I really really love what you write about Thranduil and Mirkwood. I never thought of Thranduil as someone embracing and assimilating the culture he came into, effectively shaking off his imperialistic heritage in favour of becoming a sylvan. Thank you for writing about that! In general, I learnt a lot of new things from your blog!
Hey there! Thank you! Thranduil is one of my favorite characters, so I try my best to do him justice and bring attention to just how phenomenal his character is. He is one of the largest anti-colonialism devices. And for how much I love The Hobbit, they did him ugly.
#there's a reason I spent an entire 3 novel-length fic trying to reconcile book!Thranduil with movie!Thranduil#although personally I think Sindar elves in Silvan lands would be like white people living in Hawaii#they only assimilate to a certain degree because in their hearts they still believe themselves to be superior#and within their lands there's going to be class differences and prejudice#but then to outsiders they present a unified front#whatever their interpersonal strife they're all Silvan to the Noldor#and proud of it#thranduil#the hobbit#silvan elves#lasgalen has a thought
