An inquiry into the new phenomenon driven by our intensifying ability to exchange and circulate self images has driven an inquiry into one's ability to capture and present one's image and present the self as one wants to be seen.

In the context of Trinidad & Tobago's Erotic Art Week 2009, Rodell Warner pushed this inquiry into the realm of how people imaged themselves as erotic, and how willing they might be to share those images. He created "the Photobooth"; a small, temporary studio space that provided visitors with privacy and a remote control that triggered a stationary camera.

With their signed permission, the images that participants captured of themselves were exhibited to the public the following night.

[Image: Coloured artwork of a dark-skinned young woman standing against a yellow-green background of chrysanthemum wings, overlaid with patterns.  She has her elbows raised away from her body, fingers splayed against the slopes of her breasts, and from the centre of her chest in its deep blue bodice dozens of small tropical birds fly.  The birds spiral upwards, turquoise and scarlet and black and lemon, and the woman's face is one of pained abandon, full mouth pursed and concentration drawing her eyebrows furrowed.]

DIGNITY: In Honor of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples by Dana Gluckstein
A collection of iconic photographs honors Indigenous Peoples worldwide. Its power, artistry and impassioned call to action make it a historic book in support of Indigenous Peoples who are among the world’s most impoverished and oppressed inhabitants. [Source]
The Indigenous Peoples of the world have a gift to give that the world needs desperately, this reminder that we are made for harmony, for interdependence. If we are ever to prosper, it will only be together… The work of Dana Gluckstein helps us to truly see, not just appearances, but essences, to see as God sees us, not just the physical form, but also the luminous soul that shines through us.
— Archbishop Desmond Tutu from the book’s foreword

“The Macintosh turned out so well because the people working on it were musicians, artists, poets and historians who also happened to be excellent computer scientists.”
Steve Jobs, in an interview with the New York Times (via sisterspock)

This makes me think of the incomparable Buffy Sainte-Marie, who was among the earliest artists who adopted computers for making music and media art.  She doesn't get enough credit for that.

Don't sleep on the Trini art scene, y'all.  Some of the linked photos on freepaper are NSFW for nudity, but well worth a look.

Anything with Nina Simone gets an auto-reblog. I am really quite ashamed of the fact that she isn’t considered more of a national treasure and visionary artist.
Seriously though, listen to such works as Sinnerman or Mississippi Goddamn or her version of Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood. Pirate Jenny is it’s own one woman opera and gorgeous besides.
By the by, I consider her version of House of the Rising Sun to be the one and only acceptable form of that song.

I first heard Nina Simone's "Sinnerman" in an episode of Homicide: Life on the Street (one of THE PIONEERING shows when it came to using songs to underscore the drama) and it gave me chills.  Every now and again I'm gripped with the need to listen to it again, and again and again, all along dem day.

Racebent Disney Challenge | Week 1 | Challenge Winner: pinkrosesbluebow
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
This submission won the challenge for the creator’s great incorporation of the original character design colors into an accurate and true-to-model costume. We received SO MANY great Snow Whites, but this one immediately caught my eye!
Thank you everyone for your wonderful submissions, I look forward to featuring them all this week! The 2nd Place and 3rd Place winners will be announced tomorrow! :)
pinkrosesbluebow:
The theme is Snow White if her story were set during the Heian Era of Japan. It’s really just a character/ costume design :)
This was fun: thanks for holding the contest!
