I really loved the juxtaposition between Rapunzel and Cass’ respective situations at the end of the episode. Raps has just been knocked out by some mystery potion and Corona has been taken. And yet when she wakes up, she’s got a bunch of people there all waiting for her (even Monty). Eugene is there to silently take her hand, and all of those people are standing behind her as she looks back at the palace, signifying that they’ve got her back. She’s got loved ones, friends, and allies. She’s got people who care about her, who are willing to help her fight to win back the kingdom. Meanwhile, Cass is the one in the palace, but she’s alone. She still has the moonstone, but Rapunzel managed to beat her not too long ago with the sundrop’s power. She’s taken the kingdom, but the streets are empty and the black rocks have destroyed or damaged everything. She sits on the throne, but the throne room itself is a shell of what it was, and it presides over a fallen kingdom.  Cass wanted to take everything from Raps, yet in the end, she’s still kind of left with nothing.

Fighting Style Observations - Adira + Hector

Hector has a habit of putting himself at a height advantage when he initiates fights with opponents that are taller (and possibly stronger) than he is. He does this consistently, and opening in this way negates height differences while forcing his opponents on the defensive.

It was also very interesting and a little disconcerting to see Adira fighting in this episode. In previous eps, she dodges and redirects her opponent’s force, but here, she just goes straight for Lance.

Adira’s style is much more passive, and she either lets opponents engage first or doesn’t aggress b/c she doesn’t want to fight them- she spent much of both her previous fights with her hands behind her back. I think this reflects that Cass is commanding her to attack- so she’s still really agile and graceful, but far more direct and aggressive.

Varian in this episode

In the beginning of the episode, Varian is going kinda ham with the amber weapon, a definite contrast to how he felt in Be Very Afraid about using the amber serum. In Be Very Afraid, he was terrified to use the serum on anything for fear of accidentally trapping someone in amber again. Here, he is actively trying to trap someone in amber again. (Maybe the first time he was more afraid of trapping Raps, who is the only way to get anyone out?) Anyway, he clearly isn’t afraid of the amber (as much) anymore.

He’s prepared to stop Cassandra if she’s attacking, but at first she’s not really attacking (Rapunzel, at least) so he holds his fire, only for Zhan Tiri to shoot the weapon without anyone else knowing…

Leaving Varian to be convinced that his invention malfunctioned, accidentally causing the someone else to be unintentionally trapped in amber because of him.

Good bye, Varian’s Progress On Getting Over His Fear.
