For people wondering where the rape joke was in Age of Ultron
(and I don’t blame you, it’s subtle, which makes its inclusion even creepier, and it’s generally good to have evidence of these things)
In the “let’s-all-try-to-lift-Mjolnir” scene, Tony’s line is changed from the trailer; in the trailer, it’s “I will be fair but firm-ly cruel”. In the movie, however, it’s “I will be re-instituting Primae Nocta”
Primae Nocta is a “medieval custom” (for which we have no actual contemporary evidence) whereby the overlord of a peasant couple would have the ‘right of the first night’ with the new wife should he so wish, being legally able to rape her on this night. (It’s the same concept as Droit de Seigneur)
The fact that the line from the trailer (which was actually a good joke) to the one from the movie (rape joke, ooc for Tony Stark, misogynist) is extremely disturbing, especially as the primae nocta joke would only be understood by a proportion of the audience - in effect, Whedon replaced a joke with one that allowed him to stealthily be misogynist, which is… quite worrying, actually.
