Tonight, Yule starts for our family and many others. While we participate in other Winter themed celebrations before tonight, Mothers Night is when Yule really begins for us. Mothers Night is the start of the New Year and is focused on the ancestral mothers and female spirits that are a part of one’s family or community, etc. These are called the Disir and our hope is that they watch over and protect us. Our family celebrated them by baking cookies from places our ancestors hailed, spending time in the snow together and shoveling sidewalks, etc to help our neighbors, finishing crafts before sundown and enjoying a hearty meal together inspired by a favorite meal my Mom (my kids Omi) made growing up.
Do you celebrate Mothers Night? What do you do to participate?
The prayer here was created by “Wyrd Dottir” and this blog has a lot of great information about Mothers Night, etc. I just created this pretty graphic.
