@burningcomputerpersona

Currently obsessed with american pop punk band The Wonder Years. This blog is mostly just a collection of things that I'm interested in at the moment, whether it's music or a new fandom or just queer memes in general. I'll probably appear once in a while to reblog a bunch of posts about a new obsession that you didn't follow me for and then vanish off into the unknown again. Current interests include: the wonder years, spanish love songs, hot mulligan, against me, doctor who, etc.

Please don't use the Patreon app on any iPhone. Apple is charging Patreon users an additional 30% fee.

Patreon is the main source of income for many creators and not everyone can afford an extra 30% on top of what they're already paying.

This is 100% corporate greed and it hurts all of us. If you can avoid using the iPhone Patreon please do so.

Hank Green made a video about this kind of thing! But yes, the TL;DW is subscribe to stuff using a browser if at all possible! Otherwise either you or the creator/company you're subscribing to is getting screwed over.

hey what the fuck

That’s Louis Rossman, a repair technician and YouTuber, who went viral recently for railing against Apple. Apple purposely charges a lot for repairs and you either have to pay up or buy a new device. That’s because Apple withholds necessary tools and information from outside repair shops. And to think, we were just so close to change.

Reblog if you:

  • Have an iPhone and are in need of repairs
  • Have a friend with that problem
  • Hate Apple and are more than happy to spite them in some way

No one will know which is it

This guy inspired me to repair my own macbook. First of all, you should know that I am not… like, I have to look up HOW to look up what my computer specifications are. Tech, that ware either soft or hard, is not a subject in which I experience comfort or competence. But my puppy peed on my keyboard, and I asked the apple store, or the fucking mac cafe, or the godsdamn Computer House Chill Zone or whatever cute ass name they have for their bullshit store, and they said it would be TWELVE HUNDRED DOLLARS TO REPLACE MY KEYBOARD. I’m not even exaggerating.

So I asked the internet, well how hard IS it to repair? And I saw this guy’s video, and while I am no techie, I AM fueled by spite, so I was all “oh, they do that shit on purpose specifically so they can charge me $1200 bucks or make me buy a new computer hunh? FUCK THEM” and I bought all the tools I needed for about $25 and I bought all the parts I needed for about another $25 and I watched a few tutorial videos, and I replaced my own keyboard.

So, once you are doing the actual deed, it becomes pretty obvious that they are finding creative ways to make this much harder than it has to be on purpose. On thing that stood out to me is, instead of all the tiny screws being the same size, there are about two dozen very slightly different sizes. They could easily be all the same size, or like, two sizes at most, but no.

These mother fuckers will take a panel that screws into place and they’ll use a different size screw for each corner. They are so close that you almost cannot tell them apart visually, but they each will only screw into the matching corner. Like, it’s a pretty clear “fuck you” to anyone trying to do repairs.

anyway, this guy is also fueled by spite, and doing holy work, and I have mad respect

This is awesome. Man is doing good ass deeds 24/7 because he’s giving people control.

How dare you not leave a link to his channel, this guy is the savior of the modern world.

sorry I make this post frequently but apple really doesn't get enough hate

so if you don't like them it's fine. I know a lot of people who are really mean to picky eaters about their preferences, and it doesn't actually help.

However, some people only think they hate apples because they've only tried the horrible mealy Red "Delicious" variety. If that's the case, you might be surprised by how much you enjoy a tastier variety. Honeycrisp and Cosmic crisp are some of the most popular apples and they are really good.

https://applerankings.com/ is a great, and wittily written, trove of apple reviews and information and will help you find nice apples. It is focused on apples available in the US, and idk where you are. I really miss discovery apples, which don't seem to be a thing this side of the Atlantic.

They can be a little pricey though. Obviously I don't know your personal situation, but if that's an issue, there might be local programs that can help. I don't know where you live, but here in Seattle there's a program called Fresh Bucks that gives people $40/month to spend on fruit and vegetables at local farmers markets. There might be something like that near you. Or, if you just really wanna try a really nice apple and it's not accessible to you, dm me and I can PayPal you something. I just want everyone to have the chance to have a nice apple from time to time.

Anyway, like I said, if you just truly don't like any apples, you are 100% valid and you shouldn't force yourself to eat something you don't like. Body autonomy includes not having to eat foods you hate. But I'd hate for you to go through life not knowing how much you could enjoy a high-quality apple, just because you've only experienced the worst apples.

oh snap I just realized op meant the phone company

no no keep talking

I will also add that compared to a nice Pink Lady apple, trying to bite into an iPhone is a deeply disappointing experience.

