Frankenstein's Monster except Frankenstein is not a scientist but a random kid who learned a bit too much about monsters and revival techniques from around the world because his parents drag him along while they travel a lot for "Work" and now that he's old enough to live on his own he tries EVERYTHING he learned using ALL THE MONSTER PARTS at once to create himself a friend. Shenanigans ensue.

The parents are rarity hunters who specialize in gathering body parts, taxidermy and other forms of creatures from around the world to sell to collectors. Naturally, they own quite a lot of pieces themselves which they bring to their mansion whenever they make a short stop at home during their never-ending world tour.

Victor, who has been dragged along on his parent's travels ever since his birth, has had enough of never staying in one place for more than a week and decides to stay in the mansion the second he's old enough to do so.

His parents are skeptical at first but eventually agree and hire an old acquaintance to be Victor's butler to keep an eye on their son and so he's not completely on his own all of a sudden. Finally having the opportunity to make proper connections with his peers, Victor decides to befriend the town's people. Little does he know, he has no social skills. Who would've thunk. It's not like he's never had a meaningful social connection with anyone besides his parents and very questionable adults.

the problem with sitting down to write with a blank page is that instead of outlining or drafting anything, I sit and vividly hallucinate the highlights of the scene for twenty minutes

then I have to resist drawing it

noob, i do it for three hours and then cry as I become aware there is no point in even attempting drawing it as I lack the skill to ever capture even the tiniest fragment of the epicness of the scene

Can someone explain to me why people who live in extremely cold regions get ice making powers and people who live in deserts get fire powers? In isolated cases sure, but when it’s common magic in their entire people group that seems to just have evolved somewhere in the evolutionary timeline of that world? It makes no god damn sense!

What I mean with isolated cases is for example a single person/ select group receiving powers in some way, but in a world where magic is a common ability across species? Where it evolved through evolution? You could argue it evolved so they could utilise their harsh environments but that feels like the second step not the first?? The first step is to survive, so in a hostile environment that means counteracting the hostile environment not making more of it???

Like ice bears got fur not ice breath????

Oh no! My magic system has taken my soul! (why you are working too hard on your magic system)

I don't say this a lot, but the ideas around creating magic systems are way too strict. People will go to writing checklists and follow "writing experts" advice. It'll be something like "what is the cost of using magic?" or "who can use it", which are fine. If that helps you, continue doing it.

In my humble opinion—

YOU DO NOT NEED TO FOLLOW A DIFFERENT SET OF RULES FOR THIS PART OF YOUR STORY! Honestly, that's probably going to make it a lot harder.

What type of magic/supernatural occurrence works for the story you are telling?

Do that.

If you need less of a power imbalance, create costs of using magic. If you need limitations, add limitations. If your story works better without them, don't include them.

All you need to do is make sure you are consistent.

DO WHATEVER SERVES YOUR STORY, NOTHING MORE OR LESS IS NEEDED!

To add to this (bc this is what most ppl who’ve asked me are struggling with):

If you want to include a bunch of different types of magic without making a soft magic system while also not making it too complicated/nonsensical, go more basic with the rules. As in laws of nature basic. Treat magic as a force of nature and set very basic rules as laws of physics and chemistry and whatever the fuq else there is.

As an example: the magic system I use for pretty much all of my stories has magical energy as an omnipresent (~°^°)~ flow of energy through the universe that living beings evolved to be able to metabolise and redirect into causing other natural phenomena (physical and chemical reactions). This also means that almost all living beings have basic skills in magic. Shelled and scaly creatures know how to harden their shields when danger approaches ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ, prey know how to hide their presence ^^while predators enhance their senses and physical abilities when on the hunt (● ˃̶͈̀ロ˂̶͈́)੭ꠥ⁾⁾.

In more intelligent species the people of the north inherently know how to redirect the energy in their bodies to spark a flame while the people of the south know how to keep cool even in temperatures that could otherwise be deadly.

