THE BATMAN 2021 – Matt Reeves
Things We Learned about The Batman:
- It’s likely set sometime in the 90’s but after the year 1991 based on the trailer song. Update: it appears to be set in modern day but I’m pretty sure Bruce was a 90’s kid
- It is NOT an origin story
- It’s sort of an origin story for the Rouges Gallery
- Selena Kyle is not Catwomen yet but it sounds like she evolves into Catwomen over the course of the movie
- It features a lot of Bruce’s psychology espeically in terms of his “shadow side” and the divide between Bruce Wayne and Batman
- It heavily focuses on his status as the World’s Greatest Detective
- It takes place in his 2nd year as Batman
- The public fears Batman and some people are not sure he exists
- Bruce isn’t perfect and he makes mistakes which will he shown through his actions, their outcomes, and by marks and scuffs on the Batsuit
- Bruce built both the Batmobile and the Batsuit himself
- It features his humanity
- Batman isn’t making the impact on Gotham Bruce wants so he learns how to change things the way he wants them to be
- The Penguin doesn’t like to be called the Penguin, at least in the beginning
- The Riddler has just become the Riddler and its supposed to be different from anything we’ve seen yet
- Matt Reeves drew inspiration from films such as Chinatown and Taxi Driver along with other 70’s street-based films
- It heavily focuses on the corruption of the GCPD and the cops
- Bruce wears the black eye makeup underneath the cowl
- Things really start to pick up when Batman investigates a series of murders and that is part of what makes him realize how to change Gotham
- Gotham is supposed to be unlike any city we’re ever seen. Scenes with Gotham were filmed in Liverpool for the Gothic architecture but modern buildings will be added in using CGI
- Batman aids the police and works with Gordon
- Matt described Bruce as “broken”
- The way the trailer is cut (and based on the filming locations) it looks like the entrance to the Batcave might be through the cemetery
These are just things I picked up from watching the trailer and the panel but once I can breakdown the trailer further, I’ll post more. You can find my updated frame by frame breakdown with details and theories here.

The Batman (2021)
(Casting/Speculation/Wishlist Pt. 3/???)
First, let's talk about the name. Nashton. This was the original last name of The Riddler before it was changed to E. Nygma/Nigma in the comics. The Batman '66 version of The Riddler was named Nashton as well. So while some may complain that this is a "departure from previous iterations," Matt Reeves is actually paying attention to the source material.
Now, the character has usually been portrayed as man obsessed with being the smartest person in the room who just so happens to make Batman solve riddles to stop jewel heists...(foregoing the animated Hush adaption, smh 🙄) there have been rumors as far back as the Nolan days of them doing a serious take (read: not Jim Carrey) of The Riddler.
I remember rumors of Johnny Depp being cast as a version of Riddler that was more akin to Jigsaw from the Saw franchise or Kevin Spacey in Se7en than a riddle-obsessed jewel thief. While they may still take a serious approach like that, I doubt/hope it won't be of the Jigsaw variety....I would hope they would save that kind of twisted for someone like Hush/Joker/Professor Pyg...etc...
Now if it were up to me, I'd do something fresh: Nashton is a military E.O.D. specialist who studies and inadvertently becomes obsessed with riddles due to TBI sustained in battle, comes home a wounded veteran, he fails as a S.W.A.T. Cybercrime-specialist (due to hacking people's computers in order to prevent crimes from happening or something 🤷♂️) and then becomes obsessed with Batman's identity (pissed that Batman can violate the Patriot Act and spy but he can't) and becomes a domestic terrorist/serial-killer who's obsessed with outsmarting Batman to tear him down...well that might work...
When it comes to the look, I think it's a no brainier here to go with either the Earth-One look or the War of Jokes and Riddles look. Say what you will about that story, but Paul looks very close to this version of Riddler. I doubt we're going to have a Shredded™ version of Riddler anyway, or even one who walks around with his shirt unbuttoned for that matter.
But hey, the trench coat is cool...just lose the question mark tattoos/scars. Don't need a repeat of Edgy Joker™ from Suicide Squad...
where’s the submarine? …….we have to build it.