Gentle reminder that your work-arounds for these tag issues should not include replacing letters with numbers or other symbols that will made the words illegible to screen reader users.

I’ve seen this mentioned a couple times in the tags, so let me assure you all that adding apostrophes should be completely fine. #’girl’ should not interfere with screen readers.

A few additional notes based on things I’m seeing in reblogs and tags:

  • Yes, adding a period work too. #girl. is very accessible.
  • Using numbers instead of letters does in fact make things difficult for dyslexic people too, this is an added disadvantage.
  • Using numbers instead of letters does in fact make you sound like a Homestuck too, this is an added disadvantage.
  • Using asterisks instead of letters to censor words is a bad idea, it can greatly impede screen reader users.
  • This only applies to tags, you do not need to (and absolutely should not) start censoring your post’s content.

A Growing List of Banned Tags

This is my second go at making this blog. The first time I got shadowbanned immediately for writing a post with these words on it, so I’m going to have to link to a google doc instead.

You can find my current list HERE

If you’d like to contribute tags you’ve found, please send it via an ask or submission so I can double check and add it to the list.

The thing that's bugging the hell out of me about this entire tag ban and iOS issue is this - we literally don't need the app store to have an app. Like at all.

There are apps available from websites that don't work with the app store/ aren't allowed there (take p0rnhub as an example) that you can just download from the website.

If iOS is going to be a moldy walnut about content on Tumblr, fine. Then Tumblr should just be offering its own full version of the app for download from a browser so that there are no restrictions being enforced by Apple (or any other major tech company because Android isn't totally innocent either afaik).

Just. Make an independent version of the app. That's it. It'd be so easy. Fucking do it.

In re: Apple Frakking Tumblr Over

OKAY So ever since the Tumblr announcement over Apple's TOS for the app staying on the AppStore, I've been seeing so many posts spreading so much information AND misinformation.

If you haven't seen the post, click here, but basically it boils down to Apple's TOS for what Apps can and can't exist on the AppStore are pretty damn draconian. Famously Discord had to disallow ios app users from entering Not Safe For Work/Mature servers. Discord also put in a work-around to this but I'll get to that. Anyway, those TOS Apple's put in place are now affecting tumblr.

Misinfo #1: Tumblr is deliberately making the app experience unusable - False

Tumblr is doing what Apple is telling them to do. Apple is the one making the iOS version of the app unusable. Not tumblr. Although their enforcement of Apple's wants is rather obnoxious this isn't tumblr's fault. It's Apple's. Direct your ire to Apple, not tumblr, because this is directly their doing.

Misinfo #2: Tags have been ganked. - Well yes, but actually no.

It's true tags are borped on the iOs app BUT!!! "Banned tags" work just fine in the web version of tumblr, or the Android app. All the tags I've seen in the "banned tags" lists going around work just fine on my phone (I have android) or on my laptop. THE TAGS ALSO WORK FINE ON THE BROWSER ON MY IPAD. That's right, easy way to get around iOS shennangannery? Use the Tumblr website. It looks (and runs) just like the app. There are even other features on the website that aren't on the app. So if you're an iOS user frustrated by how the tumblr app now works, log in on Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Opera, literally any internet web browser, and boom bam. Your original tumblr experience is back. Original bugs and all. Screenshot below of my android phone, and the tumblr website being able to access "banned tags." Also a screenshot of the post from the wip tumblr saying that experiences on Android and the website will not be affected.

Misinfo #3: Tumblr's doing nothing to combat the ultra-censorship on their iOS app - Maybe

In their post, staff said they're working on a work-around. They left details pretty vague, as is staff's wont, but they aren't exactly out of options. This is where I get back to what Discord did when Apple did the same thing to them. Essentially you would have to go onto Discord on your laptop and allow access to not safe for work servers on iOS. It's a setting only found in the laptop/desktop version of discord. (see screenshot for proof) I believe Tumblr is probably working on something similar. To allow users to have the original experience by going through the website. For now you still have the browsers on your phone. Also screenshotted, where staff said in their post they're working on a workaround.

All this to say, you guys need to stop freaking out. Yes, tumblr is broken, tumblr's been broken for a hot minute, but you know what? This latest censorship dirge is not tumblr's fault. It's apples. And there are workarounds, pretty piss easy workarounds like using your browser instead of your app. It's not even that much more difficult. I know this is frustrating, but being reactionary and spreading misinformation isn't going to do anything but harm people who are looking for solutions.

You are using an unsupported browser and things might not work as intended. Please make sure you're using the latest version of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge.
