One thing that I always saw from Dany antis, but never really wrote a proper post to refute, is the claim that Quentyn is not the Sun’s son, it’s Young Griff, and that Young Griff is not the mummer’s dragon, it’s Jon. So I want to make a post about this.

The argument usually goes: “Quentyn can’t be the Sun’s son because he is the Sun, not the Sun’s son. The Sun’s son must be Young Griff”. But by this logic, Dany can’t be called “the dragon’s daughter” because she’s the dragon, not the dragon’s daughter. And yet, she is called the dragon’s daughter and daughter of dragons. At some point people have to recognize that GRRM was just trying to be poetic. Quentyn is pretty much confirmed to be the Sun’s son: he tried to steal Dany’s dragon, and if that wasn’t enough, his death creates a political problem for Dany in her negotiations with Dorne. So he was one of the people that Quaithe warned her she shouldn’t trust.

Another argument is that “Aegon is not the mummer’s dragon, he really is Elia’s son, so Jon is the mummer’s dragon, because Jon was hidden and playing a false role just like a mummer”. And like… no. First of all, because there’s a lot of evidence that Aegon is not the real Aegon, and that he could actually be Illyrio’s son:

Of course, nothing is set in stone until GRRM writes the next books and reveals the truth, but people have to stop acting like there’s no basis for the Aegon Blackfyre theory, because there is basis.

And Jon as the mummer’s dragon makes no sense. If Jon was going to be referred to as playing a false role (and therefore being a “mummer’s something”), he would be a mummer’s wolf, not a mummer’s dragon, because no one knows Jon is a “dragon”, everybody thinks he is a wolf. He is posing as a wolf, as a Stark bastard. Quaithe and the Undying didn’t warn Dany against a mummer’s wolf, but against a mummer’s dragon. They didn’t warn her against someone being paraded as a wolf but who is not a real wolf, they warned her against someone being paraded as a dragon but who is not a real dragon (which can only be Young Griff, because there’s no other character being paraded as a dragon in the story).

Finally, all of Dany’s other prophecies seem to refer to different people. Daughter of Death refers to Viserys, Rhaego (the tall lord with copper skin and silver hair) and Rhaegar (the dying prince with rubies flowing from his chest); Bride of Fire refers to Drogo, probably Hizdahr (the corpse on the ship), and Jon (blue flower in a wall of ice); Slayer of lies seem to refer to Stannis (blue-eyed king with no shadow), Aegon (mummer’s dragon) and probably Euron (stone beast breathing shadow fire from a smoking tower). Jon is already in another prophecy, the bride of fire prophecy. It would break the pattern GRRM wrote if he also was the cloth dragon (I’m not saying that it’s impossible for GRRM to decide to break the pattern in these prophecies, just that this pattern is another clue that Jon likely won’t appear twice and Aegon is the mummer’s dragon).

Obsessed with this Barristan moment

You could make a poultice out of mud to cool a fever. You could plant seeds in mud and grow a crop to feed your children. Mud would nourish you, where fire would only consume you, but fools and children and young girls would choose fire every time.

because he's talking about Daenerys, but it directly contrasts with Dany's own experience, in which fire does indeed heal what mud can't.

Beneath his painted vest, a plaster of fig leaves and caked blue mud covered the wound on his breast. The herbwomen had made it for him. Mirri Maz Duur's poultice had itched and burned, and he had torn it off six days ago, cursing her for a maegi. The mud plaster was more soothing, and the herbwomen made him poppy wine as well.

-

"I made him a poultice of firepod and sting-me-not and bound it in a lambskin."
"It burned, he said. He tore it off. The herbwomen made him a new one, wet and soothing."
"It burned, yes. There is great healing magic in fire, even your hairless men know that."

-

He slapped his bloody belly. "Count the cuts and you will know how many Strong Belwas has slain."
But Dany had lost Khal Drogo to a similar wound, and she was not willing to let it go untreated. She sent Missandei to find a certain Yunkish freedman renowned for his skill in the healing arts. Belwas howled and complained, but Dany scolded him and called him a big bald baby until he let the healer stanch the wound with vinegar, sew it shut, and bind his chest with strips of linen soaked in fire wine.

I guess Dany just built different

"It is not right to make him wait." Dany did not know why she was defending her brother, yet she was. "Viserys says he could sweep the Seven Kingdoms with ten thousand Dothraki screamers."

Daenerys IV, AGOT

"What is this, now? Truth, from a Lannister?" Oberyn smiled coldly. "Your father gave the commands, yes?"

"No." He spoke the lie without hesitation, and never stopped to ask himself why he should.

Daenerys Targaryen Appreciation Month: Day 9 and 28

Day 9: Anti Parallel with the Ruling Elite of Westeros

Dany has shown herself to be a much different kind of monarch than most, if not all, the ruling monarchs Robert Baratheon became King. Best examples would be Cersei and Joffrey who have both sat on the Iron Throne. Cersei and Joffrey sit high above their subjects on a unique throne and rule over them with cruelty and tyranny. They see themselves as superior to them. Dany on the other hand sees herself as equal to her people. That is why she chooses to sit on a simple bench at the bottom of the stairs so she can be at an equal level with her people. This was even confirmed by GRRM himself.

Marc Simonetti:  On the ADWD cover for Brazil, I put Daenerys at the top of the stairs of the Meereenese pyramid. I had undoubtedly been, unconsciously, influenced by the series. And George [R. R. Martin] told me that Daenerys wants equality for everyone, she wants to be at the same level as her people, so I had her climb down to keep it consistent.

