the tidal wave of hate for halsey was one of the weirdest things i’ve ever witnessed on this site. during the time in between room 93′s release and badlands’s hype, she was admittedly less popular, but people were psyched. here was a black, bisexual, bipolar young girl who was incredibly open about her identity, who was advocating for herself and finding moderate success, and it was really cool to see.

and then people started disliking her really loudly and vehemently, and it became the Fun Cool Popular thing to do. it was so strange. when she released the wlw version of the “ghost” video there were SO many people accusing her of seeking attention, pandering for views, “acting” gay, etc. there’s been an incredible amount of racism. there have been an incredible amount of people Calling Her Out for writing about her experiences of not being neurotypical. it’s so fucking frustrating to watch and frankly she deserves better.

like, this happened less than a week ago: she admitted that she’d attempted suicide after her bipolar diagnosis, and 90% of the responses on twitter were “good,” “who stopped her,” etc. i’m so angry that this girl is only 21 and she’s being put through so much shit.

I hate how the “end goal” for everyone who’s LGBT is basically for us to come out to everyone. Coming out is not a requirement that needs to be met. You can live a completely comfortable life without ever coming out to your parents or coworkers or anyone else that people assume you must be out to. Someone who’s not out is not “living a lie” because there’s nothing wrong or dishonest with protecting yourself, your safety, and the safety of your partner should you have one. As long as someone is comfortable and happy where they are, they’re under no obligation to change their out status. So we can stop pretending like coming out is the only major LGBT milestone and we can stop offering up a hundred million resources on how to do it unless it’s requested first.

today i am thankful for all the gay people who came out before me. risked their lives before I was born. did the dangerous thing. got killed, attacked, humiliated, incarcerated, and felt every form of emotional and physical violence simply because they “came out”. it is because of their bravery that I am legally married to my wife today. i have rights and privileges that came about at a cost that I will never truly know. thank you to my gay elders. thank you for coming out when the logical thing to do was to stay in.
