memeception
WE’VE HIT TERMINAL MEME
I’ve said “I hate this” so many times on this website, and never actually meant it, because “I hate this” is just shorthand for ‘this is an example of a meme given a twist I wasn’t expecting with intent to surprise’. Which is, in of itself, a meme on this site. God damn it.
But this… This is something else.
The rapidity of a meme’s introduction to its zenith to its decline is so rapid that in ten years, you’ll need a damn twenty-page manual to explain this. It’ll be as unfunny and hard to explain as jokes in Shakespeare plays, except even more inexplicable because fuck, at least Shakespeare’s jokes are usually about anal or fucking your mother, good wholesome sex jokes we can all get behind.
For the love of fuck, how do you explain loss.jpg? How do you explain gun?
….I THOUGHT THIS WAS A YMCA REFERENCE
it is a YMCA reference - that’s one of the 6 memes being represented here
ok let me see if i can break this down easily. YMCA is the easiest place to start - the song itself has become a meme over time with people changing the lyrics to reference other pop cultural events. so YMCA is meme one (1)
this first lyric replacement (”take the breadsticks and run”) is a reference to the tumblr meme ‘stuffing breadsticks into my purse’. i think everyone remembers that one so i wont bother to explain it. that’s meme two (2)
“man door hand hook car door” is a meme of its own, a creepypasta from i dont remember when. it was a terrible stupid retelling of the generic ‘stuck in a car while hook handed man tries to kill us’ story so the stupid title caught on for memorability. that in and of itself is meme three (3)
‘gun’ is… yeah i dont know how to explain gun. long story short you add gun to the end of a phrase instead of what you expect the last word to be. its shock funny. its everywhere but its popular to add to “man door hand hook car door” for.. some reason? gun is meme four (4)
and the thing is, this four meme combo is something thats gone around before. meme combos are, itself, a meme. which means taking this meme combo and mixing in another meme actually becomes meme five (5)
which leaves us at loss.jpg. loss.jpg was a terrible bad comic supposed to be about some tragic event, but it was presented so poorly literally no one takes it seriously, and for some reason recreating the four-panel setup has become popular. so thats meme six (6)
(but i need to add that this is the greatest version of loss.jpg i think i’ve ever seen. the initial ‘young man’ lines up with the guy bursting through the door, and the shock meme ‘gun’ matches the shock scene of the woman in the hospital and idk if OP even thought about that but it makes this just so much better)
I wasn’t going to reblog this, but @pagesofkenna‘s comprehensive meme-by-meme annotation is a thing of beauty and should be shared.
average tumblr post contains one meme, this post, which contains six, is an outlier and should not be counted
it might also just be a coincidence due to loss.jpg’s format but the whole white minimalist four-panel setup is also suspiciously reminiscent of those early 2000’s rage comics
I was getting a political compass vibe too
tag urself im man door hand hook car gun
This works better than I thought it would.
This was in my senior project
I’m not sorry.

I hope you know this is the most cursed addition to my post, and I love it
THIRTEEN!?
SOMEONE EDIT THIS FROM THE ORIGINAL PHOTO SAYING “this one does not spark joy” TO THIS VERSION SAYING “this one sparks joy”
why—
IM SCREAMING
This is the most elaborate meme I have ever seen and damn am I concerned by how it makes sense.
“You’re in your 30s, but you still understand all this meme stuff?” “Oh yeah, sure.” “Can you explain it to me?” “I absolutely fucking cannot.”
One does not simply explain this
Edit:
Another freaking layer!!!
16 motherfucking layers
In the future someone’s going to ask me to explain this and I’m going to be at a loss.jpg for words
I’m not reblogging this because I want to. I’m reblogging this because sometimes you’re a witness to history whether you want to be or not, and you have to embrace that.

World Heritage Post
honestly tho that scene in the incredibles where mr. incredible sees the names of all the old super heroes that used to be his friends / that he knew from Back in the Day and how every one of them has been killed by syndrome is such a chilling scene for so many reasons
like for one, everyone he knew is dead at this point and has been killed on the same island he’s at now and two, its heartbreaking bc that means that almost every hero wanted to try out being a hero again despite the laws against it and wanted to try and help someone out and relive their glory days, only to be straight up murdered like fuck that scene is just so fuckin intense
I think the core of that scene for me is, when you’re insane like me and you go through it frame by frame, you can work out that Gazerbeam defeated the omnidroid twice - the only super we have enough information to confirm did so. I always wondered about his body in the cave, how and why he got the password… But it makes sense. This thing goes haywire, gets an upgrade, and goes haywire again? He must have been hella suspicious! So he does what any good superhero would do - tries to get to the bottom of what’s really happening on Nomanisan Island. During the process he’s clearly caught and wounded but has just enough time to get himself somewhere he can leave a final message, just praying that the next super to come along will find it and break the cycle. Gazerbeam is my hero.
Incredibles 2 has a lot to live up to
All of this and…
I’m just realizing that the name is No Man Is An Island???? As in, everyone needs someone to depend on and connect with, no one is ever completely alone or should act all on their own.
Also Gazerbeam probably has X-ray vision–so he not only survived long enough to defeat the Omnidroid, he had the ability to see Syndrome entering the password.
