Visited a cathedral today with the toddler

It was very odd that somewhere so deeply linked to my childhood is completely foreign to her

'so this is a church, people are quiet here, like a library'
'people have lit these candles as prayers'
'prayers are... prayers are where you wish and hope for something you really want'
'that's actually a very famous lady and a baby'
'look the baby grew up into that man there, lots of people think he was important'
'...no he's not really having a good time is he'
'not because he was naughty'
'ah no the lady wasn't naughty either'

@laugh-out-laud I cannot convey the tone of absolute certainty nor the nod of decisiveness which accompanied this moment

I’ve seen many former Christian fundamentalists children discuss how they developed pretty significant anxiety from staunch Christian beliefs. The concept that you’re always being surveilled, even your thoughts, and that your soul will be forever tortured if you’re “bad” is crippling to many.

The Eucharist being the Catholic version of the communion, during which the bread and wine transubstantiate into the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ, who is fully human and fully divine. For non-catholics, the question isn’t wherther or not transubstantiation happens, the question is do you consider that belief and the ritual based on that belief to be cannibalistic.

Look, we joke a lot, but really, "you were born evil, wretched, worse than the scum of the earth, and it took killing a god to make you salvageable, so now you'd better be grateful to that god and thank him 10,000 times a day for it and fill your thoughts with him 24/7 and abide by the letter of his every word, lest you suffer unimaginable torture for all of eternity" is a truly horrendous thing to believe about yourself and other people

i think i said this one before but i remember we used to go to church and one day on the way i just out of the blue asked the car "how do we know god is real? what if people just made him up" and the adults all got super mad at me and gave me generic answers like "we just know" and stuff and my ass was fucking CURIOUS so when church started i asked the Sunday School teacher and she was like "well the bible was written about him" or something like that and i was like "but someone wrote Curious George and hes not real, what if someone made him up too" and she was like irritated but was like "he's a talking monkey of course hes not real, children just like fun stories" or something like that and i don't remember exactly what i said but it was something very close to "but adults like stories too! how do you know he's not made up so because adults want to believe in something too?" and she got SUPER mad and i had to apologize in front of the church but i saw an opportunity so i was like "but no one answered me so i still dont know and i guess you guys don't either" and [everyone] got super mad and none of us could go to that church anymore

the adults were okay to go to church again but me and my siblings had sundays off from that point on and that was kind of a catalyst for the way my brother and sister perceived religion

Because there's always someone who didn't know this yet: Evangelical Christians also await the extermination of all Jewish people as part of these prophecies. They support Israel only with the expectation that both Muslims and Jews will all be sacrificed for Jesus.

i've seen people get confused at the fact that as aspec visibility increases, conservatives have started calling asexuality perverted, because asexuality is hard to present as hypersexual. First of all this is conflating sexual attraction and sexual behavior, ace people aren't all virgin sex repulsed celibates or live like monks. But i get that given how little conservatives know about ace people it is fair to assume they'd make that assumption. More importantly, this is missing the aspect of the christian conception of sexuality as a temptation that must be, first of all never spoken about, recognizing your own lack of sexual attractiong is knowing too much sexual education in their eyes, second, overcome to prove your love for god, third, is not up to you to define but up to god. If you feel no attraction, there's no virtue in not "committing the sin of carnal desire", and ace people who have sex are seen as doing so outside of strict bodily neccessity and thereful sinful as well. Plus of course the regular belief that every human must procreate and it's god's design that they have kids to further the species etc etc

even if you're not a supernatural fan, if you've been on tumblr long enough you are, like, culturally. like cultural christianity in america except it's the cw's supernatural. you may never have watched an episode or set foot inside the tag but your regular life shuts down on their holidays and all of your world news is delivered through that point of view. something to think about

the intersecting needs of christian childrens cartoons to make all biblical figures both painfully average looking white people and as un-sexualized as possible creates a hellish world where all of humanity is descended from 2 Jon Arbuckles

I’m gonna need a sketch concept of Garfield as the Snake on my desk by 5.

I may have to cleanse my computer after this act of sacrilege.

Being raised by areligious jews with 0 exposure to christianity outside pop culture is so fun. One time I asked my ex-catholic friend why a picture of jesus had a bristle crown and she looked at me like I was insane. One time I heard someone mention the "lance of longinus" and responded, word for word, "Like from Evangelion?" One time during a history lesson my professor described an important monk and scholar as "Dominican" and I spent the rest of class super confused and hung up on it because I was very sure that the Dominican Republic didn't meaningfully exist as an entity back then, maybe she meant he was a native Taino or something but that's a weird way to say that and I'm pretty sure this was pre- European contact? Really fucks people up when they realize I genuinely have no idea.

This but it's my partner taking an art history class in college and the professor looking at them like they grew a second head when they answered "What came out of Jesus' wound when he was stabbed on the cross" with "...Blood?"

Additions that prove my point by mystifying me because what on earth would come out of a nail wound besides blood. Are you telling me it was something besides blood. What was jesus full of that wasn't blood. You guys are scaring me

Apparently it was water?? I guess he was also stabbed on top of being crucified (which feels like overkill imo) and water came out, which was a huge deal in medieval symbolism and also to my medieval poetry professor, who was genuinely shocked and upset that I didn’t know. This man fully docked me points because I, a whole ass Jew, hadn’t somehow heard about the secret waterballoon Jesus lore that I guess everyone is supposed to like… intuit

On the plus side, it does lead to some absolutely wild medieval Jesus art of angels tapping him like a fucking keg

a friend of a friend went to go see passion of the christ for kicks without knowing anything about the story

when jesus was hauled up on the cross he turned to my friend and said, in all evident sincerity, 'i know they're not going to kill the main character but how's jesus getting out of this one?'
