Planet's Fucked: What Can You Do To Help? (Long Post)

Since nobody is talking about the existential threat to the climate and the environment a second Trump term/Republican government control will cause, which to me supersedes literally every other issue, I wanted to just say my two cents, and some things you can do to help. I am a conservation biologist, whose field was hit substantially by the first Trump presidency. I study wild bees, birds, and plants.

In case anyone forgot what he did last time, he gagged scientists' ability to talk about climate change, he tried zeroing budgets for agencies like the NOAA, he attempted to gut protections in the Endangered Species Act (mainly by redefining 'take' in a way that would allow corporations to destroy habitat of imperiled species with no ramifications), he tried to do the same for the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (the law that offers official protection for native non-game birds), he sought to expand oil and coal extraction from federal protected lands, he shrunk the size of multiple national preserves, HE PULLED US OUT OF THE PARIS CLIMATE AGREEMENT, and more.

We are at a crucial tipping point in being able to slow the pace of climate change, where we decide what emissions scenario we will operate at, with existential consequences for both the environment and people. We are also in the middle of the Sixth Mass Extinction, with the rate of species extinctions far surpassing background rates due completely to human actions. What we do now will determine the fate of the environment for hundreds or thousands of years - from our ability to grow key food crops (goodbye corn belt! I hated you anyway but), to the pressure on coastal communities that will face the brunt of sea level rise and intensifying extreme weather events, to desertification, ocean acidification, wildfires, melting permafrost (yay, outbreaks of deadly frozen viruses!), and a breaking down of ecosystems and ecosystem services due to continued habitat loss and species declines, especially insect declines. The fact that the environment is clearly a low priority issue despite the very real existential threat to so many people, is beyond my ability to understand. I do partly blame the public education system for offering no mandatory environmental science curriculum or any at all in most places. What it means is that it will take the support of everyone who does care to make any amount of difference in this steeply uphill battle.

There are not enough environmental scientists to solve these issues, not if public support is not on our side and the majority of the general public is either uninformed or actively hostile towards climate science (or any conservation science).

So what can you, my fellow Americans, do to help mitigate and minimize the inevitable damage that lay ahead?

FINALLY SOMEONE TALKS ABOUT THIS

A 2nd trump presidency will basically be one of the last nails in our coffins, as the US, one of the biggest polluters, is going to be no longer have no qualms over fucking over the entire planet.

I get people's immediate priority isn't this, so they aren't talking about it, it's their rights and livelyhoods, it is totally understandable.

But talking to one of my professors today really showed me that the scientific community really is panicking and the planet is on its knees.

HOWEVER,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, we cannot lose hope, bc climate doomrism is as bad as climate denial

Take this time, while these issues are fresh on our minds, to educate yourself. Get involved. Share news with others. Call out misinformation. Do everything you can, while we still can.

i've put together a recommended reading list titled WHAT DO WE DO AFTER THE REVOLUTION FAILS: A PRIMER

the list gets its title from an essay by george jackson published in the black panther newspaper on august 28, 1971— in it, jackson discusses the failures of revolutionary movements, failures of reform, and the questions and issues necessary to tackle in "raising a positive mobilization of revolutionary consciousness in a mass that has gone through a contra-positive, authoritarian process"

in other words, what do we do after the revolution fails?

part of the work of raising revolutionary consciousness is education; i'm aiming to do my part by providing some resources that i have found particularly motivating and consciousness-raising irt my own political growth

this recommended reading list is a living document. the titles included will be updated with pdf links as they are found and archived. these sources are recommended not as gospels, nor should they be viewed without meaningful criticism, but are beneficial starting points for critique and revolutionary thought to begin

if you have questions about any of these titles, want assistance in finding copies, or want to talk about any of these topics, message me! i find it hugely important to do my part to help folks educate themselves and raise their revolutionary consciousness; no one does this work alone, and if you are feeling stuck/isolated/overwhelmed by what to do next, let's walk together

Do you know anything i can donate to for palestine that's not the gofundmes because the idea of having to choose who needs my money more is just. scary to me they all need it 3: maybe there's a thing that splits/distributes money evenly???? idk but help would be appreciated

Avatar

Gazafunds actually deals with this anxiety and makes a decision for you if you want. Their home page has a spotlighted fundraiser and the code consider things like how close the gfm is to finishing, when the most recent donation is, etc. So it's randomized to help as many people as possible.

