Chainmaille (or chainmail, maille, etc) was first used as armor and the rings were "woven" together to form a mesh covering that hopefully would protect one in battle. The earliest known piece of chainmaille we know of belonged to a Celtic chieftain and was found in his burial site in Romania. The craft is perhaps much older than this however.