Holy guacamole! I should pay more attention, I don’t think I got any of that stuff!
does anyone think about the fact that now mr. incredibles has to live w/ the fact that all his friends getting killed by syndrome could have been avoided if he had just been nicer to syndrome from the beginning
^I was thinking that from the beginning reading this and was shocked it went through so many comments before anyone pointed that out.
Syndrome waited until his machine was almost ready to go before asking Bob to come to Nomanisan. He also was surprised to find out that he was married to “Elastigirl”, which means he likely built his list and went through everyone else before finally deciding it was time to kill Bob.
Also, Syndrome literally didn’t find Bob until the start of the movie. He found Frozone and was stalking him. If Lucius hadn’t hung out with Bob, then Frozone was going to be the next one lured. There’s literally a scene of Mirage realizing that the guy in the car with her target is Mr. Incredible. He wasn’t going through the list, he was stalking and finding every former Super he could, luring them to the island, and then killing them, for the sake of improving his robot. Finding Bob was just a happy accident, and Syndromes obsession with him meant that upon finding a bot that could beat Bob, he figured he’d hit perfection and was ready.
and like, let’s be real here in the intro Buddy was crossing the line the second he showed up, Mr. Incredible mentioned he’d been very nice to Buddy, via signing a ridiculous amount of autographs and doing pictures and stuff, and that he was not going to risk a childs life as a sidekick (albeit in less words). Buddy literally showed up by breaking into his car, and then stalked him all evening until he was arrested. That’s disturbingly obsessive behavior, there’s no amount of niceness that would stop Syndrome, it was an impossible situation. No amount of nice was going to appease Syndrome, the second he faced any sort of rejection from Mr. Incredible he was going to lose it and go supervillain. After his arrest he should have gotten put into therapy, but yknow, set in like. the 50′s. so it makes sense he fell through the cracks when the cracks were a goddamn canyon. Don’t victim blame Mr. Incredible.
reblogging for the last comment because blaming mr incredible for the deaths of his comrades is honestly such a weird take and i dislike how it’s framed as “fact” when it’s not. it’s syndrome’s fault and syndrome’s fault alone. full stop. he murdered them because he was selfish, entitled, and obsessed with mr incredible to a fanatical degree.
You know what’s really great
In the beginning when Mr. Incredible says, “Go home, Buddy. I work alone.” He’s holding up Bomb Voyage
In Syndrome’s flashback, he’s looking down on him, no bad guy in sight
Do with that info what you will
oh
damn
This is such good analysis, but it’s also worth mentioning the difference between these two scenes which, supposedly depict the same thing. In the first, Bob is clearly busy, trying to keep his eyes on Bomb Voyage (a fantastic supervillain name!!!), so he is distractedly telling Buddy that he is busy and that he doesn’t need help. The lighting is realistic, and although he is CLEARLY fed up with dealing with this obsessive and toxic fan, he keeps an even tone and doesn’t snap at him.
In the flashback, it’s a different scenario completely!! The lighting is all focused on Bob as if he’s under a spotlight and it is only the two of them. Bob’s pose here is also ridiculously condescending. He has his hands on his hips like a superhero and is looking down at Buddy with contempt and scorn. In addition, when he turns to leave, he dismissively waves his hand as if saying “Get out of here.”
It’s also interesting to note Buddy’s position here. His arms are extended either in worship or as an expression of all he has to offer in this relationship. He sees himself as a victim because he thinks he gave all of himself to Mr Incredible, just got him to reject him.
It’s also amazing to me how much Buddy’s suit is a reflection of himself. Everything from the black and white color scheme representing his black and white way of thinking, to the huge S because here only thinks of himself.
Bob’s suit, however, is blue. In addition to being associated with a calming and rational thought process, I think it’s also to represent that he’s on the side of the police. He’s not here for his own glory, he’s essentially working as an extension of the police force
Also, let’s not forget when Bob is catching Bomb Voyage and trying to keep Buddy from yeeting himself towards almost certain death, he’s on his way to his own wedding.
That makes two things abundantly clear:
Bob doesn’t have an aversion to working with other people. Remember when he runs into Elastigirl earlier in the day? She reminds him not to “forget”, and he promises he won’t. They were standing over a thief they ended up accidentally nabbing together, or so we thought. They bantered back and forth about working alone, yet they nabbed that thief so seamlessly, you’d think they’d done it before. Then you find out later, Elastigirl is the woman at the altar. Making it clear that they had to have worked together, very frequently, enough to end up trusting each other to the point that they revealed their secret identities and had a romantic relationship outside of Super work, culminating in literally marrying each other. Bob is more than fine with a partner because he married his.
The other is that, Bob is trying to protect Helen. She may be more than capable of handling herself, as she flirtatiously reminds Bob on the rooftop just hours before their nuptials. But the one thing that’s priceless to the Supers are their secret identities. With Syndrome following Bob begging to partner with him, it puts Helen in danger. A fanatical fan like that can end up possessive, meaning once Syndrome discovers her, could see her as a direct threat stealing “his” position working with Bob. And because he obviously has a knack for following people undetected (he was right on Bob’s heels all over a huge metropolitan city for literal hours), he could very well stalk Helen, discover her secret identity and expose her in order to eliminate her, putting her directly in danger. Bob isn’t an idiot, he knows working with this kid doesn’t just put this child in danger, but also his own wife and their identities. It’s better to say he works alone and let this kid down as gently as possible, hoping to finally shake him off for good so he can work in safety and peace.