Day 28: Antithesis to the Game of Thrones

We all know Cersei’s iconic line. “When you play the Game of Thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground”. Those who play the game play to further their own self interests. No concern for the smallfolk. Just how can they make themselves and their House (but mostly themselves) stronger and better than everyone else. Dany on the other hand is all about helping the smallfolk. Ending slavery isn’t in her interest to take the Iron Throne. But it doesn’t matter. Dany has immense empathy and compassion. As far as she’s concerned she cannot leave people to suffer even if it will not help her take back the Iron Throne. This is the polar opposite of those who play the game of thrones. To them the smallfolk are collateral. Unimportant except to be used as tools. But to Dany being a Queen means protecting those who cannot protect themselves.

The parallel journeys of Daenerys accepting her dragon identity in AGOT and ADWD

For Daenerys Targaryen Appreciation Month 2022

Day 30: Mother of Dragons

Daenerys goes through a similar journey in both A Game of Thrones and A Dance with Dragons when it comes to her dragon identity. In both books, she starts out as very afraid of dragons/her dragon identity:

There are no more dragons, Dany thought, staring at her brother, though she did not dare say it aloud.
Yet that night she dreamt of one. Viserys was hitting her, hurting her. She was naked, clumsy with fear. She ran from him, but her body seemed thick and ungainly. He struck her again. She stumbled and fell. “You woke the dragon,” he screamed as he kicked her. “You woke the dragon, you woke the dragon.” Her thighs were slick with blood. She closed her eyes and whimpered. As if in answer, there was a hideous ripping sound and the crackling of some great fire. When she looked again, Viserys was gone, great columns of flame rose all around, and in the midst of them was the dragon. It turned its great head slowly. When its molten eyes found hers, she woke, shaking and covered with a fine sheen of sweat. She had never been so afraid … - Daenerys II AGOT

~

She was the blood of the dragon. She could kill the Sons of the Harpy, and the sons of the sons, and the sons of the sons of the sons. But a dragon could not feed a hungry child nor help a dying woman’s pain. And who would ever dare to love a dragon? - Daenerys II ADWD

~

Mother of dragons, Daenerys thought. Mother of monsters. What have I unleashed upon the world? A queen I am, but my throne is made of burned bones, and it rests on quicksand. Without dragons, how could she hope to hold Meereen, much less win back Westeros? I am the blood of the dragon, she thought. If they are monsters, so am I. - Daenerys II ADWD

~

A crueler woman might have laughed at him, but Dany squeezed his hand and said, “They frighten me as well. There is no shame in that. My children have grown wild and angry in the dark.” - Daenerys VIII ADWD

This fear can be seen as both literal and metaphorical. The literal fear can be seen when Dany in AGOT is afraid of the dragon in her dream, and Dany in ADWD when Dany is afraid of what her dragons can do (eat people). But this is also metaphorical: Dany is afraid of the dragon in AGOT because she is still a meek girl who hasn’t found her strength yet, while in ADWD, her fear of what her dragons can do and the action of locking up her dragons symbolize Dany making compromises in Meereen for the sake of peace, compromising her beliefs, her values and her own strength.

Then, in both AGOT and ADWD, Dany starts her journey to get more in touch with her dragon identity, and in both cases, it symbolizes Dany finding her strength. In AGOT, we see this with Dany gradually accepting her dragon dreams and dragon identity, which coincides with her inner strength growing in the book, until she finally hatches her dragons:

Day followed day, and night followed night, until Dany knew she could not endure a moment longer. She would kill herself rather than go on, she decided one night …
Yet when she slept that night, she dreamt the dragon dream again. Viserys was not in it this time. There was only her and the dragon. Its scales were black as night, wet and slick with blood. Her blood, Dany sensed. Its eyes were pools of molten magma, and when it opened its mouth, the flame came roaring out in a hot jet. She could hear it singing to her. She opened her arms to the fire, embraced it, let it swallow her whole, let it cleanse her and temper her and scour her clean. She could feel her flesh sear and blacken and slough away, could feel her blood boil and turn to steam, and yet there was no pain. She felt strong and new and fierce.
And the next day, strangely, she did not seem to hurt quite so much. It was as if the gods had heard her and taken pity. Even her handmaids noticed the change. “Khaleesi,” Jhiqui said, “what is wrong? Are you sick?”
“I was,” she answered, standing over the dragon’s eggs that Illyrio had given her when she wed. She touched one, the largest of the three, running her hand lightly over the shell. Black-and-scarlet, she thought, like the dragon in my dream. The stone felt strangely warm beneath her fingers … or was she still dreaming? She pulled her hand back nervously. - Daenerys III AGOT

