Moffat’s Women - Clara Oswin Oswald
Clara Oswin Oswald is curious and clever. She pursues what she wants or what catches her interests with unbridled resolve - whether it is running after the Doctor after their first meeting and exploring the invisible staircase or becoming a governess against all the odds and societal expectations. She remains largely undaunted by danger or inexplicable events, not because she’s above being scared, but because she enjoys proving her intellect and is delighted by the new and strange. Having parts of her memory erased is not something she runs from when she can stick around and be amused by Strax’s inevitable mistake. Vastra’s one word test or the Doctor’s challenge to figure out his plan are not impositions, they are her idea of fun.
Clara has a keen understanding of how to fit in the most different surroundings and capture people with her personality. She’s the wise and capable governess with Captain Latimer; the spunky barmaid at the Rose & Crown and storyteller, confidante, friend and educator to Franscesca and Digby. Maybe it is unsurprising that she takes to the Doctor’s world like a fish to the water. It is the high before the (literal) fall. But even dying does not bring her to her knees, as she embraces the idea of adventures through time, convinces Captain Latimer to express care for his children… and sends the Doctor on a journey full of surprises.
"The thing about Clara is she thinks the show is called Clara. She has no idea she’s number two in the credits, which is why we did that joke in Death in Heaven. She’s got a high opinion of herself, not in a conceited way, but in a correct way. She knows she’s extremely clever and capable, and she doesn’t feel like she particularly fits in the world that she lives in." - Steven Moffat