Which leads me to my next point. Blaming Bob for all his friends getting killed is buying directly into Syndrome’s revisionist history of Bob “rejecting” him. Remember, if Syndrome hadn’t shown up to Mr. Incredible busting Bomb Voyage, none of the ensuing chaos with the bomb on the rocket boots getting dropped on the train tracks and blowing them up, causing Bob to lose Bomb Voyage, then forced to stop a speeding train, resulting in the passengers getting injured, the attempted suicide being thwarted which injured the guy, and everybody suing Bob for it, ultimately culminating in the Super’s fall from public grace and forced retirement. All of those consequences are because Syndrome refused to listen to Bob and meddled in dangerous affairs, making everything indescribably worse. If he had never showed up, none of the above would have happened and Supers would have never been forced into retirement, meaning none of Bob’s friends would have been lured from said retirement by Mirage and Syndrome’s private contract offers which resulted in their deaths.
this post got SO much longer AND better
Not sure if this matters by now but
A couple of things:
- The reason Syndrome found all the other supers first (including Frozone) was because Bob kept getting fired from his jobs, forcing the government to wipe his existence from multiple companies and forcing his family to move each time that happened. He unintentionally saved his family by forcing them to relocate so often.
- Two of the biggest differences between the two versions of “go home, Buddy” is the focus, and length. In Mr Incredible’s version, “Go Home, Buddy” is a midpoint, a random event that just happened to stick because it was weirdly specific, and it was right before the important parts. The attempted suicide, train crash, and wedding are much more important because those were more important to Mr Incredible (since the first two ended the superhero movement, and the last was his wedding). Buddy, on the other hand, only flashes back to “Go home, Buddy”. Which is weird because Buddy almost died later that night from a bomb on his cape, and he almost killed dozens of people on a train by dropping a bomb on them, and because of that, he was indirectly responsible for the death of supers. All three of those things should be much more important to Buddy, but it’s a sign of his psychosis that the one thing he remembers is not Mr Incredible saving his life, or his life being in danger, but instead Mr Incredible rejecting him. Buddy was unstable, and an extremely unreliable narrator who edited out massive chunks of his own story to better justify his hero syndrome.
- Also, on a more sobering note, some have brought up how Incredibles 2 seems a step down from Incredibles 1, and while that’s arguable, there’s some related bits in there I’d like to mention. You know how there were a slew of superhero’s in the movie for when they made superhero-ing legal again?
Notice anything funny about that lineup? Anything at all? Okay, here’s a hint then. How many of these heroes were working before heroes got banned? How many of these new heroes are from Mr Incredible’s era?
Answer: None.
Frozone, Elastigirl, and Mr Incredible are the only ones who were active before the ban, or more specifically, were left from those active before the ban.
Think about it, Elastigirl was on the news basically continuously, there was a UN declaration on supers, any super left who had even been five degrees of separation away from Elastigirl back in their heyday would’ve come up to talk to her and her movement. But when Elastigirl was brought in to meet other supers, she didn’t know any of them.
And it’s not like she and Bob were loners who never interacted with anyone, look at their wedding day, it’s packed to the gills with capes (and possibly some secret identities too):
So…what happened?
Syndrome happened. This isn’t just some serial killer picking people at random, Syndrome systematically wiped out an entire community of people, arguably, an entire generation of supers, since Violet, Dash, and Jack-Jack seem to be the only kid-supers in existence.
That’s why Elastigirl is so emotional when she’s introduced to these new supers, she thought her people, barring her family and Frozone, were wiped out by Syndrome. And in a way…they were.
Nobody’s left from her era of superheroics. None of her old friends survived. It’s just her, Bob, and Frozone left out of what was once a thriving, vibrant community. All those bright lights snuffed out because some kid couldn’t handle being rejected but his hero.
- Honestly, this allegory kind of brings to mind the AIDS crisis and the gay community. A “syndrome” almost specifically targeting a subset of the population with a flair for dramatic outfits and superheroics, picking off members one by one until the population is decimated. The members of the community have to intervene themselves to slow/stop this “syndrome” because the government, which was supposed to protect them, is unaware of, or is blatantly ignoring the crisis until it starts hurting the “normal” community. Because of this “syndrome” there’s just this gap in this community, where an entire generation is just…missing…with the few survivors having to counsel the new, untouched generation, and helping them achieve widespread support and acceptance they could only dream of.
- Side note: I just realized something. Take a look at Syndrome’s kill list:
And take a look at that wedding shot again.
Anyone look familiar?
If it’s to hard to tell, at least four of the people Syndrome killed were at Bob’s wedding.
Mr Incredible wasn’t watching supers getting killed, he was watching his friends getting killed. People he trusted enough to share his secret identity with people he trusted enough to share his wife’s secret identity with. Hell, our poor boy Gazerbeam got a front row seat with Edna and their NSA agent that’s usually reserved for family only.
And that’s bad enough, but something else occurred to me, Bob and Helen clearly haven’t been keeping in close contact with their superheroic friends, Bob asks Frozone if he’s been keeping in contact with Gazerbeam, implying they haven’t talked in a while.
Additionally, Bob’s life, and the superhero community’s life, went tits up basically immediately after his wedding night. So if there was any point for them to stop talking with other supers, it’d be then.
So what does that mean?
It means, in all likelihood that when Mr Incredible looked at that list of dead friends and superheroes, he realized with growing horror that, his wedding?
The happiest point of his life?
