It’s not that I mindlessly hate Miraculous. It was an extremely promising show. Only, trying to articulate why I (and so many others) find it profoundly disappointing from a creative standpoint is important.
Mediocre cartoons like Miraculous, or even downright bad series and films and whatnot, are tremendously useful teaching material, a neat series of counter-examples for you to learn from, in terms of worldbuilding, plotting or character writing. Shows are made up. Characters are made up. Understanding how they work or do not work can be really interesting, and dare I say, fun!
Why doesn’t Adrien work as a character? Or Marinette? Why is the whole Guardians thing not particularly enthusing? What is it with nonwhite characters being sometimes represented the way they are? What is it with the romance in that show?
Well, if you think about that for long enough, you might find some answers, and subsequently learn how not to fall into the same pitfalls as Miraculous did when you write your own thing. Likewise, you will be able to anticipate similar creative decisions you may not like in other works.
Saying “X is garbage” alone isn’t very good criticism. Being truly able to explain why you (subjectively, there is no objective appreciation of a piece of media, no matter what anyone might tell you) think that is, in good faith, thanks to a close reading of the text, on the other hand…
Knowing what you don’t like, learning how to identify it and articulate it in other terms than “thing bad” can allow for constructive conversations with fellow fans that may not agree with you. It can help you become more aware of your own tastes as well!
Criticise the hell out of the things you watch, be it positively or negatively! All criticism isn’t negative! From an etymological standpoint, criticism comes from the ancient Greek krinein, “to judge”. Not “to spit on”. And, well, you can have little a positive judgement, as a treat! There’s nothing worse than a strictly passive attitude towards what you watch/read/listen to. Absolutely no piece of media should be exempt from being looked at critically, not even a “dumb cartoon”.
Yes! For me it’s like a writing prompt
It gives you an idea AND the added bonus of what NOT to do!
