Can you see any way in-character Jegulus could happen? Or hypothetically if you *had* to make them get together (pre- or post-Voldemort pinterest board), how would you do it and what would their relationship be like? And how do you think Sirius would react?

So for me, the most random ships can work if the characterisation still feels similar to canon. And while we don’t see Regulus on screen, there’s enough to extrapolate from and build a picture of a passionate, slightly obsessive, very proud, but insecure person.

And we also have enough to build a picture of James as a coddled, brilliant, privileged boy who had a soft spot for under dogs but could also be cruel and arrogant.

I think Jegulus could start as enemies to lovers where they fight about the war (but are really fighting over Sirius’s love) .

And they end up having muddy, hate sex on the quidditch pitch after having a dick measuring contest and a punch up during a quidditch practice.

But the key stumbling block to a full relationship isn’t Sirius clutching his pearls, it’s their diametrically opposed world views.

According to Kreacher, Regulus loved to yap about how much he wanted to dominate muggles and muggleborns and bring wizards out of hiding. And while James is atrocious during SWM he literally says he would never call anyone a ‘you know what.’ So he can’t even say the word, that it is safe to say (based on extrapolations from canon) Regulus was throwing around casually.

From what we can glean, both of them are passionate and hold these views so strongly that good dick game is not going to persuade them to fundamentally change their morals.

As for Sirius’s reaction I think he’d be perplexed that they fucked and maybe he’d be upset because he wants a separation of church and state (his family from his friends). But I don’t see him being ‘dramatic’ about it or caring about his delicate brother’s honour.

And that brings me to my final point, from what we know of Regulus he is far more like Bellatrix than anyone acknowledges. He wouldn’t be the passive, delicate one in the relationship and when this is paired with James being desi this gets into weird colonial fantasy territory.

How I feel about James:

James is basically my ideal man. That doesn’t mean he’s perfect but... (fuck it, yes, he is, he completely is).

I hadn’t realised it I think until @lizardcookie pointed it out, but my idea of James is that he had has a very high moral code of chivalry, I don’t mean open the door for me, I mean having high morals/ sense of fairness, and that if you give your word you keep it, that he would never even consider betraying his friends in his wildest dreams, that sort of thing? Or think twice about risking his life and fighting for what is right? And a bit old fashioned, but not in a misogynist way, I just mean maybe in how he speaks, the music he likes, because his parents were much older and he had no siblings...

I think he started off being a bit of a show off - imagine having no siblings, with older parents, DYING to meet other kids his age, wanting desperately to impress and being extremely good at Quidditch and academically in school? He was a pain, basically (a likeable pain).

But what other people like Lily couldn’t see was that as well as being an immature git, he was intensely loyal and kind to his friends- that he was protective af of his friends and worried about Sirius and Remus and Peter for all different reasons. He is extremely accepting of people just as they are, he is not at all prejudiced - see how he and the others accept Remus without any issue after the find out his secret- and so he clashed immediately with the mini Death Eaters in school. He found the bloody lack of action in Hogwarts by teachers on issues like racial slurs, and attacks on muggleborns like Mary, infuriating and wrong and he took them on and didn’t care if he got into trouble. 

I bet hearing a bit about Sirius’ home life and the fact that without doubt the mini Death Eaters tried to attack/goad Sirius made James mad, and activated his White Knight Syndrome (he needs rescuing from his need to rescue others - yeah, look, I find that an endearing quality in James’ case, taking in the strays - the disowned heir, the werewolf, the lonely mediocre boy).

However despite being a gifted wizard he didn’t invent cruel hexes like Sectumsempra or Levicorpus like Snape (even if he once used the second one on Snape - and who else did he learn it from if not from the very boy who invented it? I’m looking at you, Severus!!) - the marauders are described by teachers as the equivalent of the Weasley Twins, not vicious thugs. He invented a complicated map with his friends (omg what fucking nerds) and they spent ages becoming illegal animagi just to help their friend. Risking Azkaban.

He rescued Snape from Remus during the infamous Prank and I think that was a major turning point for him. He didn’t think twice about saving his enemy’s life. But it made him grow up, fast. He deflated his head. Dumbledore made him Head Boy so he was definitely a safe pair of hands, commanded respect, trustworthy, and popular enough to fill the role. And Lily started to see that her opinion of him had been poisoned by Snape over many years (Snape was jealous, canon alludes to the fact that he saw Lily watching James, so I think Snape guesses she fancied James before Lily did!!) and that he had also changed a lot... and the rest is history!