~

“You don’t want to wake the dragon, do you?”
[…]
“You don’t want to wake the dragon, do you?”
[…]
“… don’t want to wake the dragon, do you?”
Ser Jorah’s face was drawn and sorrowful. “Rhaegar was the last dragon,” he told her. He warmed translucent hands over a glowing brazier where stone eggs smouldered red as coals. One moment he was there and the next he was fading, his flesh colorless, less substantial than the wind. “The last dragon,” he whispered, thin as a wisp, and was gone. She felt the dark behind her, and the red door seemed farther away than ever.
“… don’t want to wake the dragon, do you?”
Viserys stood before her, screaming. “The dragon does not beg, slut. You do not command the dragon. I am the dragon, and I will be crowned.” The molten gold trickled down his face like wax, burning deep channels in his flesh. “I am the dragon and I will be crowned!” he shrieked, and his fingers snapped like snakes, biting at her nipples, pinching, twisting, even as his eyes burst and ran like jelly down seared and blackened cheeks.
“… don’t want to wake the dragon …”
The red door was so far ahead of her, and she could feel the icy breath behind, sweeping up on her. If it caught her she would die a death that was more than death, howling forever alone in the darkness. She began to run.
“… don’t want to wake the dragon …”
She could feel the heat inside her, a terrible burning in her womb. Her son was tall and proud, with Drogo’s copper skin and her own silver-gold hair, violet eyes shaped like almonds. And he smiled for her and began to lift his hand toward hers, but when he opened his mouth the fire poured out. She saw his heart burning through his chest, and in an instant he was gone, consumed like a moth by a candle, turned to ash. She wept for her child, the promise of a sweet mouth on her breast, but her tears turned to steam as they touched her skin.
“… want to wake the dragon …”
Ghosts lined the hallway, dressed in the faded raiment of kings. In their hands were swords of pale fire. They had hair of silver and hair of gold and hair of platinum white, and their eyes were opal and amethyst, tourmaline and jade. “Faster,” they cried, “faster, faster.” She raced, her feet melting the stone wherever they touched. “Faster!” the ghosts cried as one, and she screamed and threw herself forward. A great knife of pain ripped down her back, and she felt her skin tear open and smelled the stench of burning blood and saw the shadow of wings. And Daenerys Targaryen flew.
“… wake the dragon …”
The door loomed before her, the red door, so close, so close, the hall was a blur around her, the cold receding behind. And now the stone was gone and she flew across the Dothraki sea, high and higher, the green rippling beneath, and all that lived and breathed fled in terror from the shadow of her wings. She could smell home, she could see it, there, just beyond that door, green fields and great stone houses and arms to keep her warm, there. She threw open the door.
“… the dragon …”
And saw her brother Rhaegar, mounted on a stallion as black as his armor. Fire glimmered red through the narrow eye slit of his helm. “The last dragon,” Ser Jorah’s voice whispered faintly. “The last, the last.” Dany lifted his polished black visor. The face within was her own. - Daenerys IX AGOT

~

She heard the screams of frightened horses, and the voices of the Dothraki raised in shouts of fear and terror, and Ser Jorah calling her name and cursing. No, she wanted to shout to him, no, my good knight, do not fear for me. The fire is mine. I am Daenerys Stormborn, daughter of dragons, bride of dragons, mother of dragons, don’t you see? Don’t you SEE? With a belch of flame and smoke that reached thirty feet into the sky, the pyre collapsed and came down around her. Unafraid, Dany stepped forward into the firestorm, calling to her children. - Daenerys X AGOT

~

As Daenerys Targaryen rose to her feet, her black hissed, pale smoke venting from its mouth and nostrils. The other two pulled away from her breasts and added their voices to the call, translucent wings unfolding and stirring the air, and for the first time in hundreds of years, the night came alive with the music of dragons. - Daenerys X AGOT

This growing strength and the link to her dragons can also be seen in her relationship with Viserys, the dragon eggs, and her own position as heir to House Targaryen. She starts out letting Viserys take her dragon eggs, despite the fact that they bring comfort to her, but then gets to the point where she stands up to Viserys and sees he was not this terrifying dragon he claimed to be, but a pathetic man:

“The same could be said of rubies and diamonds and fire opals, Princess … and dragon’s eggs are rarer by far. Those traders he’s been drinking with would sell their own manhoods for even one of those stones, and with all three Viserys could buy as many sellswords as he might need.”
Dany had not known, had not even suspected. “Then … he should have them. He does not need to steal them. He had only to ask. He is my brother … and my true king.” - Daenerys V AGOT

~

He was no dragon, Dany thought, curiously calm. Fire cannot kill a dragon. - Daenerys V ADWD

She also goes from thinking that her brother is the true king, to thinking that her son one day will rule, to finally proclaiming herself to be the heir of House Targaryen and even having a dream telling her she is the last dragon:

“He is still the true king. He is …” - Daenerys III AGOT

~

When her son sat the Iron Throne, she would see that he had bloodriders of his own to protect him against treachery in his Kingsguard. - Daenerys IV AGOT

~

And saw her brother Rhaegar, mounted on a stallion as black as his armor. Fire glimmered red through the narrow eye slit of his helm. “The last dragon,” Ser Jorah’s voice whispered faintly. “The last, the last.” Dany lifted his polished black visor. The face within was her own. - Daenerys IX AGOT

~

“Why do you call me that?” Dany challenged him. “My brother Viserys was your king, was he not?”
“He was, my lady.”
“Viserys is dead. I am his heir, the last blood of House Targaryen. Whatever was his is mine now.” - Daenerys X AGOT

And in ADWD, we see how her gradual reconnection with her dragon identity is linked to getting more and more dissatisfied with the compromises she has to make with the slavers, and also linked to regaining her confidence, both in her decision to break the peace (taking off her floppy ears), as well as standing up to Khal Jhaqo at the very end of the book:

“Daenerys. Remember the Undying. Remember who you are.”
“The blood of the dragon.” But my dragons are roaring in the darkness. - Daenerys II ADWD

~

The boar buried his snout in Barsena’s belly and began rooting out her entrails. The smell was more than the queen could stand. The heat, the flies, the shouts from the crowd … I cannot breathe. She lifted her veil and let it flutter away. She took her tokar off as well. The pearls rattled softly against one another as she unwound the silk.
“Khaleesi?” Irri asked. “What are you doing?”
“Taking off my floppy ears.” - Daenerys IX ADWD

~

The dragon gave one last hiss and stretched out flat upon his belly. Black blood was flowing from the wound where the spear had pierced him, smoking where it dripped onto the scorched sands. He is fire made flesh, she thought, and so am I. - Daenerys IX ADWD

~

“Drogon killed a little girl. Her name was … her name …” Dany could not recall the child’s name. That made her so sad that she would have cried if all her tears had not been burned away. “I will never have a little girl. I was the Mother of Dragons.”
Aye, the grass said, but you turned against your children. - Daenerys X ADWD