The ones who dedicate their lives to studying (๑•ૅㅁ•๑) and practicing magic become capable of using highly complex high magic. And then eventually in the far future, when the laws of magic are discovered and understood in their entirety, they become the basis of magi-tech sci-fi. ╰(*´︶`*)╯♡

It sounds much more complicated than it is so to summarise: the rules basically are

1. magic is absofucking everywhere, energy go brrrr ʕ•̫͡•ʕ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʕ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʕ•̫͡•ʕ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʕ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʔ

2. everything with a soul can metabolise that energy into other forms of energy (thermal, kinetic, electric etc) and redirect it to a certain extent/ whatever makes sense for the species

3. everything after that is just pseudoscience physics and chemistry according to my very basic and tbh almost pathetic knowledge of those things

  • To make fire: concentrate magic and convert until everything burns \\\٩(๑`^´๑)۶////
  • To stay cool: make energy vacuum so the laws of physics handle the rest and convert the thermal energy into magic to fill the vacuum (entropy)
  • To levitate: concentrate magic in feet and ground so the energies push against each other (entropy again)
  • To become a vampire: magic virus (EVOLUTION (╰ ಠ□ಠ )╯)

A system this „scientific“ of course isn’t as mystical and mysterious as others Σ(-᷅_-᷄๑) but the thing is, your reader doesn’t need to know all of it. You can show them only the parts they need to know, throw in some fancy language like „the essence of the universe“ ٩( ᐛ )و, invent spells and rituals that the people of your world believe in whether they actually work or not @(・●・)@ (which your reader also doesn’t need to know) and you get a fully functional magic system that allows for all kinds of magic to exist alongside each other without being an amalgamation of random stuff, seemingly thrown together without thought, just because you wanted to have in your story.

You can of course still have all the stuff just because you wanted to have it in the story, but now you can bullshit an explanation in under 5 minutes explain it.

Takes a bit of (not really deep, like 20 minutes per topic maybe) research but it’s so worth it.

Writing Advice:

1. Write what's in your heart

2. Wait, hold up

3. THIS is what's in your heart?

4. Dear god

5. Your poor characters.

6. Why is there so much blood and death?

You should see what I daydream before I fall asleep

You should see what I daydream when I don’t want to work

Currently gaining access to the 10k words fic my sister and her bff wrote about one of her teachers.

The entire school has read it and apparently a new chapter is anonymously added every other week by a different student.

Ok so turns out the 10k referred to just the first two parts my sister and her friend wrote.

Oh my god there’s over 25 chapters and almost 20 authors.

My library (tag game)

Thanks @brotrustmeicanwrite for tagging me to make a little library of stuff I wrote that I want others to see. Here is their library. I'm tagging @charlies-storybook @sourrcandy @charitet @innocentlymacabre to compile their writing in a library. Rules are below!

My poetry zine:

This magazine is a 25 double-sided pdf with a unique typographical design, including 11 English collab poems, 3 English poems and 21 German poems with 23 matching black & white photos. You can buy it for the low price of a small coffee (3€) or pay more to support me.

My ya fantasy wip (wip page and masterpost)

Synopsis: Enya Arati, a half-breed of dragon and human, seeks revenge for her murdered family. She flees from her hometown Trevena and travels through the magical forest Avni, the high mountains of Zaltana and even the ocean in search of other dragon-borns. Humans, elafids, dwarfs, giants, satyrs and magical beings like faeries, elves, witches, and mages either help her or hunt her down. Will she get her revenge and set Trevena on fire? Or will her girlfriend, the siren Meara Kailani, help her forgive and chose a different path?

My flash fiction on AO3:

All my poetry collaborations:

Rules

  1. Add one or more of your projects, finished or WIP, text or other media as long as it tells a story.
  2. Add a link instead of text or images, so everything stays neat and organised.
  3. Add a short description (feel free to use mine as a template)
  4. Add TWs where necessary; If the tag would spoil too much add „TW proceed with caution“.
  5. Tag at least 3 other people for every link you add.
  6. If you weren’t tagged please still participate!
  7. If you don’t want to participate, you can still tag other people you’d like to see here.

