thinking about how Johnny and Alex met at a shitty night job and decided a few years later to write an audio drama that literally changed the lives of thousands of people. how Harlan was literally unemployed when he decided to start making malevolent, and now he's singlehandedly revolutionizing the audio drama landscape. or Zach Valenti and Gabriel Urbina being long-time college friends who wanted to make something fun with no expectation that over 20 million people would listen to it....not being hyperbolic at all when I say that some of the best pieces of audio fiction have been made in basements by teams of less than 3 people. wtnv has always been a few friends who wanted to make something interesting after their day job. i am just thinking of artists persevering under the crushing weight of capitalism. .. and great art made out of pure love and curiosity for an emerging medium...

every horror writer in history wanted what the 19th floor subplot in the Wayside School books had

Also the gentlemen with the black attaché case who offer you the choice between being safe or being free and the dead rats who live in the basement.

I have no idea what Wayside School is

It’s a trilogy of absurdist children’s novels published by Louis Sachar (the author of Holes) about a school that was supposed to be one storey with thirty rooms but is actually thirty storeys with a room on each floor because the builders were holding the plans sideways (and apparently this is how architecture works). Each book consists of a series of thirty loosely interrelated short stories about the students on the thirtieth floor, and there are a bunch of weird anomalous things that become running gags throughout the novels and, actually, now that I think about it, I can definitely see how Night Vale would have been inspired by this

Sideways Stories from Wayside School is basically “American Elementary School Gothic”.

like, listen, the best dynamic for tma/wtnv crossover is cecil being cheerfully oblivious and jon being at first all serious & sinister like he is abt statements and then gradually being more and more confused by this strange happy man. like. for example.

jon: statement of cecil palmer, regarding...

cecil: oh, idk, i guess i went to target last week?

jon, ominous: ...regarding a trip to target. statement recorded direct from subject.

cecil, with that 'never mind all that' tone: o...kay! so as always the target greeters saw me at the door and were all like 'our dark lord shall feast on those who enter here' and i was like 'great! do you guys have those infuser water bottles?' because carlos saw some on tv and was telling me--

jon: i'm sorry, the target greeters said what?

cecil: you know, their standard greeting! it's been standard since the 90s, when they changed it from 'beware the burden your soul will bear'!

jon, getting less ominous as he gets more confused: ...right. continue?

cecil: anyway, carlos was telling me all about how proper hydration can help deter throat spiders--

jon: throat what.

Thats it.

Thats the show.

If you don’t know if you want to get into Welcome To Night Vale, listen to this clip, it does a perfect job of summing up the entire experience.

this is quite legitimately one of my favorite things that’s happened in the entire show.

If you haven’t listened to Night Vale yet, take 50 seconds to consider it. Please.

Cecil, in a serious and grave tone: “Old Woman Josie has not called, but, intern Dana said that Josie updated her Facebook page with an Instagram of some rune stones. Dana has been furiously translating these symbols and her best guess is that they say ‘They come in twos. You and come in twos. You and You. Kill your double.’ Cecil, continuing in a tone most people use to talk about cute cats: “There’s also a link to this amazing cat that keeps jumping in and out of boxes! And oh my god that is the cutest thing I have ever seen! Dana! You have got to post that on my wall. Oh my god, he loves those boxes so much!”

And now a look at the Community Calendar!

It appears that this week is being dedicated exclusively to an arena deathmatch between “Tumblr Sexymen”. Huh. Well, I have no idea what those are, but we wish our sexymen good luck in their deathmatch!

*distant voice*

Wait what?

*distant explanation*

Oh, oh I need to be there?

*distant agreement*

Well listeners! It appears that I am one of these sexymen and have to go to the arena myself!

This seems like a perfect time to go to the Weather.

by the way since there’s a night vale renaissance going on I’m going to recommend a few specific episodes from a bit later in the show:

  • Episode 133: Are You Sure? You should download this episode and listen to the whole thing. Then delete it and listen to the ending again. Then delete it and do it again.
  • Episode 199: Guidelines for Retrieval. One of my favorite episodes, it focuses on a person who got rid of all of their negative thoughts and feelings and emotions, and they’re struggling to figure out who they are without all of those, and struggling to determine if it’s worth it to get one of their negative memories back.
  • Episode 203: The Kareem Nazari Show. Features Adal Rifai (from magic tavern and hey riddle riddle) as Kareem, this episode has a normal guy who’s parents were taken into night vale and he’s trying to figure out what’s going on. He had a very creepy conversation with himself that I love to relisten to. If you listened to the whole show you can enjoy recognizing certain aspects (ex: the doubles) but still absolutely enjoyable going in blind.
  • Episodes 144-149: (The Blood/Space War) focuses on the war we’ve been hearing about in the background, but we didn’t know much about it until now. The character of the general is fascinating to me, and the idea that she can win the war but at the cost of everything she’s fighting for is great. Plus the resolution, how she has to bring the world back, is absolutely great.