That was the last time Mr Incredible saw his friends alive.
Also like to point out that in the scene where he’s seeing all of his friend’s and their identities exposed and that they’ve been killed, he IMMEDIATELY in shock and horror realizes that elastagirl could be a target and SEARCHES her super identity. The relief on his face when he sees that she’s unknown is honestly so raw. Incredibles, both of them, are just absolutely stunning films.
*blinks* I…need to rewatch this movie. I think I missed out on uh, just a few things when I was like 12.

Welcome to the graveyard. Everyone who touches this post deactivates
If I deactivate after reblogging this post, I want everyone to know that I died with honor
i just had the weirdest moment, i was feeling my front teeth with my tongue because they’re the tiniest bit crooked, and then i had the thought “i’ll check if they’re also crooked in my other mouth” and then i realized to my shock and confusion that i have only one mouth, leading me to believe that in a past life i was a terrible monster with two mouths
A few months ago, I thought to myself “Mmm I’m so tired… how much longer in this one again?” and I knew instinctively what I meant by ‘this one’ was this body and this life. I then spend a few wide-eyed moments having an identity/existential crisis like how many times have I been on this earth to have such an instinctive response to being bone-weary to my soul? No one can really answer, especially not me.
In July 2017, one night I woke up around 2 a.m and blurted out in a quasi professorial voice “the Equinox Bird has infinite beaks, all in the wrong direction, and infinite eyes” and I don’t know what the fuck I was dreaming about but it still haunts me. It seemed like a very important information for a few seconds.
i really appreciate the last commenter giving us an exact date and time like that information needs to be preserved
One time I passed out on the couch after going a few days without sleep, and when I woke up mom said I had been speaking in German in my sleep, and it sounded like I was ordering people to build something
When I was like 5 my mom took me to the grave of her friend that died of cancer and I asked what happened and my mom explained that she died and i fucking said “I died once” and my mom asked me to explain and I went into pretty detailed explanation about how I died in a war because “I got stabbed by a gun with a knife at the end” (my exact words) and I met god and she (she’s a woman obvs) asked if I wanted to stay or go back to earth and I said I wanted to go back so I chose my mom cause she was struggling to have a baby (she had me through IVF) and lemme tell you that changed her like nothing will make you second guess your religious beliefs like a five year old explaining heaven and god to you
this post is a fucking ride and it reminded me of something i forgot
one time i was playing on my wii (like 5-ish years ago) and i thought to myself “i haven’t checked on rowan in a week, has he died from the plague? :(“ and i didn’t think anything of it for a bit until later when i had a “what the fuck” moment
I love this kind of shit because it happens to me all the goddamn time. Like:
-The other night I rolled over in the middle of the night to shake my partner awake, proceeded to tell him how I was glad that ‘this time round we would truly have the freedom to love each other properly’ and how his hands belonged to his last self, but his eyes had never changed in all the lives I’d known him. And he just laid there in the dark like wtf because I was asleep. Like I’d woken him to tell him that all in my sleep and then left him to have a crisis.
- Watching the history channel with my Pop on the couch, tender age of 7, and they’re talking about crucifixion. And my pop, ever the funny man, is like “that looks like it aughta hurt”. And I just turn to look at him and without hesitation reply “only at first”. And he’s like “what do you mean” and tiny me just shrugged and said “well there’s a place beyond the hurt where everything just stops” and he turned the telly off and left the room.
- night before Christmas 2012, dreamt I’d been stabbed in the lungs by an angel with the face of a falcon. He looked at me and told me he had to do it, so that ‘my next breath would come as a rebirth’. When he started to glow so brightly that it burned my eyes, I woke up to all the lights in my house on and a dark bruise beneath my rib cage. Will admit, that one freaked me out.
- walked past a graveyard with a friend back in middle school on the way to her house, and mid conversation I stopped talking and stood stock still, looked over at the walls, and quietly said “I have a friend in there”. Then picked up the conversation and continued strolling like nothing had happened. To be fair, I didn’t realise what I’d said. She still tells me I’m the reason she can’t walk past that graveyard anymore.
- a couple of years ago when I was in Wales I walked past an old stone house just outside of Aberystwyth, and just started to weep. I had the overwhelming thought that I needed to be in there to get dinner ready for the children, but in a different life so long ago and so impossible to reach, that thefeeling of loss was instant and overwhelming.
- was about to use a pedestrian crossing, when my whole body just sort of went hey don’t do that, and so I stopped and put my arm out to stop the woman who was crossing behind me, and 2 seconds later a car came skidding around the corner and crashed into the tree on the other side of the crossing, and I just whispered “ha, not this time” and didn’t really think about it until later when I realised I’d nearly died again. (Btw i waited for th ambulance to show up and the dude driving the car was fine, just hit his head and was drunk af at 10:30am on a Thursday).
- another dream I had just this week, I was sitting in an otherwise empty cinema with a tall, thin man. I can’t really recall what he looked like, except he was well dressed, impossibly pale, and he kind of blurred when you looked directly at him, so I mainly watched him out the corner of my eye and looked ahead at the blank movie screen. He was holding my hand, and he asked me if i enjoyed my life. I said yes and explained why. He then said, almost verbatim, “And how does this one weigh against the last? Can it tip the scales, or is it, at last, to be found lacking?” And I replied, almost verbatim “I weigh my lives against my joy, and each life I find there is more joy to be discovered.” He replied with a laugh, lifted my hand to a kiss and said “till next time then” and disappeared. I woke up in the dark with both my cats sitting on me, alert, and staring out my bedroom door.
