I haven't finished it yet but I love you cowboy bebop for actually committing to making the world so very visibly racially diverse. An episode of cowboy bebop has more black characters in it than entire arcs of some long running anime
oh, i also noticed this was true of fat characters! i cant remember the episode exactly, but when early on spike stopped by a convenience store to catch up with an old friend who happened to be a fat woman with like, no gags, no references to it, drawn perfectly accurately i was genuinely amazed. its such a nice treat when youre used to watching anime where everyone has the same body type, skin color, face shape— bebop even has a range of ages displayed thats rare to see (just in the main cast, all the protagonists seem to be about a decade apart in age, with ed on the youngest side and jet on the oldest.)
I've always loved this quote from Shinichiro Watanabe. It's very much done with intention.
