Dolorous Edd was with Jon Snow at Hardhome. He has been one of Jon’s oldest and loyalest friends, the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch. He has faced the White Walkers just as many times as Jon. He understood the importance of putting old biases aside, and embracing an alliance with the wildlings, because it was necessary for survival. 

Dolorous Edd is a sarcastic, sassy man, who was loyal to Sam, Jon, Grenn, and Pyp until his last moments, and always faced danger with a wry smile and a comedic line. He never forgot Grenn and Pyp, even years after they died. He was trusted by Ghost, a god damn direwolf, because of the absolute trust Jon had in him. 

Dolorous Edd stood in the way between Sam and a wight, and saved Sam’s life, giving his own life up in the process. He is the soul reason that Gilly and little Sam still have their partner and their father around. He is the soul reason that Samwell Tarly survived the War for Dawn.
