This is my official Batfam Magical Girl AU Masterpost (everyone clapped)

(image updated: 9/21/24)

I’m going to do a brief overview and then go into more details for those interested.

Bruce being from old money (and apparently being connected to Camelot) inherited a mysterious mineral with unknown properties. In its raw form it’s very unassuming, but when cut like gemstones and added to accessories it can be harnessed into a tool. By altering the mineral into a wearable item it allows the magic within to be channeled. The magic of the mineral connects with its wielder to create an outfit and (typically) a weapon. These outfits do not grant the wearer special abilities outside of the transformation and the weapon, but when worn the wearer is granted (what is basically) hammerspace and a nearly impenetrable outfit. The uniform granted is not something they can alter the appearance of but will change gradually overtime to reflect how the wielder has grown.

This mineral will henceforth be known as Arcanium. It operates on Kryptonite logic in that it’s— allegedly— super rare but also shows up whenever the plot needs it. (I’m aware it shares a name with a card game, but I wanted my Kryptonite spoof)

Martha Wayne unknowingly started the cycle by turning— what she thought was a rare gemstone— into a brooch. She died shortly after having it made and Alfred held onto it in her memory. Like canon Bruce goes on his journey of self-exploration to train. When he comes back he enacts his plan the way he does in Batman: Year One, where he goes out in basically just make-up, and it goes poorly. He wanders his manor trying to formulate a strategy and is drawn to his parent’s room and finds his mother’s brooch. Cue the first magical girl transformation. From there he alters the brooch to fit his bat aesthetic and the Batman Brooch is born.

Dick comes into his life the same way as canon. Bruce takes him in as a ward, Dick tries to track down Zucco on his own, etc. Bruce decides to use the other raw sample of Arcanium to turn into a second magical artifact. He lets Dick pick the theme, and thus the Robin Pendant is born. The rest is history.

batfam potluck was so much fun last year, let’s do it again :) #batfampotluck if you wanna bring something. everyone’s invited; repeats, nonbats, and all :))

I don’t really headcanon any bats as great or awful cooks, they just can’t be bothered. jason pulls something elaborate once or twice a year and then goes back to Sustenance

Would you rather be trapped in a room with Riddler for 24 hours or trapped in a room with Two Face for 24 hours?

Hmmm ok this is difficult

See I have a bone to pick with Riddler because of how much backtalk he gave me in the Arkham games but I feel like if we’re trapped in a room with none of his toys…. he’d be less dangerous

Two-Face is a gamble because I wouldn’t mind being trapped in a room with Harvey but Two-Face…. idk

For my safety (but forgoing my sanity) I’ll say Riddler

When someone accuses me of not reading comics because I get confused with the 74 different canons and timelines.

Love the idea that Gordan has known Bruce’s identity for years now because he is a detective afterall and arguably you don’t need to be as good as Batman to figure it out. So he’s just known and kept it to himself and he pretends for Bruce’s sake. I don’t think Gordon is an esp good actor but he’s very good at evading things he doesn’t know how to approach. When Bruce does finally reveal himself Gordon’s lack of reaction is suspicious and the truth comes out.

(this is based off 2022 Batman but can be applicable other places) Going along with this thought I also really like when Gordan and Bruce are friends simply because they’ve worked together for so long, and indirectly Bruce has let him in on a part of his life only his immediate family sees (that part being Batman). While in costume Bruce can hide most of his humanity but there’s always going to be small things that can’t be hidden. Gordon has seen him investigating enough to know his patterns and see beyond the cowl (metaphorically). Esp when Bruce was first starting out, Gordon is already a fairly seasoned detective and it only took a few investigations for him to pick up that this guy was young and that was the first time Gordan truly saw Bruce as human.

Neither would realize they were actually friends until embarrassingly late. It would take like a throw away comment from Dick.

a white witch design I did for school

(based mostly off her first description in The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe)

I’m studying game and entertainment design (my major is digital media) which means we do a fair amount of concept design work as well as 3D modeling 👍

timkon fans we do NOT talk about this parallel enough like

what do you mean in one world kon died and tim adopted his colors to honor and mourn him

and in another world, tim is the one who died and kon adopted his robin mantle in all but name and moved to gotham and started working with batman in order to honor and mourn tim.

like...wow. they are so normal about each other :)

Following on from the previous ask about Bruce’s look if you don’t really want to do a cowl maybe you could just add some sharp bat ears or smth to make the silhouette feel more Batman while still staying on the current theme since the ears are the main feature of the cowl other than the fact it covers everything

Maybe something like what I did for Duke?

I quickly drew this just over the top after thinking over the last conversation

It's ok if you don't want advice and you can totally ignore this if you want. But maybe Batman's design feels off because his outfit feels too loose and almost casual, like training attire instead of actual tactical gear or armor. Pair that with Batman lacking a mask in this draft he might feel uncanny because he looks vulnerable and casual when he's usually so hyper vigilant. If anything you could probably make his outfit more tight like the sailor scout tops or Dick's top and add pleating to the cape to mimic sailor scout skirts while still conveying a sharper shape language for Batman as a way to fit into his character. Especially since adding sharper angles to Batman could contrast nicely to his kids since his support has really helped soften their edges, at least in Dick, Cassandra and Damien's cases. I hope this helps you out a bit, I'd hate to come off rude to you. 😅

Don’t worry, you’re good.

Yeah I agree the shape language should be sharper. Truthfully I’m not at all happy with the face but I promised myself I would leave it alone for my sanity. I’m gonna do some face studies.

As for the costume you can’t really see it in the wip picture but I’m trying to go in a more…. fantasy direction for him. I like this idea of playing off the knight thing but I don’t what to draw armor and it’s been done to death with Bruce. So I started using costumes from the lotr movies as a reference, because I thought it fit nicely. But I want to keep the style flat so I was trying super hard not to just add a bunch of costume elements, but right now it’s just feeling bland to me. It’s hard bc his original outfit is so iconic. My approach for most of the others was asking “what elements can I change to fit this other aesthetic” but with his original outfit there’s not a lot to change (without it looking silly.) So my approach has become how can I adapt this costume to another silhouette entirely but have it still read. (Which is sadly much harder) I think you’re right about adding something sharper to contrast, but I don’t know if I want to go in a skin tight direction the way I did for the others. The cowl and masks I’ve decided still exist but I don’t love drawing them hence why none of them have had one in this au. Right now I’m just following that trend but I’m also going to design that down the road. Perhaps the cowl is what I’m missing though and it will tie everything together.

It might have to be one of those things I let go and try again later, it just feels like I’m close to landing on something but I don’t know what yet.

I’m so sorry but I feel this in my soul… Bruce is a boy dad. That’s what he was built for. He loves Cass ofc he does but his mentality towards her and the rest of his kids is “they can handle themselves,” except maybe Damian. Bruce is saying things like “walk it off” and that’s boy dad behavior. I truly think he would be so awkward if he had to raise a household full of girls. Not sexist just awkward. Bruce has a hard time socializing (on a deeper level not stuff for the press) with people he doesn’t see himself in. Which is why he gets on fairly easy with Cass. However I think if he had the time he would be a fierce PTA parent. In another lifetime the school faculty loved and feared him. Versus Gordan who wanted so badly to be a boy dad, was forced to be a girl dad, and was converted over time.