Sirius Black, except they were so close they were like brothers, and I adore everything about them, Prongsfoot all the way! so I also this in a way Remus was his best mate? And we get very little info about these two in the books which is sad.

My unpopular opinion about this character:

I imagine him as having great pecs and beautiful biceps and fine forearms, a gorgeous chin and mischievous hazel eyes and... no, I can’t think of anything unpopular.

Ok fine, I think he would have gone mental and lost it with Remus for believing Sirius was the spy?

A headcanon fact:

I get why you’re anti-Snape, but I feel that it needs more recognition that he and James were more similar than people act. I mean, they were both in love with Lily from a very young age. James pestered her for ages and was a dick to her best friend (Snape), but Snape didn’t do anything. His patronus was hers, and she was the only one who made him feel acceptable and was his only true friend. People always (see what I did there) write of Snape/Lily as “obsession”, but I think he did love her.1/2

Yeah, he called her mudblood, and that was horrible. But he begged her for forgiveness, he hadn’t just lost the girl he loved, he lost his best friend. Personally, I think Lily should’ve given him another chance, but regardless, how much do you think it would hurt to see your best friend and love end up with the boy who bullied you- for👏no👏reason👏- for years, then to have a baby with him. Harry was the symbol of how Snape fucked up. (2/3)

And while that does by no means justify Snape’s treatment of Harry, or anyone else for that matter, it was a constant reminder of how he said one word and lost everything. People say he should’ve let go of his “obsession” and move on. James was obsessed with Lily too. Would he move on? Would he not destroy himself with guilt if he called her a mudblood? Snape isn’t the best man, I know that. But maybe he isn’t the worst either. (3/3)

((OOC: Okay this has been sat in my inbox for a few days and I haven’t had the time to perfectly craft my response, but I’m off work with a fever so here we go. 

I hear you, I do… But SO much of the content within this ask distresses me. Namely the fact that Lily should forgive Snape for calling her a RaCiAl SlUr just because he begged? like? no? Now, I am white, and obviously I have never had a racial slur thrown at me. I do however have experience with homophobic slurs being thrown my way, and I do not give a shit how much someone is sorry for doing it. In using words like that they have attacked a fundamental part of my being, something I can’t (and shouldn’t have to) change, and they’ve done it knowing how much it hurts. They’ve done it because of how much it hurts, and so if I were Lily fuck no I wouldn’t forgive him. He deserved to lose his best friend over that. 

Moving on to the love Vs obsession point you made. I do think that Snape believed he loved Lily, but that doesn’t mean his love wasn’t obsessive, and the fact he believed he loved her doesn’t make it healthy. The fact is she didn’t love him back, and for that reason (and that reason alone) he should have backed the fuck off. Here’s a real life example: Lucy was my best friend for three years before we got together. a few months in to that friendship I realised I had feelings for her. When I first hinted this to Lucy she told me ‘not even if I was drunk and someone payed me’ … which I think you’ll all agree is a pretty concise ‘No’. 

Now, that wasn’t an awesome thing to hear but did I get aggressive? did I throw slurs around or join a Nazi cult? Obviously Fucking not because that’s a completely whack reaction?!! Instead I backed off, we remained best friends, I continued to share everything with her, we laughed together, grew together, cried together. I had relationships with other people who I loved very much. I didn’t obsess over her, or disrespect her in any way!! because I love her, but also because I’m a decent fucking human being. While I’m on this point: Lucy’s ex never bullied me but I didn’t get on with her particularly well. Yes it would have absolutely sucked to watch her say ‘I do’ to someone I thought was an asshole… Still wouldn’t have made me throw around slurs though. Still wouldn’t have made me a Nazi. 

See the point I’m trying to make? 

Moving on to James Potter (and I will try not to be too biased here) James was a twat when he was younger, yes. There is evidence in both the books and the films that he was incredibly cruel to Snape. Here’s the difference though: He changed and from what we know became a good person, Snape became a Nazi. Do you see why there isn’t a whole lot of room for comparison here in my mind?

Harry wasn’t a symbol of the ways Snape fucked up because Lily didn’t love him. His love was unrequited. Severus Snape didn’t lose Lily Evans to James Potter because she wasn’t his to lose. To think you have ownership over someone just because you love them is messed up on a number of levels. But to punish that persons orphaned child eleven years later breaks new ground on the levels of fucked up and cruel a person can be. 

To recapitulate: Snape may not be the best man. He definitely is the worst.
