Unico evolution
The first Unico was drawn in June 1976. Shortly after Osamu Tezuka visited the Sanrio studio in Los Angeles, (California, USA) he got the idea to make a manga for Sanrio’s upcoming magazine Lyrica.
The second Unico was drawn in November 1976. This was from issue one of Lyrica and was the world’s first glimpse at Unico. He went through a major design change between June and November of that year. The most notable changes were making his coat completely light blue, and giving him a longer mane.
The third Unico was drawn sometime in 2005. While this series of clip art is 17 years old, these illustrations are still being used on modern Osamu Tezuka products. Design changes from the manga to modern day are very small. The modern depictions of Unico make him have smaller eyes and a different shaped tail.