There's also @helpgazachildren which if you donate, you can help multiple people at once since it's a whole mutual aid fund, or at least close to it. Hussam distributes money to people who need it when he's asked.

use cobalt for your downloading needs.

I know there's other sites and then the other issue of youtube starting to block people from downloading from forcing people to log in to watch videos, but for what you can, cobalt lets you pick your settings for video, audio, and other stuff.

You can also use this on Twitter, tumblr, tiktok, and other sites too if needed.

Stop exposing yourself to sites with high-risk to download a virus, use cobalt when you can.

Resources for Mending Clothes

We toss out over 80 pounds of textiles each year. These textiles are often made of plastic materials (polyester, nylon), made in unethical conditions, dyed with harsh dyes that often get put into the rivers, etc. Even a single cotton shirt releases carbon emissions and uses tons of water.

So the best thing to prevent the unsustainable growth of the fashion industry is to make sure that your clothing lasts as long as possible. To do so, mending clothing is a must. So here are some resources to help you learn how to do various things, such as sewing a button, to tailoring clothes, or even upcycling old clothing into new styles.

These are just a few of the things that you can do in order to make sure that your clothing lasts for a long time. Nobody wants to keep buying new clothing, as it is expensive and wasteful.

So making alterations to your clothing, or fixing small holes hen you see them can be hugely beneficial to your wallet, to garment workers, and to the environment in the long term.

Mending! It’s really satisfying, saves money, and saves the planet!

I got a laptop with Windows 11 for an IT course so I can get certified, and doing the first time device set-up for it made me want to commit unspeakable violence

Windows 11 should not exist, no one should use it for any reason, it puts ads in the file explorer and has made it so file searches are also web searches and this cannot be turned off except through registry editing. Whoever is responsible for those decisions should be killed, full stop.

Switch to linux, it's free and it's good.

u r absolutely right I have SO many complaints about Windows omg.

For anyone who'd like to follow along, I'm gonna share how to get around those things with group policies bc they're more user friendly and descriptive than registry editor imo :3 I'll also show how to get around needing a Microsoft account to get setup.

For the Device Setup

"OOBE" stands for Out Of Box Experience which is what that setup workflow is. But it also happens to be a folder with a little program in it that'll let you skip connecting to the internet; this makes it so you don't have to sign up with a Microsoft account and can just use a normal local one instead. And it already comes preinstalled! Here's how you get to it:

  1. Hold Shift + F10, or Shift + Fn + F10 depending on your keyboard.
  2. Click inside the window that pops up, type the following and press enter afterwards to run it: OOBE\BypassNRO
  3. I believe it should restart your computer automatically, but if not then restart your computer or type: shutdown /r /t 0 /f

Now when you're brought back to the setup workflow, the page where you connect to the internet will have a new button on it that lets you say you don't have internet. Clicking that and proceeding through the rest of the setup lets you get around the Microsoft account thing.

Group Policies

You don't have to know much about them, these are just a bunch of specific settings for what your computer can or can't do that lets you decide how it works in different ways.

I'm gonna show you how to turn off the recommendations and internet stuff basically. For now bring up search and type gpedit, pick this

It'll open up to Local Group Policy Editor and we can get started :3c

Start Recommendations

In the side menu, go to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar. Click on Settings to sort them with all the "Turn off" ones bumped to the top.

Here's what you should set:

  • Turn off user tracking: enabled
  • Turn off feature advertisement balloon notifications: enabled
  • Remove Recommended section from Start Menu: enabled
  • Remove Personalized Website Recommendations from the Recommended section in the Start Menu: enabled
  • Do not search Internet: enabled

Windows Spotlight

Back in the side menu, go down to Windows Components > Cloud Content

  • Turn off all Windows spotlight features: enabled
  • Do not use diagnostic data for tailored experiences: enabled

Cortana

In the side menu, this one's back at the top under Computer Configuration. You're gonna want to go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Search

  • Allow Cortana: disabled
  • Don't search the web or display web results in Search: enabled

News and Interests

In the side menu go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > News and interests.