Tag list under the cut. Never miss a poem or a short story I write! Comment + if you want to be added or - to be removed from my tag list.

I don’t write my characters, my characters write themselves and I just pick up the broken pieces left by their ill advised hijinks and repressed traumas and try to cobble them together into a coherent narrative

Ha! Now they can’t murder me for their stories. It’s their own fault!!

Haha, funny story

You know that awkward moment you get so fixated on a chapter, and the words are just going, and then you check your word count at the end and you’ve accidentally written 8038 words over the course of two days?

Just me?

In 7th grade I wrote 1.5 - 3k words Wattpad chapters a day every day for 37 days until I burned myself out so hard that I haven’t been able to write anything but dialogue and bullet point skripts since.

So yeah, not just you.

Holy shit I just realised that’s somewhere between 55.5k and 111k words the fuck was my 7th grade self on??

I think we all feel that to some level (though you definitely broke the box a little), I know I still have notebooks full of stuff I hand wrote as a kid, that will probably never see a computer screen

100%!!! I had lost the login for that account for years but last autumn I finally got it back and I was so happy reading all of my old WIPs. Most surprising to me was that the writing genuinely sounded good too. Like the story was shit (part of the reason I stopped back then) but the words sounded really nice lol

Oh nice!!!! It’s awesome to do that sometimes, to see where you came from, the things that have stayed the same, how far you’ve come.

It’s like meeting a part of me I left in that notebook years ago, and has finally rejoined my soul

It can be pretty bitter-sweet too tho…

You may find old and forgotten stories that you used to love but you might also remember what you were capable of and why you’ve lost the spark that used to fuel you. The burnout from those 37 and something chapters was one thing but in 8th-10th grade I had a German teacher who…. lets say… didn’t vibe with my writing. And the worst part is she was nice and she liked me. So when one bad grade after the other almost made me repeat the year three years in a row and no amount of practice ever helped even a little bit…. I believed her. Reading those old WIPs after so many years definitely made me ugly cry when I realised that it never was as bad as she made it out to be. It was good actually. It just wasn’t her style.

This reblog took a pretty dark turn pretty quickly but I just can’t help but wonder just how many writers and other creatives we’ve lost because of one bad influence.

When your a kid, and just starting to find yourself, adults don’t even know how much power they hold over you

I feel like so many people who had so much potential were shoved down because “you’re not good enough”, “I don’t like your writing”, “it’s not traditional”

I used to tell my dad everything about what I was writing, and he always seemed supportive on the surface, but a talk about my commitment to school, and distractions would always seem to follow, until my brain began to link what I loved, to be scolded

I still update him occasionally, but I play down everything I do, I don’t gush about it, I don’t offer to share my writing

Because he broke my trust, and made me hate the thing I loved so much. I lost a part of myself in those words, and while coming back can be a blessing, a memory from when times were simpler, you’re right, and sometimes it just a reminder of what you’ve lost

I think in that regard the internet is such a blessing. Even when you manage to fall back in love with your creativity, pursuing it can come with so much guilt. But online you can be anonymous. No one has to know it’s you, it’s just some random person on the internet posting random silly little things. And there are other random people posting random silly little things too. And all of these random people get to see and love each other’s silly little things instead of being all alone. A shitty teacher or dad aren’t very easy to get rid of, if that’s possible at all, but online we have all the power to remove unsupportive people with just a handful of clicks.

We here at the burnout central hereby name you our monarch

Hope your words return one day <3333

I just took out the calculator and realised that’s actually somewhere between 55k to 111k words. From a fucking 7th grader! I was fucking 13!!

We need to find whatever higher-dimensional magical sci-fi drug my kid self was on because that amount is absolutely ridiculous

Like how
