guys that was actually legit the original ian chesterton i'm sobbing
Absolutely no one involved enjoyed this reunion
Graham’s companion support group.
I am torn between intense emotion and cackling with laughter that they started a post doctor support group
Graham’s companion support group.
congratulations to the companions for finally unionising
ppl have joked about companion support groups for literally years and the fact chib made it happen is proof he’s a man of the people
Thirteen grabbing all of the lesbian companions before regenerating
no but all doctor/companion romances are inherently doomed and that’s why i like them. the bittersweet pain of finding the right person but not having enough time and the tragic bravery of loving them anyway even tho it’ll end badly is what i’m here for.
nick storing stuff from ex girlfriends like the doctor stores stuff from ex companions in the tardis though
sarah "i always wanted to travel but i didnt have anyone to do it with" though
the way that rose became the doctor vs the way jack became the doctor vs the way martha became the doctor vs the way donna became the doctor vs the way river became the doctor vs the way clara became the doctor vs the way bill became the doctor vs the way missy tried to become the doctor vs the way yaz is becoming the doctor vs the way-
Support group for everyone that falls in love with the Doctor organised by Jack who's accidentally done it 5 times now and shows no sign of learning from past experience
Martha starts up the Companion Support Fund for anyone who's had to put up with the Doctor being a bastard with financial compensation taken from the Doctor's abandoned UNIT salary because they don't know what to do with it
Rose starts a 'So you accidentally became human+' group that intersects with Jack's 'Came back from the dead' group
Donna and Craig have a 'accidentally got stuck with the Doctor's memories' chat
Sylvia and Francine bitch about the Doctor in their 'family members who had the displeasure of meeting the Doctor' group chat
YEEESSS!!
It just occurred to me how weird it is that none of the companions were allowed to stay with the Doctor for the rest of their lives?
We see Martha make the decision to leave the Doctor and Amy and Rory talk about being aware that one day they’ll have to choose to leave too, and of course Ryan and Graham come to the same conclusion (and get to pick when to leave, like Martha), but none of the other companions from New Who wanted to leave the Doctor. I don’t recall Bill or Clara talking about seeing an end to their travels, and Rose and Donna talk explicitly about how they want to spend the rest of their lives travelling with Ten.
Now, I understand why they can’t keep an actor in the show forever, but they could easily give a character a happy ending where they spend the rest of their lives travelling with the Doctor until they die in their old age, whether by the danger inherent in their travels or by failing health in their advanced age, all they’d have to do is put the chosen companion in FX make-up to show they’re older (like they did with Clara in Last Christmas) or even mention that this is what happened. I’d love the closure of seeing a much older companion say goodbye when they know they don’t have much time left (maybe even seeing their last trip together?) but this wouldn’t be strictly necessary, they could just tell us it happened off-screen.
(How cool would it be to have an 90-year-old companion who’s travelled with the Doctor since their 20s sacrificing themselves to, say, save a whole galaxy and having a monologue where they thank the Doctor for the adventure of a lifetime? Reminiscing about their time together and about how much they mean to each other? How much they learned travelling time and space together? How they helped each other be better, do better?)
The Doctor is so old and lives for such long periods of time that it’s weird that most of his companions only stay with him for 1-3 years before the narrative tears them apart. This could be meant as commentary on how life with the Doctor isn’t survivable for long to humans, but that seems off-brand for DW.
I think it’s more likely that they keep having to write the characters off the show and they’re trying to come up with these great endings for their arcs and missed the obvious: they can give them their happy ending and then promptly move on to the next season/companion(s). The Doctor doesn’t age like a normal human, jumping forward 60-ish years in their personal history wouldn’t even necessitate them looking any different so why not take advantage of that and finally allow both them and a companion the chance to stay together as long as human biology allows? They don’t even have to show it, they could just tell us that’s what happened.
Anyway, this post isn’t specifically about how Donna Noble deserved better but it also is actually exactly about how Donna Noble deserved better.
not to keep posting about the ep but the way that 13 reacts to being controlled and left in the dark is by trying to control her companions and keep them in the dark. soo unhealthy queen i love it keep getting darker
*haven't watched the new episode yet* but-
I've just realised that the only thing the doctor really told her companions back when they were asking who she really was, were those buzzwords, her titles, which planet she was from, etc. Only, after everything that's happened, none of that feels true anymore. The only things she managed to open up about ended up being a lie, to them and to herself. And she hasn't opened up since.
Just a thought...
Yes and no, cus she definitely opens up about some personal stuff in her early life to people re: sisters, grandmothers and fairytales.
But you actually go back to that first series of hers.
I’ll give you a tenner if you can find the episode where she tells them she’s a Time Lord.
I’ll give you another one if you find her saying she’s from Gallifrey.
Those buzzwords? They don’t exist even from the start. Thirteen was born cagey on that score. Given what happened with Twelve and the Time Lords, (and with Clara’s story baring so many similarities with becoming immortal and attempted memory wiping) combined with the shrouds in The Ghost Monument, I think more had already been triggered in her head about this than we thought. Perhaps why she was thinking about those details of her early life so much in the first place.
Oohhhhhh holy shit
no but am i the only one who doesnt think yazs doctorification is a bad thing? i mean yeah sure probably not the healthiest but like, no companion is the healthiest (except bill?) thats just kinda the nature of the travelling youre a little messed up
but like. it does not feel like clara to me. it does not feel like impending doom to me. shes gonna reach her own hights i think. like yeah sure theres gonna be a flipside but i think it’ll be an interesting flipside like a ‘oh this is what it’s like this is the DEcision I HAve TO Make ABout THe Fate oF the UNiverse’ but i dont think yaz will get punished for this i think thats my point
it doesnt feel to me like the narrative will punish yaz for this like kinda what happened to clara? it isnt too big for her boots it isnt being misguided about what the doctor is it’s just,,,, shes learning to become what she wanted to become when she became police. it’s… interesting? shes not gonna die? like? no i dont think so. it’s interesting and i want to see where yaz goes. i think she’ll have a good ending like theyre not gonna kill her off for copying the doctor i tHINK
Punishing companions isn’t Chibnall’s style. Putting them through a wringer - yes, but having long term damage, not so much. Ryan and Graham are the first companions in New Who to leave without scars all over them. Yaz will be fine. She may not enjoy everything that will get thrown her way, but she won’t be killed off.
I love Rose Tyler because every time she encountered a new alien life form or a fellow human that seemed to be mistreated in some way she went “HELLO DO THEY TREAT YOU WELL, HOW MUCH DO THEY PAY YOU, ARE YOUR BASIC RIGHTS BEING VIOLATED, DID YOU KNOW YOU ARE ENTITLED TO AN EIGHT HOUR SHIFT AND THREE WEEKS OF VACATION ALSO YOU COULD JOIN A UNION, MY NAME IS ROSE I’M HERE TO HELP” and that was just so rad of her
It’s because she worked in retail
okay but let’s not forget Martha who got kidnapped by some weird fish guy and her first response was “oh no your arm is dislocated here let me help you”
Aw hell yeah
