University students and best friends, Alexander Schmorell and Christopher Probst, both members of the anti-Nazi White Rose movement, and both betrayed by their school’s janitor. They were sentenced together and executed in 1943. Alexander was 25 and Christopher 24 .

Not glamorous, at all. This photo is raw but I had to share it here. This poor German boy was so traumatised and scared for his life, most likely drafted too. The older soldier must have told him to get it together, and quick. This is the picture of war, as uncomfortable to see now as it was back then.