So many more, but these are the first that come to mind.
When I was little, my mother, my sister and I would dream in unison so often that one time when my mother was having a rather dull dream about golf my tiny 3 year old self shook her awake and told her to stop because it was boring. She dreaded having nightmares because both of us would wake up shrieking.
My sister and I have also been known to argue in our sleep. Witnesses assure us that whatever made the shouting start, we both knew what it was and were mad about it. We don’t need to be in the same room for this.
We also stayed in a haunted house for a while. An old lady had fallen in the chilly hallway just outside the warm kitchen, broken her hip, and couldn’t reach high enough to open the door, so she died of hypothermia a foot away from a telephone and warmth. Without fail, every person who stood in that spot and tried to open that door - the single most used door in the house, being between the kitchen and the bathroom and front door - felt cold and found themselves scrabbling frantically at the door handle, which was always strangely hard to open from that side. You got used to it to an extent, but it always hit strangers hard.
warning for long post ahead
As a some people asked me on Twitter for writing purpose, I thought I’d share this with you all too.
The Japanese school system is slightly different from the western one but has some thing in common with the European one.
The first thing to know about the Japanese schooling system is that the school year starts in APRIL and ends in MARCH. Everything in Japan “starts” anew in April, and even companies ends their year in March. This is extremely important because the start of spring scans the start of the new working and academic year.
Generally the students have around two weeks of vacation between the end of the academic year and the start of the new called “spring vacation” (春休み). They also have generally a week off during Golden Week in May, around two to three weeks of vacation in August (お盆休み) and around ten days between December and January. That’s all about their school vacations for the year.
The first day of school they have the entrance ceremony, something that might be well-known to Americans but not to Europeans as most schools don’t have entrance ceremony.
The biggest difference is that their elementary school years are 6 and the university years are 4 instead of 3 (in Europe).
There are also a lot of vocational schools (専門学校) that are generally private and can be either high school-like or college-like. They are typically 2-to-4 years long.
Japanese education is compulsory until middle school but 99.9% of Japanese people go up to the upper secondary level of education.
Both public and private education are present in Japan, but while until middle school generally kids go to public schools, private schools and college are famous for high school and university.
School in Japan starts at 9 am and ends at 3 pm with one hour for lunch around 12 pm. They go from Monday to Friday. In some private schools, they also go on Saturday and their school day ends at 12 pm. They have around 30 min of ‘homeroom-ing’ where they talk about activities, school festivals and others. After school hours, students clean their own classroom in turns. In elementary school often they serve lunch at school and students are required to manage the lunch serving in turns. After the end of lessons, most students go to club activities or crams school, the few ones who don’t, go out or return home.
The toughest part of the Japanese schooling system (and the reason of most stress, suicide, mental health problems and bullism) are entrance exams. Generally Japanese kids have high pressure from their parents to get into a good school as the society values the name of the school more than academic success (you’ll see why in the University Section).
Generally the toughest years for Japanese students are the high school ones (and the last year of middle school if they are trying to get into a good private high school).
The entrance admission exams go from October to February depending on the school and depending on the school they’re trying to get into.
This is why 3rd years are “forced” to quit their clubs after summer and study for the entrance exams, especially if they are in high school. So the summer tournaments are the last ones where they can participate.
Something widespread in American schools but not much in European schools are school clubs. There are a various range of clubs depending of the school. Most secondary level schools value their sports clubs very much if they win in leagues because they make the school famous. It’s very important if the school doesn’t have any academic prestigious (that is, the chances of being able to enroll into a top-tier university) and the pressure the club members sometimes get into keeping a name in high school sports leagues is extremely high.
Clubs generally needs to have from 4 to 10 joining members and an adviser teacher to exist. If not, they get closed.
Often sports club have training before lessons (from 6am to 8am) especially during tournaments, and during these periods they also often have practice during school lunch hours. But generally clubs activities starts after the end of lessons at 3pm until 6pm. Schools with dormitories for sports club members often have their practice until 11pm, especially before and during tournaments.
The biggest part of Japanese schooling that also reflects the Japanese culture is their seniority system. The senpai-kohai relationship are extremely important and the ones who don’t respect this system are either: expelled from clubs, get disciplinary reports or get isolated from the rest of the class.
Of course it also depends from school to school. The more renowned the school is the more the rules are strict.
It’s very rare that a underclassman talks casually to a upperclassman and it’s important to always use honorifics (they don’t exist in English so there is no problem when writing), it’s mostly the “way of talking” (words, expressions, the ‘desu-masu’ form etc.) that makes the difference and even the biggest hotheads generally respect the seniority system. Even if you become close friend with a upperclassman unless you mutually agree to tone down the level of politeness you are required to speak formally to them. This is something that cannot be conveyed in english 100% so my advice it’s not not make the underclassman using slang expressions and swearing words if they are talking to a upperclassman unless they already do that in canon.
Contrary to the American system the Japanese students don’t change classes during periods. They are always in the same class with the same classmates and they move only for gym and home ed periods.
It’s also rare albeit not impossible to find students repeating a year.
The students (male and female) take turns to change in the classroom into gym clothes if they don’t have locker rooms (which is usually the case because more than one class has gym class in the same period. Locker rooms are mostly used by sports club members).
