solitract self, or as close as a conscious universe can present. Which was as a frog. Frog form made her happy. Why not?

5) I mean, the most the Solitract did take was Grace’s voice. Someone who the Doctor liked but didn’t know that long, so it wouldn’t evoke any strong painful emotions. The Solitract even gave a solid reason for that choice that made the Doctor aware it wasn’t a decision to manipulate her, but out of a shared love she and the real Grace had of frogs.

Bottom Line: A frog that is also a conscious universe who is lonely and wants a friend is as Doctor Who as Doctor Who can get.

Right, can we talk about that bit at the end where The Doctor says that she’s made a new friend and then lost them?

I mean, her relationship with that sentient universe frog (SUF) was basically the sped up version of every relationship she’s ever had. An exciting thing happens, The Doctor convinces SUF to explore the universe with her (or in this case, to explore the universe within her), the relationship between them threatens the fabric of said universe, they part ways - SUF maybe dead, maybe alive.

Of course The Doctor is sad. This is what happens Every. Single. Time. It breaks my heart.

Also, the Solitract didn’t have to use an image of a loved one to entice The Doctor into staying. The Doctor was already committed, locked in not because she loved one person inside the Solitract universe but because she loved the entirety of the universe outside of the Solitract universe.

Her love for humanity as a whole allowed her to give up everything she loves - everything she has loved, everything she could have loved in the future - in order to keep it safe. She is the ultimate protector, and I think her love of humanity and of the wonders of our universe is the true OTP of the show.

If that’s not a Big Damn Hero, I don’t know what is.

I keep going from thinking:

‘That would have been an amazing moment for a previous companion or River to appear, what’s Chibnall playing at?’

to reading these beautiful posts and falling in love with the Doctor even more

all this time ryan was unable to call graham ‘grandad’ bc he couldn’t/didn’t want to accept him as family, rejecting all the times he tried to reach out, but now when ryan finally does call him ‘grandad’ it’s because it’s finally his turn to reach out to offer help and comfort, because he’s become more mature and knows how lonely graham must feel after having to say goodbye to grace all over again.

instead of rejecting graham as someone trying to be there for him as his grandad he’s finally realised that he also has a just as important role as a grandson