~

I must keep walking. Water flows downhill. The stream will take me to the river, and the river will take me home.
Except it wouldn’t, not truly.
Meereen was not her home, and never would be. It was a city of strange men with strange gods and stranger hair, of slavers wrapped in fringed tokars, where grace was earned through whoring, butchery was art, and dog was a delicacy. Meereen would always be the Harpy’s city, and Daenerys could not be a harpy. - Daenerys X ADWD

~

No. You are the blood of the dragon. The whispering was growing fainter, as if Ser Jorah were falling farther behind. Dragons plant no trees. Remember that. Remember who you are, what you were made to be. Remember your words.
“Fire and Blood,” Daenerys told the swaying grass. - Daenerys X ADWD

~

Dany watched him go. When the sound of his hooves had faded away to silence, she began to shout. She called until her voice was hoarse … and Drogon came, snorting plumes of smoke. The grass bowed down before him. Dany leapt onto his back. She stank of blood and sweat and fear, but none of that mattered. “To go forward I must go back,” she said. Her bare legs tightened around the dragon’s neck. She kicked him, and Drogon threw himself into the sky. Her whip was gone, so she used her hands and feet and turned him north by east, the way the scout had gone. Drogon went willingly enough; perhaps he smelled the rider’s fear. - Daenerys X ADWD

~

The carcass was too heavy for him to bear back to his lair, so Drogon consumed his kill there, tearing at the charred flesh as the grasses burned around them, the air thick with drifting smoke and the smell of burnt horsehair. Dany, starved, slid off his back and ate with him, ripping chunks of smoking meat from the dead horse with bare, burned hands. In Meereen I was a queen in silk, nibbling on stuffed dates and honeyed lamb, she remembered. What would my noble husband think if he could see me now? Hizdahr would be horrified, no doubt. But Daario …
Daario would laugh, carve off a hunk of horsemeat with his arakh, and squat down to eat beside her.
As the western sky turned the color of a blood bruise, she heard the sound of approaching horses. Dany rose, wiped her hands on her ragged undertunic, and went to stand beside her dragon.
That was how Khal Jhaqo found her, when half a hundred mounted warriors emerged from the drifting smoke. - Daenerys X ADWD

In both books, Dany starts out scared and insecure, and grows to find her inner strength and (re)connect with her dragon identity. In AGOT, this growth is more directly about her own strength, while in ADWD, it’s about being more confident in her beliefs, in what she believes to be right or wrong (realizing that she doesn’t see the peace with the slavers as a real peace and that a war for freedom is the only way), and finally gaining the confidence to act on those beliefs, instead of compromising more and more of her values as she does in the beginning of the book.

A song of giggles

For Daenerys Targaryen Appreciation Month 2022

Day 25: Soft, gentle and humorous side of Dany

“Oh.” Dany felt disappointed, but Quaro liked his sausage so well he decided to have another one, and Rakharo had to outdo him and eat three more, belching loudly. Dany giggled. - Daenerys VI AGOT

When all the men had gone, her handmaids stripped off the travel-stained silks she wore, and Dany padded out to where the marble pool sat in the shade of a portico. The water was deliciously cool, and the pool was stocked with tiny golden fish that nibbled curiously at her skin and made her giggle. - Daenerys II ACOK

All three dragons turned their heads at the sound of that word, and Viserion let loose with a blast of pale gold flame that made Ser Jorah take a hasty step backward. Dany giggled. - Daenerys I ASOS

Behind the carved wooden door of the captain’s cabin, her dragons were restless. Drogon raised his head and screamed, pale smoke venting from his nostrils, and Viserion flapped at her and tried to perch on her shoulder, as he had when he was smaller. “No,” Dany said, trying to shrug him off gently. “You’re too big for that now, sweetling.” But the dragon coiled his white and gold tail around one arm and dug black claws into the fabric of her sleeve, clinging tightly. Helpless, she sank into Groleo’s great leather chair, giggling. - Daenerys II ASOS

“Five, were there? Well, that’s a confusion. I could not give you a number, my queen. This old Plumm was a lord, though, must have been a famous fellow in his day, the talk of all the land. The thing was, begging your royal pardon, he had himself a cock six foot long.”

The three bells in Dany’s braid tinkled when she laughed. “You mean inches, I think.”

“Feet,” Brown Ben said firmly. “If it was inches, who’d want to talk about it, now? Your Grace.”

Dany giggled like a little girl. - Daenerys V ASOS

“This after that you speak of never comes. You should hold court. My new men do not believe that you are real. The ones who came over from the Windblown. Bred and born in Westeros, most of them, full of tales about Targaryens. They want to see one with their own eyes. The Frog has a gift for you.”

Dany Month 2022 - Day 22

"No." She wanted him to stay and hold her. One day he will go and not return, she thought. One day some archer will put an arrow through his chest, or ten men will fall on him with spears and swords and axes, ten would-be heroes. Five of them would die, but that would not make her grief easier to bear. One day I will lose him, as I lost my sun-and-stars. But please gods, not today. "Come back to bed and kiss me." No one had ever kissed her like Daario Naharis. "I am your queen, and I command you to fuck me."

(...)

Her noble husband was soon fast asleep. Daenerys could only twist and turn beside him. She wanted to shake him, wake him, make him hold her, kiss her, fuck her again, but even if he did, he would fall back to sleep again afterward, leaving her alone in the darkness. She wondered what Daario was doing. Was he restless as well? Was he thinking about her? Did he love her, truly? Did he hate her for marrying Hizdahr? I should never have taken him into my bed. He was only a sellsword, no fit consort for a queen, and yet …

Daenerys VIII, ADWD

Dany is written as having sexual desires and she is not ashamed of them. It's similar to other male characters in the story, mainly Tyrion.

