using "what were YOU doing at the devils sacrament" to mean "yeah i made an embarrassing reference but you understood it which is also embarrassing" is very funny to me

my favorite part is that absolutely nobody says this except here. so if you use it in public, it's a dead giveaway that you spent the last ten years on tumblr. but then again, they recognized it, which means they were at the devil's sacrament

Got Spare Feathers?

BIRBLR! I found this really cool Facebook group through a mutual friend. https://www.facebook.com/groups/848166298569126/ Here’s what it’s about:

This group’s purpose is to receive and distribute donated feathers from Companion Birds, for free to traditional Native Americans. The feathers will be dispersed to craftsmen who make & give away items to be used in Native American church, blessings, naming of babies, or to be utilized as accessories in the circle of powwows. Macaw, Parrot, Asiatic Parakeet, Cockatoo are some of the feathers needed. Items made from these are fans, hair pieces, & adornments for sacred items. It is up to a 7 year wait for Native Americans to receive Eagle, Hawk, & Falcon feathers from the Federal Fish & Wildlife service, but the need for feathers to make and use for ceremonial purposes is there daily.  This is a great way for your companion bird to be honored. All feathers prior to use are blessed, praying for good feelings, good thoughts. This is done with all feathers, eagle, hawk, falcon, anhinga, scissortail, flicker, as well as donated companion bird feathers.   None of the donated feathers will be sold, bartered nor traded. This is a requirement of the person requesting feathers from the Feather Depot.

So that’s an awesome and important use for feathers you might just have laying around. I don’t know much about Native American culture, but from the posts it sounds like these feathers would have significant meaning to the people they went to. My girls are mostly too small except tail feathers (which usually come out mangled), but those with larger birds might enjoy knowing that their feathers are being cherished. Here are some photos from the group:

( here is a fan used in church made from about 60 or so ringneck feathers… or some other asiatic parakeet )

( This is how we keep our items made out of feathers when not in use. An aromatic cedar box.. some are made specifically to fit our fans… )

The last of the equipment/cages are leaving tomorrow. From the first (a meat mutt named socks) to the last (14 year old GrCH DJ Liam - a Lilac Tan) what a time we had!

so much of being an ok person is just 1) not panicking, 2) not taking things personally, and 3) not letting the vindictive gargoyle that lives in your head tell you what to do. this sucks because brains love doing those things

i wanna do a poll for this but there’s too many options…sunnyblr, what is the most Quintessential episode of sunny to you? not your necessarily your favorite episode, but the episode that is the Most sunny? like if you had to show someone one episode to epitomize the show (not necessarily to convince them to watch but to show them the essence of the show), what episode would it be? and why?

i thought it was possible to starve on rabbits? also whats your take on raising ducks for meat

Avatar

yeah that is one of the most annoying myths that keeps getting spread around. while 'rabbit starvation' (a colloquial term for protein poisoning; it can also be called 'mal de caribou' or caribou sickness,) IS real, it only occurs when you eat only protein, no fat or carbs or anything else, for an extremely long time - like months to years. it gets that name because it's something that did happen historically with some frequency in people who were consuming nothing but wild rabbits or other lean game over long winters.

domestic rabbits are fat. they have been bred to gain weight in both muscle and fat, live sedentary lifestyles, and eat a diet formulated for production. and even if wild rabbit is your only protein source forever, the average modern person with access to a grocery store will not be eating ONLY rabbit for every meal, nothing else. eat a balanced diet with both fat and carbs in addition to protein and you'll be fine, i promise.

also for the second point: i do raise ducks for meat and i love them but i would not recommend them for anyone with a limited amount of space unless you loooooooove cleaning up bird shit. the amount of absolutely VILE waste that ducks can make is nothing short of astounding. no water source will ever be clean again.

they are so delicious, and i raise about five to ten of them a year to eat, but the only reason i tolerate doing so is because mine free range on an acre and a half lol