  • Enable news and interests on the taskbar: disabled

Microsoft Account Login Nudges

When you don't use a Microsoft account they'll nudge you repeatedly to sign in so you can "get the most out of your experience" *gag*. The group policy for turning that off has a note that suggests it might not work with Windows 11 though (implicitly), so you can close the group policy editor window now and for this last one let's just open up the regular settings.

Go to System > Notifications > Additional settings, then uncheck all the boxes. And there ya go! (✿◠‿◠)ノ u are done.

Group policies are kind of a rabbit hole so while there is a lot more you could change or read into, for your own sanity's sake I would advise against it and say call it a day lol

This is all extremely good information, thank you very much for the addition!

I endorse this as an IT technician. I do this to every new Win11 device I set up.

As a bonus, run Chris Titus Tech's debloat tool on it.

It allows you to add tools, remove/disable shitty parts of windows, and easily change some settings. My default is running the preset for a desktop/laptop and applying security update settings, but there are so many options to customize. I used it on my personal laptop.

I'm begging other trans people to read an ounce of Black Feminist or Decolonialist Feminist writing. I'm on my hands and knees and begging you. I promise you, I promise you, there is so much more to Feminist theory than anything you have picked up from White/Radical/Pop/Liberal Feminism I promise you. Read There Is No Hierarchy Of Oppressions By Audre Lorde. I have a link to the PDF right here you can read it for free. Take my hand I can't do this alone (thanks glass beach). Peace And Love On Planet Earth.

I've recommended them a thousand times but Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall, White Tears, Brown Scars by Ruby Hamad, and Mediocre by Ijeoma Oluo are excellent reads for those wanting to understand some of the voices of the brown women behind intersectional feminism (and in Mediocre's case, in politics and society as a whole in comparison to white men), and how we aren't being heard in white feminist spaces. Some Kimberle Crenshaw as well for the origin of (the term) intersectional feminism, even!

The Complete List of Everything Death Note*

*so far excluding merchandising like figures, keychains, plushies, etc. A pretty good masterlist of that can be found on the website for the anime itself!

This list is being kept up to date to the best of my abilities, but reblogs don’t update the content. For maximum accuracy, please visit the source post. If any links are broken or you have something to add, please let me know!

All links for reading and watching are examples - other sources might be available and I encourage legally purchasing the media when possible.

Manga-related Media:

  • Manga (12 Volumes, 108 chapters) -  (x, x, x - English), (x - Japanese) The source canon and original story. The link contains high quality scans of the official English translation by VIZ. Many manga-reading sites display scanlations instead, which’s translation you should take with a grain of salt. The Death Note scanlations are known to be faulty.
  • ‘The C-Kira Case’ / “Chapter 109″  - (x - English) A bonus one-shot manga, taking place after the manga’s finale.
  • Death Note Pilot Chapter - (x) One-Shot manga that was published before the main series to test interest for the concept. It does not relate to the main manga.
  • 2020 Oneshot / Special Chapter (x) An all-new special one-shot with a one-off plotline.
  • Death Note: Another Note - (x - English), (x - Japanese) A novel that is set before the manga, in the manga universe.
  • How To Read 13 - (x - Japanese only, x - English) Bonus Volume to the manga, including character profiles, creator interviews and other special pages. The English version is not currently available online, but VIZ has published an official translation.
  • ‘One Day’ (x - English) & ‘The Wammy’s House’ (x - English)  - (x - Japanese) Two L-centric one-shots that were published in ‘L File No. 15′, a photobook for the third movie (see below). Since they were made as part of a movie-verse publication, I personally think they are movie!L not manga!L, but there are dissenting opinions, so I’m linking them here.
  • Blanc Et Noir (Artbook) (x - Illustrations), (x - Artist’s comments) Takeshi Obata’s artbook. It contains more than just Death Note, but Death Note is the majority of it. All his illustrations are printed here and given commentary. There currently aren’t any actual scans of the commentary, but I linked my own translations of them (based on the official German).
  • Full color Re-release - (x) In 2012, Shounen Jump released some of its popular manga in full color. There is no otherwise new content and it is only available in Japanese. (There have been some efforts to typeset the official translation into them, but they have not been completed.)