When Lemore climbed back onto the deck, Tyrion savored the sight of water trickling between her breasts, her smooth skin glowing golden in the morning light. She was past forty, more handsome than pretty, but still easy on the eye. Being randy is the next best thing to being drunk, he decided. It made him feel as if he was still alive.

Tyrion IV, ADWD

I think this writing is pretty remarkable in both cases because women and disabled people are often seen as dangerous when it comes to having sexual desires but the narrative here portrays them with humanity.

Daenerys is an independent thinker

For Daenerys Targaryen Appreciation Month 2022

Day 23: Underrated qualities and skills

One of Dany’s underrated qualities is that she is an independent thinker. It’s very interesting that she doesn’t really follow a set of rules and morals taught to her by society or family, and instead, she actually seems to follow her own instincts and make up her own mind about values and behaviors.

Dany was raised by Viserys, a person who believed he was superior to everyone by virtue of being a Targaryen, a person that despised Dothraki as worthless savages, a person who saw no problem in buying slaves and who sold his own sister. And instead of following in his footsteps, Dany decided on her own to reject Viserys’ values. Instead of seeing herself as superior like Viserys taught her, she values people of all social classes, believes in equality and is humble. Instead of despising the Dothraki, she values them and adapts to their culture against Viserys’ wishes. And of course, unlike Viserys who buys slaves, she becomes an abolitionist.

And it goes beyond just Viserys’ influence. Her entire society is full of values and beliefs that she ends up rejecting. She lives in a society that normalizes slavery, and even Jorah counsels her to buy slaves, and yet, she ended up growing an abolitionist conscience by herself. She lives in a highly hierarchical society, and yet, she just seems to naturally see value in every person’s life and has a desire to respect everyone equally. Nobody taught her that. She didn’t read it in any book by some radical progressive thinker, she came to that conclusion and that set of values purely through her own conscience and empathy. Her society is also extremely repressive of women’s sexuality, and yet Dany sees nothing wrong in being sexually free and having a lover. There’s no feminist movement in her world, and yet she doesn’t really let society pressure her into feeling ashamed of herself (like when the Green Grace tries to shame her for having a lover), as if by herself she had come to the conclusion that she had nothing to be ashamed of. There’s no feminist movement, and yet she thinks by herself that women are not inferior, allows women in councils and political positions, lets women fight, demands equality in marriage rites and refuses to join the dosh khaleen. Her thoughts on kings and queens having a duty to protect people? It might have come from idealistic songs and stories, it’s true, but as someone raised by Viserys (someone who saw kingship as a privilege instead of a duty) it’s still quite surprising that she stuck with that perspective of rulership instead of his. In fact, she even comes up with her own philosophy on what being a queen is (see here).

Dany also constantly makes her own decisions instead of just following what other people or her advisors tell her to do. On her own, Dany pieces together the clues on how to hatch the dragons, despite no one having the knowledge on how to do it and Mirri saying that she is mad. Despite everyone normalizing the rape of the Lhazareen women, despite everyone warning her against trying to protect them and that she would anger Drogo’s men, Dany still decides to take those women under her protection. When traveling through the Red Waste, Dany decides on her own to send scouts ahead to find the way. When they arrive in Vaes Tolorro, she decides on her own (out of her own pragmatism) to enter the city, despite her khalasar warning her against it (because the city has bones laying around). On her own, she decides to send her bloodriders to look for the right way to go and orders her khalasar to plant and repair the gates in order to be prepared for an attack. Despite Jorah urging Dany to buy the Unsullied and Barristan urging Dany to leave Astapor behind and hire sellswords, Dany finds a different solution and makes her own plan to free the Unsullied. She makes her own plan to deceive the Yunkish and their sellswords, makes her own battle plans in both Yunkai and Meereen, decides to take Daario into her service against Jorah’s advice, and decides to stay in Meereen even though her advisors tell her to sail to Westeros. As a ruler in Meereen, she is constantly making her own independent decisions: deciding how to investigate murders, how to take security measures to protect the Unsullied (that they shouldn’t walk alone, and later, that she would pull them back to the barracks), deciding to create a new watch for the city, deciding to plant new crops and build irrigation ditches, deciding to seek trade with other cities (x, x) and send envoys for alliances, carefully weighing the benefits and disadvantages of marrying Hizdahr before deciding what to do, making her own decisions at court even though she could delegate that to an advisor, deciding that she should try to bribe the sellsword hired by her enemies, among many other decisions. (For a more detailed analysis on how Dany listens to different advices but still comes to her own decisions, I suggest reading this series of metas: x, x, x, x, x, x)

So in conclusion, Dany is an independent thinker because she is observant, because she questions society’s values and makes up her own mind about her values and beliefs despite the influence of her brother or her society, because she is progressive even though there are no progressive political movements that could have taught her those values, because she constantly finds different solutions to problems on her own (usually better than the solutions proposed by her advisors) and because she is capable of listening to different viewpoints while also making her own decisions on how to wage battles, deal with political adversaries, etc.

