One of my favorite things is modern adaptations that leave people with the same careers they had in the original material, because unless you’re a cop or a doctor that practically never happens.

Irene Adler’s an opera singer. We still have those! They don’t have the same subtext exactly, but nothing is going to because we aren’t the Victorians. She could continue to be an opera singer. I have never seen this happen.

Jonathan Harker can still be in real estate. That’s a job people have. A modern story that still involves Dracula contacting his firm to help him purchase property sounds amazing actually.

A modern adaptation of Dracula where you keep seeing Jonathan Harker’s face on bus stop bench ads for his realtor office.

I was about to joke about Quincey Morris still being a cowboy, but then it occurred to me that he’s not actually a cowboy in the source material, is he? He’s the wealthy heir of a Texas ranch-owning family who just acts like an Old West cowboy. If anything, that’s even more plausible today than it was in 1897.

I’m pretty sure this post predates Dracula Daily. I first saw it before I had heard of it and I didn’t know who Jonathan was.

it's simply impossible to please everyone with an adaptation of a beloved franchise and that's why they should give death note to me so i can make everyone angry in a new and fun way. my death note film will be a bleak 90 minutes with no soundtrack other than an eerie pulsing hum and it will be successor arc only. light is there but you don't see him. you hear him only as a crackling voice over the phone. L isn't there but sometimes near and mello see his shadows in the mirrors. it cuts right before the warehouse to leave light's fate ambiguous and ends with a long, silent shot of near walking through the morgue on the way to identify matt and mello's corpses.

bad dracula movie idea: centering the story around dracula, slutshaming/sexualizing lucy, making mina dracula's wife, having jonathan cheat on mina etc.

good dracula movie idea: just the book plot in movie format. jonathan is a wife guy, lucy is sweet, mina is a nerd, van helsing is the corn metaphor professor 🌽,there is a surprisingly angsty cowboy character that shoots batcula with a gun, seward has a bi awakening and all the wolves are good boys.

chaotic dracula movie idea: just the most over the top shit you have ever seen. mina is the ultimate girlboss, lucy is so sweet it makes the audience's teeth rot through the screen, seward is just an awkward nerd with thick glasses and zero success with women, van helsing is the best vampire hunter in the world, every dracula appearance is accompanied with a slapstick joke ridiculing him, quincey wears a cowboy hat that keeps getting bigger and bigger every time he appears and most importantly by the end it's revealed that the whole story is not told by the main characters' pov but rather it was just van helsing narrating his version of the story to put young quincey to sleep, which immediately explains all the corniness (pun most definitely intended) the poor audience just witnessed.
