Lil bro is going through the worst molt of his life which is not unusual for ringnecks while getting their ring, but he’s also decided after a year and a half he can seek me out to hang out. This is the closest he’s ever gotten unprompted.
It was chop time this weekend
1.) half a cup of tricolor cooked quinoa (makes about 3 cups cooked)
2.) half a cooked sweet potato - diced (sub with any large squash, sometimes I use acorn or butternut)
3.) 5.5 oz spinach and spring mix
4.) 3 small beets - peeled
5.) 3os carrots
6.) 3 oz broccoli
7.) one yellow squash
8.) 4 oz snap peas or green beans
9.) one bell pepper
10.) half an apple (sometimes I’ll use a mango here instead)
11.) half a pomegranate (or whatever berries are in season instead)
12.) a handful of grapes
13.) pinch of chia seeds
14.) pinch of flax seeds
15.) pinch of coconut flakes
16 .) some loose rolled oats
All the large fruits and veggies and spinach get chopped up in a food processor, I’ll usually hand chop some of the apples, carrot, and squash for a variance in texture.
Pomegranate was a new one in the chop itself, usually I’ll skewer chunks of pomegranate and stick it in their cages when they’re outside bc it’s a fruit with a lot of disassembly value but it’s been too cold to be outside lately.
The thing nobody tells you about bird rooms is that it takes 100,000 million years to finish one if you work 60 hours a week (half of that is at home and they hang out with me on Laptop Job days so they are not neglected) but BLEASE.. CAPITALISM… give me time to put BRANCHES on my WALLS.
Babygirl has entered The Hornies. Send prayers.
Blease.. ma’am stop committing crimes against my door frame.
I think I’m going to put two curtain rods across that door - one for perching and one for hanging her favorite toys on - because she loves hanging out with me during the workday but I don’t want her eating.. yknow.. paint
Best beastie
Absolutely absurd how much of my mental health rides on this $4 street fair kazoo.
Also Rainbow Scream Time update
Roswell is doing pretty well - the more he flies and has opportunity to destroy toys the less he gets stuck in his screaming loops. I will not lie to you though, when he gets stuck in those stereotypical behaviors it’s really, really difficult to live with.
He and Ducky still don’t love one another but given that he was given to me as a bird that “can’t get along with anyone” one or two mild scuffles a week that end in both of them redirecting to their cages is p. good in my book. We are still clicking and rewarding relaxed behavior when they are loose together. He and the ringnecks are besties.
I have restarted Duck on harness training, kind of fell off on that due to adding Ros and various other life issues.
Short set of “step ups!” With the lad.
Had him for just about a year now. He was living in a pretty gross situation before I got him. At first I could not get within 6 feet of him so we started with a VERY high value treat (peanuts) for simple targets inside the cage with a treat dropped in the bowl, then had him move towards a target and taking treats from fingers, then had him target to touch my hands and forearms and now we are finally stepping on my forearms (but still NO stepping on hands, he is quite clear about that.)
I see a lot of content from folks that can train very quickly (especially on YT) and while my conures are very confident quick learners and those people have been invaluable to me- Eif has taken a lot of time and I think it’s good to see some of the birds that don’t take to something in one session.
Currently are working on staying on my arm for 3-5 seconds and then getting a treat. It’s going ok!
What am I except a post bath Flesh Snuggie for a 4oz Noise Raptor?
Caique from Temu
My beauttiful waife… she bite me on my y head :(
Ros update: I basically just packed his cage to see what he was about. He likes palm tassly stuff and pine blocks but his one true love is cardboard in various textures and shapes.
He’s doing pretty well, I’m not seeing evidence of further mutilation in his tray, he is REALLY struggling with not eating only sunflower seeds though. I am having to feed him some so he doesn’t shut down but I’m hiding them in pellet slurries and chop to try to get him used to textures etc.
When I was teaching Eiffel I was able to just sit with him and eat new foods with him but it’s tornado season right now and that’s hard.
I did stick a couple forage toys in with him. He has touched them but I’m not expecting more than that at this moment.
Ducky is accepting him too, she’s still a little hateful and head bobby but she’s moving past it faster than I expected.
Ducky is having REALLY Big HUGE Feelers about the new guy. I expected this and we are working through it. She took a bath and we hung out and watched TikTok for a couple hours.
Roswell is doing well, he’s flock calling for his people some which is understandable but if you’ve never lived with a Sun conure I can’t adequately express to you how loud this is. My ears hurt and I spend several days a week in shops with constant air tools. He’s really resisting any food that isn’t straight up sunflower seeds but I got him to eat a little apple and try a few pellets. He is a toy FIEND.
The ringnecks are totally indifferent to him, ducky is a little jealous but I think once she realizes she isn’t being replaced she will cool it.
Hot new activity: Flooraging
