@burningcomputerpersona

Currently obsessed with american pop punk band The Wonder Years. This blog is mostly just a collection of things that I'm interested in at the moment, whether it's music or a new fandom or just queer memes in general. I'll probably appear once in a while to reblog a bunch of posts about a new obsession that you didn't follow me for and then vanish off into the unknown again. Current interests include: the wonder years, spanish love songs, hot mulligan, against me, doctor who, etc.

Some highlights:

  • Astrologers helped design the study
  • No one did better than random chance, even though they only included people in the study who are experienced with astrology and stated that they expect themselves to do better than random chance
  • They gave every astrologer a set of 50 things about a person and 5 birth charts to choose from. They weren’t even coming up with the chart themselves!
  • After taking the test, most thought they nailed it. Zero out of 152 did better than 5 out of 12. None nailed it
  • Astrologers who rated themselves highly experienced (“world class experts”) did the same or worse as those who said they have limited experience. Both performed the same as random chance
  • This is hilarious

i go on instagram. i see that them magazine has posted an article about how to have sex with transmascs (written by a transmasc). i go to the comments. people complain about, amongst other things, how the first paragraph is transmisognistic and that there's no similar article for transfems. i go to the article. the first paragraph has a line about how transmascs are erased, with a link to an article about erasure. i leave instagram and put my head directly through the nearest wall

is the transmisogny in the room with us now. folks is is transmisogny to point out transmasc erasure. should the article have started with a 10-page essay about how trans women have it sooooo so so much worse and frankly it's kinda sus to talk about sex with transmascs but not transfems ://

In honour of some WPATH folks accusing me of being a radical anti-gatekeeping activist, I thought I’d re-share my latest radical anti-gatekeeping article out of spite:

It’s also worth reminding people that there’s no evidence that ‘assessing’ gender identity/dysphoria actually prevents regret or otherwise improve outcomes.

[image description: an excerpt of text that says:

“It’s funny,” I told Flewin. “We have an old Nintendo Game Boy floating around the house, and Tetris is the only game we own. My wife will sometimes dig it out to play on airplanes and long car rides. She’s weirdly good at it. She can get 500 or 600 lines, no problem.”

What Flewin said next I will never forget.

“Oh, my!”

Ok this wikipedia article is pissing me off so much

yeah i’m gonna re-write this fucker

goddamn. there is so much bias in the first paragraph alone:

this is an EXCELLENT example of the way word choice and tone can be used to create bias and transform the truth to suit the writer’s purposes.

Here’s my re-write:

i got rid of the passive tone (which distances Profumo from his actions), and changed the photo. notice how the original writer chose a photo taken before the scandal, portraying Profumo in a respected position of power, a powerful man seated at a desk. I chose a photo taken in the aftermath. Which would you say more accurately reflects the context?

some other changes:

image

“denied impropriety” like he’s some maiden aunt clutching at pearls. No, what he actually did was:

oh, and he wasn’t

image

he was, in fact

after lying through his teeth. now here’s my favorite bit:

what does that MEAN? what the hell does that MEAN??? oh boo hoo hooey the Prime Minister’s self-confidence was damaged, how dreadful for the poor dear. the poor sweet man…

fuck that. in fact, Profumo’s actions

of the government, and rightly so.

oh, and the young woman in question was a model, not a “would-be” model. But ultimately her profession has no relevance here–what is relevant is that a middle-aged man in a position of power slept with a 19-year-old. I wonder what motive the original author could have had, to choose to emphasize her career over the fact she was still a teenager…

Words can be used to bend anything. Pay attention to tone. Pay attention to authorial intent. Pay attention to what is included and what isn’t. Question everything. But especially question the language used to describe historical and current events. Every writer has an agenda–look for it. Above all:

Read critically.

#this is not a commissioned post (it’s a ‘fuck you you bastard’ post) but i wish it was #Someone gimme 4 bucks I spent a spite-fueled 80 minutes writing to this

#spite is a renewable resource

That is amazing

I wrote this. I hope you like it. It’s my version of vomiting rainbows onto a page.  (Also A+++ to the artist following my suggestion of “some famous fictional characters sitting around together with laptops.”)

… and now, A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to AO3 for winning! As I wrote in this piece after their nomination, this is a huge triumph for not only fandom, but for diversity in scifi and for diversity in technology development. <3

YESSS CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I wish i could find this one article written in I believe the 90’s that went under the radar on abortion. The author said that the “life” arguments are basically useless on either side and what actually matters is that humans shouldn’t have a right to use other human bodies as a resource without consent no matter how alive or sentient they are, even if they’re on the brink of death you have the right to deny them access to you. It probably was too radical for pro-choice activists back in those days but like…that’s the most robust arguement lol so we need 2 being that back and dead the pontifications and splitting hairs about “life” in my honest onion

I found it. Actually, it was written in the 70’s. She was way ahead of the curve.

The article is ‘A Defense of Abortion’ by Judith Jarvis Thomson. Essential reading!

If you cannot demand that a person donate their organs to keep you alive, you have no right to legislate that an embryo gets to use a woman’s body to keep itself alive without the woman’s consent.

just read about this absolutely adorable lesbian proposal story on buzzfeed. and basically one girl told her mom “oh i want to propose to my gf when we’re visiting yall next month! during pictionary!” and the mom was like “yeah cool great we can work with that!”

and then the gf told the mom “hey i want to propose to your daughter when we visit yall next month!” and the mom was like “oh f*** what am i supposed to do now” and ended up carefully strategizing so her daughter and her daughter’s gf would propose at the same time and neither of them knew it and the video is so goddamn cute

my favorite part of the article (besides the video) is this quote from the mom: "When in the universe will there ever be two lesbians that want to propose at the same time, the same day, the same place, and the same way? I have to get it right.” i mean she was basically like “it is my responsibility to the LGBTQ community to make this the cutest shit ever” and she followed through like a champion

truly a Good Ally™