The students might change class when the new school year starts because class members get assigned randomly at every start of the academic year.
Generally, as I said that even for companies the year starts in April, it’s very rare that a transfer student gets transferred in another moment of the year (it’s mostly and anime-like thing lol).
I’d say 90% of Japanese schools use uniforms. There are cases where public elementary schools don’t use uniforms but I’m almost sure is compulsory for the second level education. Generally the uniforms are divided in western style and sailor style for girls and western style and gakuran for boys.
Rules for Uniforms They depend from school to school, and usually the more prestigious is a (generally private) school the more strict the rules are going to be. For girls, there are cases where for their uniforms, they have to wear their skirt not up their knees, they are required to use the bows, under-the-knee socks and often they also need to have their hair styled in a certain way (ponytail, braids, other), cannot use any make up and cannot have their ears pierced. There are some even more strict schools that requires that all the students -the foreigner ones too- dye their hair black.
For males, the strict schools requires them to have their shirt buttoned up and tie tight tied if they have western-style uniforms and their gakuran buttoned up if they have gakuran. They cannot dye their hair, cannot have them any longer than a certain cm and cannot pierce their ears. In summer, the schools that have gakuran as uniform let the students have a short-sleeve shirt usually without any tie. Gakuran have the school’s symbol embodied in the buttons and often on the collar they have pins that represents the school year and some times the class rank (eg. class rep)
Public schools are more loose with rules, especially with the western style uniforms. Often in winter the students can choose the sweater they’d like (generally suggested by the school) to wear or the kind of socks they’d like, and they usually let the students dye their hair and have their ears pierced. But depending from school to school, the ‘how much’ you can dye your hair and ‘how much’ you can have your ears pierced can vary.
Uniforms are important because they become part of people’s school lives, and are nostalgic for adults. Young people in uniform are a symbol of ‘youth’ and ‘carefree-ness’, of a time that passed and that contains sentimental memories.
Something again that is also in American schools but not often in European ones is the student council. Generally in anime the student council is a sort of god-like presence that has the same, if not more, power than the principal, they have access to any kind of budget and can do whatever they like. In reality, it’s not like that. While the student council committee often has words into managing the clubs and the budget, school trips and such, because the student council is a chance the school gives the students to ‘govern’ themselves to a certain extent to let them experience how democracy should work, they have not as much power as the exaggerating anime and manga tends to give. Generally the ones elected for the student council are the more popular ones, and when I say more popular ones I mean the most academically achieving student, which is the most important thing in japanese schools. Popular students are often not popular for their external appearance but more for their academic or athletic achievements that brings prestige to the school.
High School in Japan is said to be one of the most difficult periods of their lives because they have to prepare for the university entrance exams. As I said before, especially for students in private (but even public) schools who aim to enter important universities, the pressure is high and cause of extreme competitiveness and bullism between the students. Both private and public high school are not free. Of course private schools are more expensive but even for public ones the yearly price goes around 300,000 yen (around 3000$). The uniforms are also very expensive, and they might cost between 200 and 1000$. This is why often poorer families buys bigger uniforms hoping that their children would ‘grow up to fit’ it in their third year.
Generally High Schools have two kind of courses that are the college-preparatory classes and the vocational classes. The first ones aim to train the student to pass the college entrance exams while the second ones are for the students who are expecting to find a job right after graduation. There are schools where depending the class you are in, the more high your academic success is. (Eg, often being in the 3-A class means you’re part of the best students of the school, while being in the 3-B means you are also very good, but not as good as the first ones. It’s not always like this and it depends from school to school.) It IS possible to change from the vocational course to the college-preparatory course but integrating the lacking parts is often difficult and nerve-wracking (though not impossible).
University in Japan is far different from Europe and America. In fact, university years are often called ‘college summer vacations’. While they almost give up their mental and physical health to be able to enroll in the top universities, once you are able get in you generally do nothing. They don’t have any kind of oral exams, their written exams are often multiple choice ones, the evaluations are mostly based on group presentations and works and they don’t have much pressure as they know they are going to graduate in march of their fourth year anyway. The only thing required to fully graduate is attendance. In one year you have only 3 days of permit and they require you to come unless you’re basically so sick you gotta go to hospital. This varies from college to college but it’s generally the same. Students go there and literally sleep on desks (in fact, often assistants go around the class waking up students)
Students in University
The cost of University in Japan is around 1 million yen per year (around 10000$) and to pay for it most students either work a part time job or enroll in the japanese scholarship association. Assistance is also offered by local governments, nonprofit corporations, and other institutions.
The top university in Japan is the Todai (Tokyo Daigaku) which is considered one of the best university in Asia. It’s ranked 1st in Japan and 5th in Asia, and around the 20-25th in the world. It’s a public university but it’s been said to have one of the most difficult entrance exam of universities in Japan. Who manages to get into Todai has a shining employment future ahead of them. Other top-tier universities include Kyoto Daigaku, Osaka Daigaku, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Nagoya Daigaku and more.
To be able to get into top-tier universities usually high schoolers go to cram schools (Juku) after their normal school hours. Often, the teachers in cram schools are currently top students at good universities. The ones who cannot get into the school of their choice on the first try become ‘ronin’ (which literally means samurai without master), this happens if they decide to not enroll in any of their other choices but aim to get in that one university they failed to get in. Usually they take one year off after high school graduation to concentrate on studies and pass their top-choice university entrance exams.
