Tsukishima Kei was tired.
Stepping out into the cold, autumn evening, he rubs his hands together in an attempt to warm his frozen fingers. He thinks the blister he feels forming on his pinky toe was a sign for him to get a new pair of shoes, and this fact was solidified by the ache in his arch with each step he took towards the bus stop.
The day had been longer than most. Maybe if he hadn’t let his brother drag him to the gym and play pick-up games last night, then perhaps his body wouldn’t have felt so sore this morning. And if his body hadn’t been so sore in the morning, then he might have had the energy to grab coffee before work, possibly even pack himself a quick lunch. His mood would have presumably been at least mildly better throughout the day, and he had no doubt that he would have been able to continue on with his work swiftly, and efficiently.
But Tsukishima had learned at a young age that things don’t always work out for him the way he wants them to.
He wasn’t trying to be rude when you came to ask him about his tour schedule, but did you have to burst through his office door so loudly? He felt bad for 2.3 seconds as he watched your smile slowly melt into a frown, but he was way too irked when you rolled your eyes at him when he asked you to knock.
And it wasn’t his fault that he bought the last tuna onigiri from the food stand outside the museum. He forgot to pack lunch, and he was hungry, too. He probably shouldn’t have unwrapped and eaten it right in front of your face, but he doesn’t appreciate getting dirty looks for ordering a meal.
You’re newer to the museum, he knows that. As someone with seniority, he should be a little more helpful, and he could probably work on improving his sociability just a tiny bit, but his patience could only run so thin. It’s not like you ever listened to him anyway.
Should he have told you to figure out the volunteer’s schedule on your own because ‘even a monkey with a banana could do it on their own’? Okay, maybe not.
But did you have to snap at him to ‘keep the stick up his own ass and leave yours alone’ when he warned your tours took too long, and you’d end up leaving late? No, and that’s the last time Tsukishima will ever try to offer advice to a newbie.
Tsukishima sighed. He was tired.
His stomach growled out loud as he pressed the button for the crosswalk, slowly moving to rub his palm along his belly. He’s wondering if he has anything he could make at his apartment. When an image of a rotting bunch of scallions and moldy tomatoes dying in his refrigerator drawer comes to mind, he thinks he’s probably better off grabbing a bento from the convenience store down the street.
The light switches from red to green, and just before Tsukishima steps down from the curb, he feels an arm delicately wrap around his own.
“Hey, babe,” a familiar, annoyingly cheery voice greets him, and he has to stop himself from grimacing when he looks down and his eyes meet yours.
Tsukishima doesn’t think you’ve ever touched him once — not in the last six months since you’ve become his coworker. He had bowed when you were first introduced, and Tsukishima had never been one to hand out hugs or high fives.
He attributes the deep blush that spread across his cheeks to this fact, and not to the feeling of your chest pressed tightly against his side.

it felt like the whole universe decided today was the day to make your life absolutely miserable. it all began when you overslept for work, tsukki had already left for his job, and you forgot to put your work clothes in the dryer. then, showing up to work in damp, uncomfortable clothing 15 minutes late, your boss was not happy. the whole rest of the day they were nitpicky about anything you did. you were getting sick of it, you rarely were ever late and this is how they decided to treat you?
when your shift was finally over and your boss didn't have anything else for you to do, you bolted out of there. the only thing on your mind was going back home, cuddling with tsukki, and telling about each other's day. on the way back you had a raging headache, silently hoping it'll go away by the time you get back home.
when you did get home, you were met with silence. you took your shoes off with your head tilted slightly. shouldn't he be home by now?
speaking of the devil, you heard your phone ping with a notification.
tsukki <3: gonna be home late. don't wait up for me.
you rolled your eyes at the text, your frustration built up from earlier beginning to grow and grow. you just wanted this day to be over with, you just wanted to be held and told that everything was going to be okay.
not even bothering to begin making dinner or replying to your boyfriend's text, you headed to the bedroom and fell asleep as soon as your head hit the pillow.
you were startled awake a couple hours later to the front door slamming shut. you sat up, rubbing the tiredness from your eyes. you grumbled a bit to yourself when you saw you were still in your work clothes. when your vision became clear, you saw a very disturbed tsukishima standing at the bedroom door suddenly, frustration clear in his eyes.
"hi baby, how was your da-"
"why isn't dinner ready yet?"
you blinked at him, "i'm...i'm sorry?"
he crossed his arms while shooting you a glare, "i've had a pretty shit day today, and for you to not even prepare dinner or do anything except sleep for the rest of the day really shows how responsible you are."
all you could do was gape at him. you couldn't even process words in your brain from what he just said to you. he doesn't even know how your day went, so that gives him the right to act selfish?
"i'm sorry, your majesty, but i've had a pretty shit day, too. i was hoping to come home to you but you said you stayed late. i was exhausted from today so i took a nap," you scoffed at him.
"wow! must be nice to act like you can just push aside your priorities while others are out there working their asses off," he said sarcastically. you were beginning to get pretty fed up with his attitude, him not even giving you the benefit of the doubt.
you got up out of bed and stormed over to where he was, almost coming nose to nose with the blonde. "i don't know what crawled up your ass while you were at work, but i don't need this right now. you better get your fucking act together before-"
you let out a choked sob you'd been attempting to hold back. you closed your eyes and let out a shaky breath through your nose, "i'll go make dinner, since your head's too far up your ass to see how i'm on the brink of having a mental breakdown. now if you'll excuse me..."
tsukki's eyes widened at your statement. usually you'd be going back and forth with venomous remarks, trying your best to get under each other's skin. but you were almost quiet, and that scared him a tad bit more. he saw how you were still in your work clothes, most likely too tired to change out of them.
when he said nothing, you took that as your cue to drag yourself to the kitchen, but not before you felt a large hand grip your bicep gently. tsukki pulled you back in front of him, pulling you into a much needed hug. as soon as your head hit his chest, the tears fell free. you gripped the back of his shirt tightly, the pent up emotions from today soaking the former middle blocker's shirt.
tsukki rubbed his hands up and down your back while letting out a sigh, "i'm sorry, i should've realized instead of snapping at you. i love you and if you'd let me, i'd love to hear you tell me what happened. as long as i can tell you about mine?"
you pulled away from his chest, sniffling while tsukki brushed a couple stray tears from your precious face. he pressed a soft kiss to your forehead, hands playing with the ends of your hair.