Daenerys and sexual freedom

For Daenerys Targaryen Appreciation Month 2022

Day 22: Sexuality and sexual empowerment

Daenerys is a woman who is very ahead of her time in many aspects. One of them is her views on sexuality. Dany is a woman who is very sexually liberated. We can see this in how she freely seeks her own pleasure:

What Dany wanted she could not begin to say, but Jorah’s kiss had woken something in her, something that had been sleeping since Khal Drogo died. Lying abed in her narrow bunk, she found herself wondering how it would be to have a man squeezed in beside her in place of her handmaid, and the thought was more exciting than it should have been. Sometimes she would close her eyes and dream of him, but it was never Jorah Mormont she dreamed of; her lover was always younger and more comely, though his face remained a shifting shadow.
Once, so tormented she could not sleep, Dany slid a hand down between her legs, and gasped when she felt how wet she was. Scarce daring to breathe, she moved her fingers back and forth between her lower lips, slowly so as not to wake Irri beside her, until she found one sweet spot and lingered there, touching herself lightly, timidly at first and then faster. Still, the relief she wanted seemed to recede before her, until her dragons stirred, and one screamed out across the cabin, and Irri woke and saw what she was doing.
Dany knew her face was flushed, but in the darkness Irri surely could not tell. Wordless, the handmaid put a hand on her breast, then bent to take a nipple in her mouth. Her other hand drifted down across the soft curve of belly, through the mound of fine silvery-gold hair, and went to work between Dany’s thighs. It was no more than a few moments until her legs twisted and her breasts heaved and her whole body shuddered. She screamed then. Or perhaps that was Drogon. Irri never said a thing, only curled back up and went back to sleep the instant the thing was done. - Daenerys II ASOS

~

Dany tried to imagine what it would be like if she allowed Daario to kiss her, the way Jorah had kissed her on the ship. The thought was exciting and disturbing, both at once. It is too great a risk. The Tyroshi sellsword was not a good man, no one needed to tell her that. Under the smiles and the jests he was dangerous, even cruel. Sallor and Prendahl had woken one morning as his partners; that very night he’d given her their heads. Khal Drogo could be cruel as well, and there was never a man more dangerous. She had come to love him all the same. Could I love Daario? What would it mean, if I took him into my bed? Would that make him one of the heads of the dragon? Ser Jorah would be angry, she knew, but he was the one who’d said she had to take two husbands. Perhaps I should marry them both and be done with it. - Daenerys V ASOS

~

That night she could not sleep but turned and twisted restlessly in her bed. She even went so far as to summon Irri, hoping her caresses might help ease her way to rest, but after a short while she pushed the Dothraki girl away. Irri was sweet and soft and willing, but she was not Daario. - Daenerys IV ADWD

~

She believed him. “I swore that I should wed Hizdahr zo Loraq if he gave me ninety days of peace, but now … I wanted you from the first time that I saw you, but you were a sellsword, fickle, treacherous. You boasted that you’d had a hundred women.”
“A hundred?” Daario chuckled through his purple beard. “I lied, sweet queen. It was a thousand. But never once a dragon.”
She raised her lips to his. “What are you waiting for?” - Daenerys VI ADWD

~

That night Daario had her every way a man can have a woman, and she gave herself to him willingly. The last time, as the sun was coming up, she used her mouth to make him hard again, as Doreah had taught her long ago, then rode him so wildly that his wound began to bleed again, and for one sweet heartbeat she could not tell whether he was inside of her, or her inside of him. - Daenerys VII ADWD

She also doesn’t feel ashamed or shy about her sexuality, and doesn’t think she should feel ashamed:

There is no privacy in the heart of the khalasar. Dany felt the eyes on her as she undressed him, heard the soft voices as she did the things that Doreah had told her to do. It was nothing to her. Was she not khaleesi? His were the only eyes that mattered, and when she mounted him she saw something there that she had never seen before. She rode him as fiercely as ever she had ridden her silver, and when the moment of his pleasure came, Khal Drogo called out her name. - Daenerys III AGOT

~

The innermost wall was fifty feet of black marble, with carvings that made Dany blush until she told herself that she was being a fool. She was no maid; if she could look on the grey wall’s scenes of slaughter, why should she avert her eyes from the sight of men and women giving pleasure to one another? - Daenerys II ACOK

~

“I would speak to you about the presumption of a certain sellsword captain.”
She dares say that in open court? Dany felt a blaze of anger. She has courage, I grant that, but if she thinks I am about to suffer another scolding, she could not be more wrong. “The treachery of Brown Ben Plumm has shocked us all,” she said, “but your warning comes too late. And now I know you will want to return to your temple to pray for peace.” - Daenerys VII ADWD

~

And she wondered how much the Yunkai'i knew about what her captain meant to her. She had asked Ser Barristan that question the afternoon the hostages went forth. “They will have heard the talk,” he had replied. “Naharis may even have boasted of Your Grace’s … of your great … regard … for him. If you will forgive my saying so, modesty is not one of the captain’s virtues. He takes great pride in his … his swordsmanship.”
He boasts of bedding me, you mean. But Daario would not have been so foolish as to make such a boast amongst her enemies. It makes no matter. By now the Yunkai'i will be marching home. That was why she had done all that she had done. For peace. - Daenerys X ADWD

Daenerys Targaryen Appreciation Month

Day 29: Compassion

Daenerys is easily one of the kindest and most compassionate characters in the whole entire series. One of the best examples is what she does for her handmaiden Doreah. When Doreah is dying, one of Dany’s bloodriders tells Dany they need to leave her behind. But Dany refuses. Despite the fact that Doreah would be dead soon, Dany gives her her own water and refuses to go on until Doreah has passed.

Doreah took a fever and grew worse with every league they crossed. Her lips and hands broke with blood blisters, her hair came out in clumps, and one evenfall she lacked the strength to mount her horse. Jhogo said they must leave her or bind her to her saddle, but Dany remembered a night on the Dothraki sea, when the Lysene girl had taught her secrets so that Drogo might love her more. She gave Doreah water from her own skin, cooled her brow with a damp cloth, and held her hand until she died, shivering. Only then would she permit the khalasar to press on.

Someone like Cersei or even Stannis would have just left her to die because she’s not good for much anymore. But not Dany. Dany loves her people and is a kind woman. She makes sure to keep Doreah company until she finally passes on.

