At least once a month I remember that Ozai ruled for ~3 years. That's shorter than one presidential term. That's nothing. In comparison Zuko - who suffered so much cruelty and was made to feel worthless under Ozai - ruled for ALMOST 70 YEARS. That's more than 22 times the length of Ozai's rule - and he will go down in history as one of the most influential and well loved Fire Lords of all time

Fire Nation children literally only learn about him because he was mean to Fire Lord Zuko, the Restorer, teacher of Avatar Aang, Father of Dragons, the Reason the Palace Turtleduck Pond Has That Century-Old "Do Not Feed" Sign

Other nation's kids don't even get a mention in their textbooks, the 100 Year War unit skips straight from Sozin "and his descendents" to Zuko

And that is a beautiful epilogue

Okay, but adult Zuko and his cranky-confused when-is-our-real-field-trip-starting teenage daughter working (barely) undercover at the Jasmine Dragon?

YES PLEASE.

Izumi finds a Blue Spirit mask on her pillow one evening and Knows What To Do. She doesn’t tell her dad because A) she’s a teenager sneaking out to fight crime and make friends with Smellerbee and Longshot’s children at night, and B) she just assumes her dad was the one who left it for her. Tacit permission with plausible deniability whenever their trying-so-hard-to-be-undercover body guards finally catch up with them.

She is incorrect. It is Iroh who left it.

“You did WHAT?” asks a frazzled Fire Lord/assistant tea shop manager. “She’s just a child, she can’t be out at all hours doing Agni-knows-what in a mask-”

“Oh my,” says Iroh, sipping tea, “what a horrible feeling, not knowing where your child is at night, or what trouble they may be getting into without you.”

Other items of note:

  • Longshot is Iroh’s assistant manager. He and ‘Bee started stalking the old general after the war, and Iroh offered them both jobs because “Surely you can watch me much better with kitchen access!” Smellerbee eventually got poached by Iroh’s ex to work at flowershop instead.
  • Smellerbee and Longshot’s children are adopted. One of them uses knives, one of them bows, and the third is a firebender. None of them are good with the hook swords their parents keep over the mantle.
  • Izumi is VERY good with the hook swords her friends’ parents keep over the mantle.
  • The Gaang gets in on things via Appa Tag. Oh no, Appa is lost in Ba Sing Se again, whoever can find him…
  • Druk is jealous and wants to play hide-and-seek too but he keeps forgetting that his tail is a part of his body, and leaves it hanging out doors, windows, from under King Kuei’s banquet table, etc.
  • Something something Crystal Catacombs scene with Jin’s daughter, co-starring Izumi’s bisexual awakening.

This is my Lu Ten and boy am I in love with him.

His Mother got sick when he was around 14, leaving him to deal with three cunning, demanding and harsh men on his own. His Father became colder by the day, like preparing himself for the loss of his wife, and it was always better not to cross his uncle Ozai.

Then Aunt Ursa married in, and the Palace got warmer again. She kept his Mother company, and both of them would put on performances to lift her mood sometimes. Even his Father thawed bit by bit, enjoying the company of all three of them. Two months after the wedding, Ozai left, again, to search for the Avatar. Two months after that, the Royal Healers announced Princess Ursa was expecting.

Unfortunately, his Mother never got to meet his baby cousin. She passed away in the night six weeks before the birth. Ozai had still not come back and Father was a wreck, so Lu Ten and Ursa were left alone to deal with their grief and the preparations for the child's arrival.

(Rumours sparked even back then, but Lu Ten was just excited to get a little cousin and payed no mind to the whispers. That would come in later; after Grandfather had pardoned Zuko's life. He heard the healer's aides murmuring that it was completely expected from Prince Ozai to want to kill his wife's bastard as soon as it was born. Horrible, of course, but expected.)

The moment Zuko looked at him with those eyes of molten gold, Lu Ten lost his breath for the first time since he was five and still learning to breathe correctly. A feeling he did not know flooded throught his body, filling every crevice. His heart, for the first time since his Mother's last embrace, felt warm. And then Zuko giggled and Lu Ten cried.

This little boy, all two and a half kilograms of him, had just become the center of his world.

He would raize cities to the ground, face dozens of assassins, to keep him safe. He would remain by his side and make sure his days are filled with joy, and safety and love.

Day 2: Stay close to me

AU where...everything is lost. Lu Ten never died, so Iroh took Ba Sing Se and became the Fire Lord two years later. The Northen Water Tribe has been under siege for 10 months and Omashu is the last refuge in the Earth Kingdom.

Even waking up four years earlier and getting some training, the Avatar is no match against the Yuyan Archers and the Dai Li. Lu Ten manages to capture him and drag him to the Palace, along with the two Watertribe savages that protected him so much.

Azula, having aided their cousin in the capture, gives the task of taking care of the Avatar's needs to Zuko, to humiliate him. Zuko accepts with his head high, expecting to find the Avatar frightening and furious.

Instead, he falls in love with Aang.

Oooffff, yeah, this is a harsh world.

(there's more about the backstory and the development of this AU on my blog, so go read thatt too, but I'll adress some things I haven't mentioned)

- Iroh is absolutely ruthless and has no posibility for redemption. No matter how much he loves Lu Ten or Zuko, he's the Fire Lord first.

- Zuko totally still ends up with his scar, but since the time Ozai had the flame to his face is shorter, it ends up being less damaging to his vision/hearing.

- Actually, in this one, Katara thaws out first. Zuko makes sure there's only female guards for her, and later, to prepare for the escape, he walks her through waterbending scrolls and gives her more water than is 'allowed' for a waterbender.

- AU OF THE AU: in this one, Zuko actually dies in Lu Ten's arms and...lets just say the guy loses it. Goes on the warpath. (My brain has been consumed by this particular AU and Lu Ten & Zuko's adorable relatipnship lives rent free in my head lol)

I feel like Jet would be furious with himself that he fell in love with Lee.

And it’ll take him ages to confess to the fact out loud.

He would know that he is in love almost immediately as it happens… because his heart would be racing every time Lee is late for the check in point, and his thoughts would be restless with unreasonable worry unable to focus on anything else.

And he would feel literal shocks go through his body every time they as much as brush their hands.

And sometimes he would zone out just looking at Lee as he speaks, and he would feel the corners of his mouth go up unintentionally.

So yeah, he would know for sure that he is in love, but he would try to hide or suppress it for a long time…

Because being in love makes you vulnerable and chaotic! And maybe, if he doesn’t say it out loud, it will just go away?

And he would be so angry at his stupid heart for choosing the worst freaking moment in his life, and probably the very wrong person, to fall in love.

So when he does finally say it out loud (cuz he realizes that the feeling is just growing stronger with each day), it sounds angry and not at all how the love confession should sound.

But Lee’s brows go up, and he looks totally confused and scared. And then he blushes lightly, and his expression turns into frown, and he looks up at the sky to avoid Jet’s eyes.

And Jet understands then that he and Lee are even more alike than he already knew…

Because maybe Lee has also never let himself fall in love, and maybe he is also terrified to be loved in return…