Generally, university students starts to search for a job between their third and fourth year of university, and, generally, they get hired before they even graduate. They will start their job as soon as they graduate (that’s why also the working year starts in april, even though it’s not rare to get into a company in other moments of the year) and 99% of university graduates is said to find a job once they graduate. I’d have to say, it depends a lot on the student’s university name since as I said before, the employers valuate more the university name than anything since university students basically don’t have any academic merit in general and their degree mark is not even listed in their resume.
They often have clubs also in university and there are some private universities that requires uniforms, but they are rare.
1. Japanese houses are small. Very small. Even if you are rich, your house is small. Especially if you live in Tokyo.
2. Usually college students are off-site, they live in small apartments or in share houses. The only share houses I know that host parties are the ones for foreigners and are always fully controlled by the house agency and they end at 11pm.
3. Japanese people are not that kind of social animals who like to go wild in parties in a house. The house is a sacred territory where things like parties don’t happen. They drink and have fun outside (usually at izakaya restaurants or karaoke) but never in their houses, especially if it’s the family house. In fact, it’s very rare to get invited at a Japanese’s house. If they want to study with friends, they study in cafes or libraries, if they want to have sex often they go to hotels unless one of the two lives alone.
4. Japanese houses are not the same as american single-family houses, they are narrow and full of things.
Another important thing is that underage drinking is way less widespread than one might think. Drinking is part of japanese culture and it’s considered a step into adulthood (you can start drinking at 20), so japanese people value very much this important moment and they don’t rush it by drinking underage (there are exceptions of course). Drinking in japan is important: as soon as you turn 20, you are able to ‘join’ the adults drinking in izakaya, restaurants and karaoke, you can go to your friends and/or company ‘飲み会’ (lit. drinking parties) and often you are even forced to drink even if you don’t want. Often you cannot decline your superiors asking you to go drinking with them and you have to drink if they fill your glass. It’s considered rude refusing because of the seniority system and because of the importance of the drinking culture. In fact, I had to learn in school how to ‘politely decline’ a drink and find a way to say the reason why I declined in the most polite way possible in order to not offend my superior. It’s ordinary to see salaryman/woman and generally working people passed out in their own vomit on friday nights. Nobody considers this inappropriate because that is just ‘what they do’. It’s their culture and they just think ‘ah, they probably spent a good time with their co-workers’. I have to say that often police has to run around picking up these lifeless bodies all night and bring them home and I’d say not every wife loves to see their husband come home stoned and covered in vomit but hey.
If you read manga or watch anime that are set in school, you would often see these ‘school festivals’ and ‘activities’ that are integral part of Japanese school live. Let’s see what they are.
The cultural festival is one of the most important days in the school year, because it’s when students can often show the results of their artistic and cultural achievements and often former students get to visit their old school again. The activities done during the cultural festival are planned at least one month before and the students work on it usually during their club hours and sometimes during lesson hours. There are usually concerts, dance sessions, plays, art displays etc. and most classes get turned into cafes and themed cafes, little restaurants and other little activities (such as horror houses and such) where the students can display their creativity and management skills. Usually the culture festival is held on Culture day (November the 3rd) which his a national holiday in Japan. It might also be held in the Saturday and Sunday close to this day. Often students use this opportunity to visit other schools, especially if they are planning to get into them.
Sports Day is on the second monday of October and it’s a great chance to polish the students’ cooperativeness and enhance their physical and mental health through exercise. Generally they are divided by class and do a various range of physical activities such as baton-pass races, three-legged race, soccer, volleyball and such. This day was established to commemorate the olympic games of 1964, that were held in october because summer is the heavy rainy season (梅雨) in Japan.
While they often are done mostly during elementary and middle school, there are a lot of high schools who also plan school trips. They are part of the school’s activities and are usually one twice a year, in spring and fall. Usually in their last year of school in every grade they experience overnight school trips. They visit naturally and culturally important place such as Nara, Hiroshima, Kyoto, Okinawa, all depending where the school is, or often they take one-day trip to visit factories and show kids how the adults work.
Often during summer the school organizes a overnight camp over the sea or on the mountains. This is generally something that mostly elementary and middle schoolers do. They are in contact with nature and learn various things about the species living in the surrounding area.
Often sports club organize overnight camps or summer camps especially close or during tournaments. These are a chance to make the members get close with their teammates, concentrating only on training and work on special-menu training to enhance their physical and mental health in view of the upcoming tournaments. Overnight camps are a 1-to-3 days full immersion where the members sleep all together in the school’s gym/facility while summer camps are either done over the sea or in the mountains or joined with other schools’ same sports club, to give a chance to the members to experience training with different students and enhance their sportsmanship.
There are some schools that give their students a chance to live in dormitories if they have. Generally it’s either if they are part of a (school with a famous) sports club or if the school is rich and private and difficult to get to with transportation. There are also a good number of universities that give their students the chance of stay in dormitories, this applies often to foreigner and exchange students.
Dormitories are often cleaned by the students themselves (though it depends from school to school) and they have a communal area where often they have a canteen and a relax area. Sneaking into a school dorm at night is almost impossible as there are guards but generally since most dormitories don’t have single rooms and in japan the act of ‘bothering others’ is seen as one of the most rude things that can ever be done, almost no one tries to break the rules.
Generally if someone disrupts the dormitory life gets immediately chased out after a few warnings.