Daenerys & discomfort in gifted clothes

[dany month day 5: dresses & costumes]

As a Princess, Khaleesi, and Queen, Daenerys is expected to look the part. In many instances she is gifted clothing that she does not feel comfortable in, gifts that reflect what the gifter expects of her. Daenerys is able to identify the expectations behind these supposed gifts, and the power balance she plays with by either wearing them or not wearing them.

Dany touched it. The cloth was so smooth that it seemed to run through her fingers like water. She could not remember ever wearing anything so soft. It frightened her. She pulled her hand away. "Is it really mine?"
"A gift from the Magister Illyrio," Viserys said, smiling. Her brother was in a high mood tonight. "The color will bring out the violet in your eyes. And you shall have gold as well, and jewels of all sorts. Illyrio has promised. Tonight you must look like a princess."
A princess, Dany thought. She had forgotten what that was like. Perhaps she had never really known. "Why does he give us so much?" she asked. "What does he want from us?"

-AGOT, Daenerys I

Other gifts she was given in plenty by other Dothraki: slippers and jewels and silver rings for her hair, medallion belts and painted vests and soft furs, sandsilks and jars of scent, needles and feathers and tiny bottles of purple glass, and a gown made from the skin of a thousand mice. "A handsome gift, Khaleesi," Magister Illyrio said of the last, after he had told her what it was. "Most lucky." The gifts mounted up around her in great piles, more gifts than she could possibly imagine, more gifts than she could want or use.

-AGOT, Daenerys II

Rhaegal hissed and dug sharp black claws into her bare shoulder as Dany stretched out a hand for the wine. Wincing, she shifted him to her other shoulder, where he could claw her gown instead of her skin. She was garbed after the Qartheen fashion. Xaro had warned her that the Enthroned would never listen to a Dothraki, so she had taken care to go before them in flowing green samite with one breast bared, silvered sandals on her feet, with a belt of black-and-white pearls about her waist. For all the help they offered, I could have gone naked. Perhaps I should have. She drank deep.

-ACOK, Daenerys III

If the Milk Men thought her such a savage, she would dress the part for them. When she went to the stables, she wore faded sandsilk pants and woven grass sandals. Her small breasts moved freely beneath a painted Dothraki vest, and a curved dagger hung from her medallion belt. Jhiqui had braided her hair Dothraki fashion, and fastened a silver bell to the end of the braid.

-ACOK, Daenerys IV

Today she wore a robe of purple samite and a silver sash, and on her head the three-headed dragon crown the Tourmaline Brotherhood had given her in Qarth. Her slippers were silver as well, with heels so high that she was always half afraid she was about to topple over. When she was dressed, Missandei brought her a polished silver glass so she could see how she looked. Dany stared at herself in silence. Is this the face of a conqueror? So far as she could tell, she still looked like a little girl.

-ASOS, Daenerys VI

[...]Irri and Jhiqui were waiting to brush the tangles from her hair and garb her as befit the Queen of Meereen, in a Ghiscari tokar.
The garment was a clumsy thing, a long loose shapeless sheet that had to be wound around her hips and under an arm and over a shoulder, its dangling fringes carefully layered and displayed. Wound too loose, it was like to fall off; wound too tight, it would tangle, trip, and bind. Even wound properly, the tokar required its wearer to hold it in place with the left hand. Walking in a tokar demanded small, mincing steps and exquisite balance, lest one tread upon those heavy trailing fringes. It was not a garment meant for any man who had to work. The tokar was a master's garment, a sign of wealth and power.

-ADWD, Daenerys I

Lord Ghael had a mouth of brown and rotten teeth and the pointed yellow face of a weasel. He also had a gift. "Cleon the Great sends these slippers as a token of his love for Daenerys Stormborn, the Mother of Dragons."
Irri slid the slippers onto Dany's feet. They were gilded leather, decorated with green freshwater pearls. Does the butcher king believe a pair of pretty slippers will win my hand? "King Cleon is most generous. You may thank him for his lovely gift." Lovely, but made for a child. Dany had small feet, yet the pointed slippers mashed her toes together.

-ADWD, Daenerys I

Meereen was not her home, and never would be. It was a city of strange men with strange gods and stranger hair, of slavers wrapped in fringed tokars, where grace was earned through whoring, butchery was art, and dog was a delicacy. Meereen would always be the Harpy's city, and Daenerys could not be a harpy.

Day 13: Dany Being Critical of Herself and Self-Aware

"These are not apples, Ben," said Dany. "These are men and women, sick and hungry and afraid." My children. "I should have gone to Astapor."
"Your Grace could not have saved them," said Ser Barristan. "You warned King Cleon against this war with Yunkai. The man was a fool, and his hands were red with blood."
And are my hands any cleaner? She remembered what Daario had said—that all kings must be butchers, or meat. "Cleon was the enemy of our enemy. If I had joined him at the Horns of Hazzat, we might have crushed the Yunkai'i between us."
The Shavepate disagreed. "If you had taken the Unsullied south to Hazzat, the Sons of the Harpy—"
"I know. I know. It is Eroeh all over again."
Brown Ben Plumm was puzzled. "Who is Eroeh?"
"A girl I thought I'd saved from rape and torment. All I did was make it worse for her in the end. And all I did in Astapor was make ten thousand Eroehs."
"Your Grace could not have known—"
"I am the queen. It was my place to know."
"What is done is done," said Reznak mo Reznak. "Your Worship, I beg you, take the noble Hizdahr for your king at once. He can speak with the Wise Masters, make a peace for us."

