Some of the actresses of Romani descent suggested for Wanda Maximoff, who is canonically half Romani in the comics, following the MCU’s whitewashed portrayal of her. Romani representation is vitally important and Marvel has a responsibility to represent Scarlet Witch, whose heritage is an integral part of her character, respectfully and accurately.
Wanda deserved better.

MAN CAN WE TAKE A MINUTE TO TALK ABOUT VISION and his relationship with Wanda and how it contrasts with Clint??

Read More Now!

Read More Now! Read More Now!

So much this.  I kind of wanted to expand on the amygdala conversation a bit more.

Okay so first off there’s a massive factual flaw in saying ‘they can’t help but fear you its their amygdala’.  The amygdala is often described as a ‘fear centre’, which is a massive oversimplification of what it does and how fear actually works, but its a useful one, so lets stick with it for now.  Saying ‘well its just their amygdala’ is like looking at an antique watch and saying ‘well its not really telling time, its just a bunch of gears turning’.  Like, no shit Sherlock, that’s how watches work.  I’m a cognitive neuroscientist, I hear variations of this a lot and it drives me nuts.

And second off, doesn’t his little ‘well humans are like that, its their amygdalae’ thing just sound exactly like some jerk saying ‘well your just PMSing, its just your hormones’, to an upset woman.

And I’m sort of triply pissed at Vision because we see how this ends for the people around him.  2 Avengers make technical mistakes that hurt people in this film:

Wanda tries to get Crossbones up into the air before he explodes, but she doesn’t lift him high enough.  Maybe she really was only thinking about his potential victims on the ground and should have lifted him up and away from that building, instead of just up, or maybe she just wasn’t fast enough, but either way, it was a good sensible plan, it just didn’t work.  But she’s really obviously horrified about what happened.

Vision is told to shoot Sam out of the sky and doesn’t check his line of fire, so when Sam dodges, he hits Rhdoey.  Which, like, I’m not a soldier, I’ve never handled so much as a paintball gun in my entire life and I still know that when you’re shooting stuff you’re supposed to make sure you won’t accidentally hit things behind you.  Vision’s been trained as an Avenger, there’s no excuse for such a stupid error.  And that’s not even mentioning that we saw what that shot did to Rhodey, who wears a full suit of titanium armour, what would it have done to Sam!  And all he has to say about that is ‘I didn’t think I was capable of being distracted.’

let me explain something

even if this is brainwashing

even if this is just an act

even if this gets retconned

even if this is nothing more than a dumb publicity stunt

it is part of an on-going trend at marvel that shows the appalling lack of respect they have for jewish characters and creators and the bizarre, sickening romanticizing of hydra, a nazi organization.

steve rogers is the creation of two jewish men who took a stand against nazism at a time when it was not popular to do so, and they received many threats for doing so. he was intended to be political; the first thing you see him do is punch hitler in the face. even if this new twist ends up being reversed or made into an elaborate ruse, we now know that marvel is willing to jeopardize this legacy for publicity. they don’t see it as disrespectful to toy around and twist the creation of two jewish men like this.

wanda maximoff and pietro maximoff, the jewish-romani children of holocaust survivors, are actively having their jewish heritage erased by marvel higher ups who say thing like “can you point me to a single story, just one, in which the ‘fact’ that wanda and pietro come from a jewish background is in any way relevant?”. not only this, but their jewish identities are being erased in the mcu and replaced with christian identities (wanda has a cross hanging in her room), while also re-imagining them as hydra nazi volunteers. this from the same mcu that routinely hires jewish actors and actresses and then erases their identities such as with natalie portman, kat dennings, rdj, gwyneth paltrow, and paul rudd; in the cases of some jewish actors like jon berthanal they actively replace his jewish identity with a christian one by making the punisher a (lapsed) catholic.

all the while they continue to glamorize the nazi organization hydra, playing up the meme status of “hail hydra”, having their employees wear hydra merch and describe themselves as hydra in their twitter bios. they even released a comic about an agent of hydra, intended to be a comedy, slice of life thing. you were intended to feel bad for hank, the protagonist, because he just saw it as a job and joined because of the tough economy, ignoring the fact that this was the case for many real world nazis as well. magneto, a jewish holocaust survivor, was villainized and basically held responsible for endangering the world because he attempted to kill the red skull, a nazi who was setting up new concentration camps. it was also the title in which his paternal relationship with wanda and pietro was erased. the series name was axis.

this is not cute. this is not the type of stuff that can or should be ignored. this is just further proof of a seriously alarming trend going on at marvel, where they think flirting with nazi organizations is fun and ignoring and actively erasing the identities of jewish characters and the contributions of jewish creators is okay. do. not. ignore. this.

Because [Wanda’s] power is so intense we look for ways to make her vulnerable and make her powers vulnerable, and sometimes you go through emotional channels to do that. That’s something we’re very much playing with in Civil War, complicating her emotional state and having that interplay with limitations or issues she may have with her abilities, we do that with all the characters, we look for their vulnerabilities. So moving her forward I think that will remain a dimension of her, an important dimension of how we tell her story because she is so powerful.

Naturally, Doctor Strange will have no such emotional vulnerabilities.

Vision #7 by Tom King & Michael Walsh

I asked this when this book first started and I’ll ask it again: Why would Wanda, who has spent her entire life trying not to be a slave, who is the descendant of actual slaves, help someone make a slave? How do you miss the whole point of a character that badly? So much of her struggle is about trying to retain the right to her own body. How do you not notice that?

Or maybe Tom King really doesn’t understand how consent works and doesn’t get that making a wife isn’t the same thing as “finding” one. He doesn’t realize that this is all, y’know, rape.

We went to Saló del Comic on saturday and had a blast!!! I was sick and sleep deprived (hence my I’m Dying Inside face in most pics) but it was the best con we’ve ever been to by far! The crew  (@scarlett-letters-on-the-wall, @aoitsukinoikkai and @cutie-pie-sunshine   ) put together some great cosplays. I fulfilled my lifelong dream of cosplaying Wanda and met a ton of amazing people :D

Step 3 and Step 4

Marvel picked one of the thumbnail designs they really liked and we played around with it a bit.  This step was about introducing more superhero-y elements.  What footwear, what arm treatments?  I loved keeping the gloves, but then what kind?  They had already picked a headpiece design they liked so how that went with the new outfit mattered as well.

In the last step they had sent back notes and we had honed in on the first design in Step 3 and then it was all about the smaller details.  They wanted an upside down W on her somewhere.  They also wanted to see how her costume looked with two of the coat options they really liked (one of which was a capelet).  I really pushed to keep her boots black like her pants because I loved the starkness and graphicness against the red of her coat/cape.  They finally settled on the capelet which I think is a fun combination of heroics and fashion :P.

Step 1 and 2 here.  I’ll try to do some turns of the final design soon as well!