The weary but determined eyes of the Karasuno Men’s Volleyball Team scurry the surroundings of their locker room. No one says a thing, unsure of how to answer their captain’s question.
How they didn’t notice Tsukishima wasn’t there was beyond them. He was tall and stood out too much with his lanky figure and blonde hair. It would be a crime to not notice him.
“No,” Sugawara says, glancing around once more just to make sure. “That’s odd. He’s usually one of the first to arrive.”
Daich sighs, rubbing his temples in annoyance. It’s not that he particularly minded having a teammate who came late. It was more that he hated the fact that he had to be the one to scold them if they were late. And all Daichi wanted was one training session that was peaceful (although that was hardly likely, considering the team was too chaotic.)
“Did he tell you anything, Yamaguchi?” Daichi asks, turning toward the timid pinch server, Tsukishima’s best friend. Yamaguchi’s eyes widen at the sudden burst of attention, as he was still in the middle of changing clothes for training.
“Uh, no?” He says unsurely, fitting his head through the hole of his shirt and smoothening down the creases. “He didn’t tell me anything about not attending today…”
There’s a silence that follows Yamaguchi’s words, no one knowing what to say. But it is only then that a spark lights up in Tanaka’s eyes, a mischievous grin forming on his lips.
“If he’s not here, then that must mean he’s late right,” he smirks, eyes gleaming naughtily. Nishinoya looks at his best friend’s face, immediately understanding what he was trying to say. Like clockwork, his own face lights up with a playful demeanor, already on board with Tanaka’s plan.

Haikyuu headcanons please! Tsukishima, Kageyama, and Nishinoya hear a bench-warming teammate talking about their s/o, and then jokes "if he doesn't marry her, I WILL'. Their reaction?
At first, Kei isn’t really paying attention to what they’re saying, not really bothered about people talking about him or his girlfriend because he knows what is and isn’t true about them and their relationship.
However, when he hears one of the benchwarmers say that, he can’t help but smirk. As annoying as you could be to him sometimes, Kei knew that you were a catch and, even though he won’t admit it all that often, he’s lucky to have you with him instead of someone else.
He’ll probably turn his gaze towards the benchwarmers and smirk devilishly at them, snickering softly and adjusting his glasses.
“Bold of you to assume you even stand a chance talking to her. She’s already spoken for, so look somewhere else.”
Almost everyone is surprised to hear him say that, though the third years are grinning from ear to ear because finally this Salt Boi has shown some strong feelings towards his girlfriend and is standing his ground by her side. Though everyone else is either screaming or patting Kei on the back for stepping up like a man and emphasizing that you are his.
As soon as he heard his girlfriend’s name mentioned by the benchwarmers, he’s all ears. Unlike Tsukishima, he doesn’t like people talking about him or his girlfriend. He thinks that if you have a problem with him, his girlfriend, or their their relationship then you can come talk to him personally about it.
But instead of hearing anything bad, he hears them talking about what a babe his girlfriend his, talking about her body and personality and hair and the like and it only makes him angrier.
No one else should be admiring you like that. Only him. He didn’t care how selfish it was to think something like that, but he just didn’t like the fact that other people liked you and admired you the way he did. He’d never admit it but he always fears losing you to someone else because he has a few insecurities himself.
However, his breaking point is when he hears one of them say: “If he doesn’t marry her, I sure as hell will. She’s way too hot to pass up.”
Instantly he feels his blood boil and he whips around to glare at the guy who said it. “I am going to marry her, so back off and worry about your lack of action in the game.”
Saying that would earn him a bit of scolding from Daichi, but he meant what he said. He was going to marry you one day. He loved you more than volleyball, and that was saying something, and he’d be damned if he lost you to some benchwarmer.
Like Tsukishima, Nishinoya doesn’t give a crap about what people say about him and his girlfriend because he knows the truth, but he will defend his girlfriend’s honor more so than his own.
He makes sure to listen in on their conversation every so often to make sure they’re not saying anything too nasty about his girlfriend, but even entirely hears one of the benchwarmers say: “Gosh, she’s such a smoking hot babe. I swear, if shortass doesn’t marry her, I’ll be the next man to take her hand.”

and when you go to deny it, he’s capturing your lips with his then whispers a “i’ll show you what jealous looks like”

probably knows you’re trying to make him jealous and waits it out to see how long you can play this little game
doesn’t phase him when you try to make him jealous with his teammates
but if you do it with someone from another team oH boy you’re in for it
will literally pick you up over your shoulders and tell whoever you’re talking to to “kindly fuck off”
