no offence but the reason tumblr is “dying” is, well, yes, of course the cursed like/reblog ratio and the change in user behaviour (because of people being used to how instagram and tiktok work) BUT also the lack of weekly shows. i say it with my whole chest, they don't produce captivating and engaging stupid weekly tv shows anymore because streaming killed that so you have spikes of activity here when Something happens in general fandom or up to three days after a new season of whatever drops and then it's a wasteland. this is obviously an old woman yelling at a cloud missing supernatural and the vampire diaries and pretty little liars and all these other shows type of post but honestly give me back weekly tv shows where i have something to watch for 40 minutes almost every day of the week after work so then i can read and reblog it on tumblr give it back for the sake of my sanity

THIS

A spurt of interest doesn't carry a fandom. Releasing shows weekly gives everyone a chance to speculate, to theorize, to discuss the show and the possibility of what's to come. It's a long burning simmer instead of a flare of gasoline on a bonfire.

Binging reduces the show to simply "content" and not an "experience" to be shared with the rest of the fandom.

We don't want "content". We want an experience. And this is what binging is taking away from us.

fandom tumblr was another casualty of streaming services. we used to be on here posting about the episodes that were coming out weekly and posting gifs and writing insane shit about the tv shows we liked. now a new season of a show will drop and we’ll talk about it for a week. two weeks tops. and then that show will leave collectively conscious for 1+ year till the next season drops. there’s a reason succession sundays was a blast on here

we used to have real television

Once upon a time there was Netflix, and it cost $8 per month to watch pretty much any movie ever made instantly. It made sense. Everybody had Netflix and life was good.

Then there was Hulu, and it seemed weird at first to have two streaming services. But basic Hulu was free and mostly streamed TV shows so it kind of made sense. Soon they charged a small fee for the convenience of streaming TV shows without ads, which also made sense.

Life was very good. People forgot that piracy even existed.

Then a few years later they added about 200 other streaming services, each one costing more than the last, and each stripping away "exclusive" content from the other services, and now there are UNSKIPPABLE COMMERCIALS and the fucking planet is on fire

disney when they spend exactly $2 promoting their new movie and release it during a busy weekend and then it flops

@artist-heart83 There is actually a reason for this. A very disgusting and greedy capitalist reason but a reason nonetheless.

Basically, they are banking on it not doing well in theaters, but doing well on streaming services in October, over three months after the release date.

Most of the writers/actors/workers/etc paycheck depends on how well they do in theaters and the three months after the release.

Since it’ll fall in theaters and won’t pick up in streaming until after everyone has gotten (the majority of) their paycheck, they won’t have to pay their workers as much as their work is worth.

cool cool cool im making a molotov cocktail

Netflix Canada is done with being basic.
The streaming giant says it's phasing out the $9.99 "basic" option from its price plans, taking away the cheapest subscription without ads.
That means new Netflix subscribers will have to decide whether they're ready to sit through commercial breaks or fork out a bit more money for an ad-free experience.
Netflix's ad tier costs $5.99 and allows viewing on up to two screens at once with commercial interruptions.
The next level up is $16.49 per month to watch without ads, with simultaneous viewing on two devices. There's also the premium plan for $20.99 with 4K high-definition video and the option to add up to two members who don't live in their household.

Note from poster @el-shab-hussein: Remember what happened last time? When they cracked down on password sharing on Canada first because they use Canadians as a testing grounds for what they want to implement on bigger populations? This is going to happen to the Netflix services in other countries if they think this measure is successful. We're just consumer guinea pigs in this story.

Nothing on Netflix is worth paying $16.49 a month for.

wasn't the point of streaming that you didn't have to put up with ads been every? and also that it was you know cheap and convenient? have they forgotten that we can just leave?

Piracy 🤝 Physical Media 🤝 Libraries

Physical media has two hands 😌

As Charles Stross said, we used to have a word for people who collected media and organized it and made it available to everyone for free. We called them "Librarians".

Pirates and Librarians and Archivists aren't different types of people, they're different sides of the same coin. Pirate if you have to, Archive if it's at risk, Library...ize? If you can.

okay the lack of a verb for "Library" slightly ruins the metaphor. But the point is: Librarians make sure everyone can access it. Archivists make sure it will always exist. Pirates make sure it can be gotten for free, without limitations. We need all these roles at different times, and they all work together.

Remember, if you've seen Nosferatu, the super influential silent horror film, it's because of piracy. All the "legal" copies were destroyed. Archivists made sure the pirated copies lasted. And Librarians made sure you could easily watch a copy.

What the fuck… netflix only pay in full once a show reaches season 3? And by rebooting daredevil and restarting it as season 1, Disney+ can get away with not paying the crew in full

yeah netflix doesn’t pay residuals to actors/writers/etc. until after season 3, meaning none of them get paid for streams of their episodes the way they would if the show aired on live broadcast. now you know why Netflix almost always cancels its own original programming after 3 seasons

This is so true I didn’t think about important reruns.

Streaming Service Rant

You could make this shorter by just going  “I’m a thief and refuse to pay for content”. Would save you a lot of time.

I’m a thief and refuse to pay for content and i encourage everyone else to do the same! Don’t be a little bitch like chemychems and jump aboard the ship, matey!
