So far, I've only talked about how the end of ROTT let me down, but let's talk about one of the best scenes in the movie and you'll definitely agree with that.
Oh Claire’s response when she got asked to “smile” XD

This may not be the most popular opinion but I don’t think the tales of arcadia series has been good since Trollhunters…
So I’m not very surprised by how the film turned out.
I will always be a fan of trollhunters though :’) I think the ending of trollhunters by itself was perfect.
yyeaahh…honestly I kinda agree 😩
Trollhunters was fantastic. Not perfect (as nothing is) but very very good. Lovable characters, thought-out writing (there’s foreshadowing for trollJim as early as season 1 like yooo), real consequences, actually impactful moments, good humor…it’s just a quality show man.
3Below was…..ok as its own thing. It wasn’t bad, but it definitely wasn’t up to Trollhunters’s standards imo, and I never felt nearly as attached to any of the characters or story elements as I did with Trollhunters. As far as its place it ToA as a whole, it feels the most detached from everything else. It’s just there for a little worldbuilding with “oh yeah aliens are a thing and they have good technology” and…that’s kinda it. ^^;
Wizards was also ok, but definitely felt rushed (which to be fair was in large part exec’s fault for forcing it to be only 10 episodes, but it is what it is). There are also a few things here and there that feel a little inconsistent with what was established in Trollhunters, and also retconning trollJim was very dumb sorry ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Neither 3Below nor Wizards were ~bad~ but they just didn’t live up to Trollhunters, y’know??
And then of course Rise of the Titans was just a dumpster fire lol. There were a few cool elements but the pacing was whack, everyone felt out of character, and that ending man…
The ending of Trollhunters was definitely the most solid by far. It was bittersweet and a little open-ended, sure, but it was SATISFYING. It brought everything together nicely while still leaving fans with plenty of wiggle room to project their own interpretations on what happens next.
3Below felt so inconsequential in ToA as a whole that I couldn’t give less of a crap about its ending lol
And then Wizards and Rise of the Titans both ended on retcons that just…no. Wizards with reverting Jim to human form, which cheapened the weight of Trollhunters’s finale where it was established that this was supposed to be a permanent change that Jim was willing to undergo despite the struggles in order to save the world because he’s selfless like that and felt like such a cool culmination to his arc.
So Wizards strips away some of Jim’s development, which is frustrating enough….followed by Rise of the Titans LITERALLY STRIPPING AWAY ALL OF EVERYONE ELSE’S DEVELOPMENT by resetting time and putting everyone back at literal square one last-minute, effectively retconning the ENTIRE franchise like?? Excuse me??? Wizards may have cheapened the Trollhunters finale, but RotT cheapened THE WHOLE FLIPPIN’ SERIES
If there’s one good thing I can say about the end it’s that I felt very much in the frustrated minority being disappointed by the end of Wizards….but everyone was disappointed by the end of RotT, so at least there’s some solidarity there lol
You took the words right out of my mouth and I will always live for Trollhunters
Honestly I would be somewhat okay with with the timeline reset and even giving Toby the amulet if I wasn’t also super invested every other character
Jim and Toby rights 100% but not at the cost of everyone’s character development. I don’t think Jim would do that to his friends.
Jim would give up the world for Toby yes, but he also cares about other people a lot. That’s what makes him such a good hero.
He answers every call.
Yes. I’m all for Toby getting a chance to shine, but it shouldn’t come at the expense of Jim’s legacy.
Lifting Toby up should not require dragging Jim down, but that’s exactly what this ending did. Not to mention that yeah, it was just generally incredibly out of character.
Ok WHAT? WAS? THAT ENDING?!?
