i think it rules actually that rather than just being bad at science, oras maxie is a very utilitarian "fuck the environment, we need to harness any power available to allow humanity to progress, we have to carve our own world, technology and the accommodation for people above all" person, and oras archie is an anprim who thinks humanitys senseless expansion needs to be halted and capitalism destroyed and we need to learn how to cooperate as human beings rather than as units in a system. and that they are still goofy as hell and really fun and distinct. see oras was a masterpiece. they dont make em like that anymore

and the parallels between maxie and steven - maxie used to work for devon, and stevens heart is in the right place but hes still rich and kind of out of touch, he interacts with the ancient history of hoenn as an outsider, he doesnt understand where zinnia is coming from, hes very reliant on what he already knows and slow to embrace other peoples ideas. wallace in contrast is very much in touch with his heritage as an indigenous sootopolitan and understands whats going on in the context of cycles that repeat endlessly throughout the ages, just like zinnia does. im just saying, oras is a masterpiece. its a masterpiece and spheal is very cute and round

the "too much water" thing is important too! hoenn is an archipelago and the mainland isnt very big. there is very limited space on land, and the ocean is literally such an intrinsic part of the culture and industry and mythology and architecture and Everything. why do you think the main deities of hoenn are those of land and sea (and air, as the thing that unifies them). its because the land is firmly a symbol of humanity and the sea is a symbol of nature. its why maxie wants the land expanded, like its a very obvious concern for modern hoenn. and why archie uses the sea as the symbol of his ideals. and the draconid and rayquaza represent the notion that those can and should live in harmony. i understand this. i feel this. ive seen the truth beneath the glow of the ebb and flow where the roots of all mysteries grow i am below so far below the bottom line
