Theres no question that the line, “Give me back my girlhood, it was mine first” has always been an absolute BAR. It’s so heart breaking and painful…and I know most people think it’s about John Mayer…but I don’t.

I think that line is more about Scott and Scooter taking her masters. Essentially her ENTIRE early life that she wrote and sang about. They took it from her and she’s screaming at them to give it back to her.

I think it’s a VERY literal line. As long as they have her early work they’re going to own a piece of her and even though she’s re-recording, and taking it away from them, I know a part of her is NEVER going to feel at ease until she owns the originals as well.

GIVE ME BACK MY GIRLHOOD. IT WAS MINE FIRST…is her literally SCREAMING at them and the pain is so visceral.

For me It’s less about her virginity, as some (most) people think, and more about her entire life story that was stolen out from under her and has been sold and traded and shared with so many other people.

And, though the song obviously seems sexual to some people, and I understand why, it feels much more about having trust in someone and realizing later that while you thought they were trustworthy you actually were dancing with the devil and their betrayal leads you to question everything about yourself and what you thought you were and even your faith.

I honestly don’t think she’s singing about a romantic relationship. I think this one is about Scott in just the same way My Tears Ricochet is.

Though I could be wrong and I’m guessing we’ll never really know.

i’ve seen a few people make fun of the “and you were tossing me the car keys, ‘fuck the patriarchy’ keychain on the ground” lyric, but i actually think its a really interesting and deep lyric, and it comments a lot on the persona of taylor’s partner in this song. he puts up this pretence as the feminist guy who respects women, but we learn from the rest of all too well, and other songs on the album, that he has manipulative and disrespectful tendencies towards women: he dehumanises taylor into some trophy to reflect better onto him (all too well, ten minute version), ignores her needs and emotions and makes her feel ‘needy’ (all too well, ten minute version), the likelihood is that he also cheated on her (babe), and he lied to her as well (the moment i knew, all too well, ten minute version), not to mention the whole thing with younger women (“i’ll get older but your lovers stay my age”, all too well, ten minute version). the keychain being on the ground is pretty significant too — he dropped his façade and revealed who he truly was to taylor, and it led to the destruction of their relationship. idk i think its a pretty loaded lyric, actually.

I honestly could not be happier for @taylorswift right now!

Her historic win tonight is something that I’ve been hoping for since the album came out. Listening to it everyday, allowing it to help me escape from the pandemic, transporting me to magical woods and dreamlands, inspiring me constantly.

She deserves every bit of acclaim and recognition she gets tonight and I’m so proud of her.

Ok...I checked the tags and didn’t easily find anything about Mad Woman, and this theory, so forgive me if it’s already been put out there...

But here I was today, sitting on the floor in my living room, putting together a new stand for my plants, and listening to folklore. Vibing with all of the beauty on the album and then...I hear this.

And my brain slammed to a halt and I had to pick up my phone and ask...

Did @taylorswift just out either Scott and/orScooter as cheating on their wife/wives?!

I mean...I realized pretty fast that the song was about Scott...with the line “what do you sing when you drive home?”

And it was pretty obvious that the line “and women like hunting witches too” was pretty clearly about Demi and Yael and all the women who stood up for Scooter when Taylor called him out.

I’m just astounded that I haven’t seen anyone else talking about this.

Also...Mad Woman is such a simmering song. That’s the only real way to describe it. It just simmers, bubbling away, boiling softly.

At the moment...It’s my current favorite.

Edited to add...I just saw @zobothehob0 posted essentially the same dang thing...but more succinctly. But still!!!!

To be honest I can wait. I can wait if Netflix will delay the documentary until next year so instead of the old music they’ll use Taylor’s newly recorded ones. I can wait for all the delayed projects that she’s said until she deals with this. Maybe other artists can do the medley of her own songs on the AMAs. I can wait for all that - because I want Taylor to rerecord her music so she’d be FREE from these men. This is just a power play because they’re scared of her rerecording her music.

but god I wish it DIDN’T have to be like this because Taylor should be able to perform her OWN work.
