I was thinking on my afternoon walk yesterday that the layout of rural French villages looks particularly cosy in winter, with a handful of houses huddling for warmth around a central plaza with its bakery and little church and drinking fountain—and then at night I was reading a blog of Korean poetry in translation and came across this poem by Kim Yong-taek:
Have you entered a snowy village in the evening? Have you seen a snowy village where snow falls from the sky and the village quietly receives it? As you enter the village, all the roads of the world end […] The snow that has come to this world after living in the sky carefully descends, dropping its feet on the dark roofs of this world, with its two eyes closed.
