Finished this today for day....7? Of #hrc100days! The bark cracked during staining so I had to gently work it off then oil the whole thing after the stain dried. I still like how it looks but I had burned the bark so I lost that work. Flax is a plant that is naturally processed in various ways then spun to create linen. A common material used by the Vikings. Spindles have different symbolism depending on what culture you are looking at it from. Some include: transformation, creating life, fertility, threads of life (circle of life in a sense), virility, skill, industriousness, etc. The distaff can symbolize domestic life, transformation, climbing of the celestial pole, containment of creative energies, possibility and sometimes is connected to phallic symbolism but is more often associated with female energies. The word also came to mean the female side of one's family. Spinning and the use of a distaff occurs in many cultures and most have their own deity connected to it. I am literally crying with joy. I have been searching for a proper Norse distaff for so long and the lady who makes these just started production again right when I had the funds available. They are both made from recycled hardwoods and are based off of a circa 843 CE find in the Oseberg Viking ship. These will be used for both practical and devotional purposes. This weekend my little family went to our first Fiber Arts Festival! We found out about it too late to take any classes but we got to visit the marketplace!