I probably forgot something so if you have any questions about a specific theme, you can message me!! Thank you for reading until the end! (*´ω`)

For all you fanfic writers out there.
So many people on tumblr complain about having no friends but then they reblog shit like
“If your friend doesn’t respond to your every text immediately they are not your friend”
and “A true friend would never value themselves over your sanity. Friends who ‘need space’ away from your mental health issue are TO X I C” and “if someone doesn’t drop everything to help you when you’re in need, congrats, you just found out who your fake friend is”
and it’s like…this is why.
You had friends and then shat on them with your fucked up abusive standards.
congratulations on shutting down every mentally ill person who NEEDS this kind of attention to survive and telling us we dont deserve friends for the way our brains fuck us up and tell us that if they dont do just the smallest things they hate us and wantus to die and dont want to be our friends i hate nts
You’re friends world doesn’t revolve around you. Honestly your response is one of the most selfish things I’ve read.
You need to realize that your mental illness can be toxic and harmful to your friends, that it can be controlling and poisonous. That your friends world doesn’t just revolve around you.
I had a friend like that once. She had her mental instabilities and she suffered from depression and things like that and so she came to me because I was her friend. I tried to be THAT friend. Whenever she would text or call me, I would be there to to talk to her, to give her advice no matter how busy i was, and i was BUSY. I genuinely wanted to help her through her problems and i felt guilty for wanting to put my academics over her. But in school she would often complain that she had absolutely no friends, as if I didn’t exist. I tried to understand though, that sometimes it may FEEL like you don’t have anyone I suppose, so I stuck with her so she wouldn’t feel alone. I wish I saw it then, but it was just tip of the iceberg. She was manipulating me. She would tell me secrets, and make me promise to never tell another soul. And I didn’t, cause I cared. Come to find out she went and told the whole school herself, saying the same thing to each person “promise not to tell anyone, you’re the only one I can trust”. I would tell her to go seek professional help because she was hurting herself and getting into all sorts of trouble. But she would say the same thing “I can’t, you’re the only one I can trust.” Almost every night we would talk over Facebook and she would constantly reaffirm our friendship, saying “you’re my friend, right?” almost the same way, every day, and I would always say the same thing “yes”. This went on for about 2 years. It got to the point that I would hide my online status on facebook when I saw that she was online. I was going through hardships of my own and when I would go to her about it, she would quickly dismiss it and go on about HER problems. She would come to me with her problems, I would tell her how to solve them, she would totally disregard everything I told her and get herself into trouble again, and come crying to me for the same answers to the same problems and repeat the cycle over and over again. I would be up at midnight writing college essays, filling out college applications, looking for scholarships, and she would call me complaining about the same problems that I had given her the solutions to countless times. But I would drop everything and go through the whole spiel again, because I tried to be THAT friend. The friend that those people want. The one that would put their whole life on halt for their friends. And it did a toll on me, both physically and mentally. I got no sleep or mental rest because I was basically juggling her problems, on top of my own, as well as school preparing for college. Every time she sensed I was sort of backing out she would bring up the fact that she would kill herself or that I was the one and only friend she had (which wasn’t true). It was my mom who finally told me to distance myself from her, because she could see how badly this kind of relationship was affecting me, and she had been in a similar one herself, so she recognized the signs. My dad, a Star Trek fan, called people like that Klingons because they literally cling on to you and feed off of the attention you give them. I’m not knocking people with mental disabilities or depression or anything like that, because they are serious. But don’t treat your friends like your 24/7 therapists or psychiatrists. We cannot put our whole lives on hold, jeopardize our future for you. Even therapists tell their patients “no I can’t speak with you today” or “you have to schedule an appointment, you can’t just call whenever you want”. And it’s not to be selfish. I thought it was selfish of me to prioritize my health or education over my friend who needed my help. But I realized, I’m not a therapist, and I have to look out for myself too.
I hit a point for a lot of folks where I have to go “I can’t help you with that. You need to speak with a professional.” Sometimes it takes time to convince them to go but it usually helps them. Yes, there are mental illnesses that can manifest symptoms that are these things but that doesn’t mean you embrace them and accept them as okay behaviors. They’re abusive behaviors. And you have to learn how to manage them and not let those feelings jerk you around. And before one of you comes back with a catty “lol neurotypicals” I’ve got an anxiety disorder and it took me literally up until last year to get help for it and there were times I was abusive and my fiance is fantastic because he shut that shit down fast and helped me to rationalize what I was feeling and learn better ways to cope. It was work. It wasn’t a cake walk. But I’m a better person for it and I feel better for it and it helped me stay stable until I could get therapy and medication to get more stable. Your friends have lives and are people. You are not the centerpoint for them. There’s a really good quote that goes “mental illness has a really sinister way of making it all about YOU” like say, with anxiety, you go to a store and feel like everyone is staring at you or judging you when in reality it’s just people shopping. They probably don’t even notice you. You hear friends talking about someone but not specifically so you think it must be you and it must be bad. It blows. For me, I would stop myself when I had those thoughts, pause and remind myself “There’s a good chance this isn’t about you. There’s a good chance friend is just busy. Does that suck? Yeah, but it’s not their fault. They have shit to do. Let’s find something to occupy our time until they get back to us.” then I’d go play a game or something. Learning skills like that will improve your relationships with others because you’re not only focused on you.
mental illness is not an excuse to be abusive.