Anime-related Media:

  • Anime (37 episodes) - (x) Animated adaptation of the manga. Fairly accurate, but cuts a lot of content in the second half. Available on Netflix.
  • Death Note /A Animation Official Analysis Guide (x) The guidebook for the anime production, including interviews, character profiles, design art, etc. There are tidbit translations in this tag.
  • Death Note Relight: Visions of a God (OVA) - (x) - OVA that is primarily a retelling of the first arc. There are few new scenes in it. It has an alternative ending and does not count towards the canon anime timeline.
  • Death Note Relight 2: L’s Successors (OVA) - (x) A retelling of the second arc that features a lot more new scenes and completely alters the timeline. Also non-canon.
  • Death Note Settei - (x) Design works for the anime that came extra with the DVD release.
  • Original Sound Track - (x - Tracklist & Booklet
  • Original Sound Track II - (x - Tracklist & Booklet)
  • Original Sound Track III - (x - Tracklist & Booklet)

Did some long over-due maintenance on this today! All links should now be up to date - plus, links to the two translated DS games, as well as the animation guidebook have been added!

Here is your annual reminder that if you want to read Homestuck but find it a little intimidating or are just not a big reader, Lets Read Homestuck by Team Voxus has completed all but the tail end of Homestuck.

LRHS starts out a little rough in the beginning, but the 'beginning' accounts for, like, less than four hours. Out of the total runtime of over 62 hours.

Also the voice actors are fucking tremendous and I will never stop saying that the voice actors for Karkat and Rose deserves an award for their work during Act 5.2.

Oh and if you're like me and need background noise to work, I uh I ripped all of the audio for every episode of LRHS and put it on my phone. It's organized with a audiobook app called Sirin.

Here is my GDrive folder with all the mp3s.

so i study decolonization, as in i studied it as part of my degree, and i thought I'd make a list of some readings/films that might offer additional insight about decolonization (it also helps if you're tired of the christian moralistic thinking)

  • occupation 101 (can be found on youtube i believe, it's about the history between isreal and palestine, it focuses on palestinians and it is quite comprehensive. there's live footage, there's interviews with palestinian children, etc. it's a must watch i think, regarding palestine. it points the finger squarely at the united states.)
  • the wretched of the earth, franz fanon. fanon is really well known in the decolonization sphere because he writes about it in a very succinct and clear way. to him, decolonization can never occur peacefully, and i think that's a really important key lesson. he also talks about how colonizers don't just take land, they reframe ideas, they take language, art, thoughts.
  • the battle of algiers, 1966. this is a fascinating film, it's sort of a documentary, they got the actual people to play their parts. it describes and interviews the main individuals involved in the fight for independence within Algiers. i think understanding how a nation can gain independence over its colonial forces is really important in the grand scheme of decolonialism.
  • unthinking eurocentrism. if you can get your hands on it, i love this text. it's so poignant and it lays everything out so clearly and it really shows how we center our worlds around eurocentrism and westernism.

"Shouldn't the man who invented the iPhone own his own creation?"

An explanation by anti-capitalist brad pitt.

"Mazzucato lists twelve crucial technologies that make smartphones “smart”: (1) microprocessors;(2) memory chips; (3) solid state hard drives; (4) liquid crystal displays; (5) lithium-based batteries;(6) fast Fourier transform algorithms; (7) the internet; (8) HTTP and HTML protocols; (9) cellular networks; (10) Global Positioning Systems (GPS); (11) touchscreens; and (12) voice recognition. Every last one was supported by the public sector at key stages of development."
