Some people in the notes are about the in-fic rationalization and as someone who was part of an "exclusive" 1D Wattpad Google+ hangout, as a 12 year old, I think it's my time to shine, here's a comprehensive list of reasons for why 1D was buying a person:
1. It's set in a world where slavery and/or the buying and selling of people is legal because of ABO dynamics/ Dom-Sub as physiological and psychological classifications or the character is an "hybrid"/mutant who can be bought and sold
2. Y/N was a high school best friend/high school best friend's sister and when the band hears about them being sold they buy them to "protect" and "save them"
3. Y/N was bought by a nefarious Management ™️ officials and introduced to 1D as a "maid" and they don't know the truth
Thank you for clarifying that this is FICTION. it is a FICTIONAL story, a joke from a FAN FICTION. because I was very confused and concerned.