Little children with swollen stomachs trailed after them, too weak or scared to beg. Gaunt men with sunken eyes squatted amidst sand and stones, shitting out their lives in stinking streams of brown and red. Many shat where they slept now, too feeble to crawl to the ditches she'd commanded them to dig. Two women fought over a charred bone. Nearby a boy of ten stood eating a rat. He ate one-handed, the other clutching a sharpened stick lest anyone try to wrest away his prize. Unburied dead lay everywhere. Dany saw one man sprawled in the dirt under a black cloak, but as she rode past his cloak dissolved into a thousand flies. Skeletal women sat upon the ground clutching dying infants. Their eyes followed her. Those who had the strength called out. "Mother … please, Mother … bless you, Mother …"
Bless me, Dany thought bitterly. Your city is gone to ash and bone, your people are dying all around you. I have no shelter for you, no medicine, no hope. Only stale bread and wormy meat, hard cheese, a little milk. Bless me, bless me.
What kind of mother has no milk to feed her children?

No queen has clean hands, Dany told herself. She thought of Doreah, of Quaro, of Eroeh … of a little girl she had never met, whose name had been Hazzea.

Day 12: The Unsullied

"Spears!" Dany heard one Astapori shout. It was Grazdan, old Grazdan in his tokar heavy with pearls. "Unsullied! Defend us, stop them, defend your masters! Spears! Swords!"
When Rakharo put an arrow through his mouth, the slaves holding his sedan chair broke and ran, dumping him unceremoniously on the ground. The old man crawled to the first rank of eunuchs, his blood pooling on the bricks. The Unsullied did not so much as look down to watch him die. Rank on rank on rank, they stood.
And did not move. The gods have heard my prayer.
[...] "Dracarys!" they shouted back, the sweetest word she'd ever heard. "Dracarys! Dracarys!"
A Storm of Swords, Daenerys III

When she had commanded the Unsullied to choose officers from amongst themselves, Grey Worm had been their overwhelming choice for the highest rank. Dany had put Ser Jorah over him to train him for command, and the exile knight said that so far the young eunuch was hard but fair, quick to learn, tireless, and utterly unrelenting in his attention to detail.
[....] One of the first things Dany had done after the fall of Astapor was abolish the custom of giving the Unsullied new slave names every day. Most of those born free had returned to their birth names; those who still remembered them, at least. Others had called themselves after heroes or gods, and sometimes weapons, gems, and even flowers, which resulted in soldiers with some very peculiar names, to Dany's ears. Grey Worm had remained Grey Worm. When she asked him why, he said, "It is a lucky name. The name this one was born to was accursed. That was the name he had when he was taken for a slave. But Grey Worm is the name this one drew the day Daenerys Stormborn set him free."

"My queen," replied the captain, "your servant Stalwart Shield had no duty last night. He had gone to a … a certain place … to drink, and have companionship."

And the king's protectors grew fewer every day. Hizdahr's blunder with Grey Worm had cost him the Unsullied. Before midday a dozen fires were burning. Columns of greasy black smoke rose up to stain a merciless blue sky. Dany's riding clothes were stained and sooty as she stepped back from the pyres. "Worship," Grey Worm said, "this one and his brothers beg your leave to bathe in the salt sea when our work here is done, that we might be purified according to the laws of our great goddess."
The queen had not known that the eunuchs had a goddess of their own.
"Who is this goddess? One of the gods of Ghis?"
Grey Worm looked troubled. "The goddess is called by many names. She is the Lady of Spears, the Bride of Battle, the Mother of Hosts, but her true name belongs only to these poor ones who have burned their manhoods upon her altar. We may not speak of her to others. This one begs your forgiveness."
"As you wish. Yes, you may bathe if that is your desire. Thank you for your help."
"These ones live to serve you."

Dany Month 2022 - Day 9

Ten thousand throats roared out their thanks; then twenty thousand; then all. They did not call her name, which few of them could pronounce. "Mother!" they cried instead; in the old dead tongue of Ghis, the word was Mhysa! They stamped their feet and slapped their bellies and shouted, "Mhysa, Mhysa, Mhysa," until the whole pit seemed to tremble. Dany let the sound wash over her. I am not your mother, she might have shouted, back, I am the mother of your slaves, of every boy who ever died upon these sands whilst you gorged on honeyed locusts. Behind her, Reznak leaned in to whisper in her ear, "Magnificence, hear how they love you!"

Dany doesn't like to be associated with slave owners and the elite. That's because she was sold into slavery herself.

Day 11: Dany as a messianic/religious savior and hero

When the fire died at last and the ground became cool enough to walk upon, Ser Jorah Mormont found her amidst the ashes, surrounded by blackened logs and bits of glowing ember and the burnt bones of man and woman and stallion. She was naked, covered with soot, her clothes turned to ash, her beautiful hair all crisped away … yet she was unhurt.
The cream-and-gold dragon was suckling at her left breast, the green-and-bronze at the right. Her arms cradled them close. The black-and-scarlet beast was draped across her shoulders, its long sinuous neck coiled under her chin. When it saw Jorah, it raised its head and looked at him with eyes as red as coals.
Wordless, the knight fell to his knees. The men of her khas came up behind him. Jhogo was the first to lay his arakh at her feet. "Blood of my blood," he murmured, pushing his face to the smoking earth. "Blood of my blood," she heard Aggo echo. "Blood of my blood," Rakharo shouted.
And after them came her handmaids, and then the others, all the Dothraki, men and women and children, and Dany had only to look at their eyes to know that they were hers now, today and tomorrow and forever, hers as they had never been Drogo's.
A Game of Thrones, Daenerys X

"We follow the comet," Dany told her khalasar. Once it was said, no word was raised against it. They had been Drogo's people, but they were hers now. The Unburnt, they called her, and Mother of Dragons. Her word was their law. - A Clash of Kings - Daenerys I
