Here's a snippet:

“I feel a bit like the Owl and the Pussy Cat.” Lily commented as James rowed. “Except our boat is black not green.” He raised a quizzical eyebrow at her. “I haven’t a clue what you’re on about there Evans.” “You don’t know the poem by Edward Lear? It’s a classic for children.” Lily blushed deep crimson, a hand pressed to her mouth.  “Considering I’m guessing it’s a muggle poem and I grew up on the likes of ‘Babbity Rabbity and her Cackling Stump’ I’m afraid you’re going to have to enlighten me. Am I the owl or the cat?”  “Depends on if you’re planning to propose or not.” Lily shrugged. James instantly stopped rowing.

@jilychallenge | Partner: @theresthesnitch | January 2023: Firsts, Promises and New Beginnings

Prompt: First dance at their wedding + “I made a promise and I intend to keep it” / “I just meant to tell you that I’m having trouble breathing, with you, looking like that”

One and One is Two

James had not been able to stop beaming at his new wife since the second he saw her coming down the aisle. In short, Lily Evans was breathtaking, there was simply no other word for it. There was never a doubt in his mind that she would be, as she had always been beautiful, but there was just something about seeing her coming toward him wrapped in white lace that had made his heart skip several beats. He had giddily run through his vows so quickly he’d probably tripped over most of them, not that she had seemed to mind in the slightest. Lily was alight with happiness when he slid her wedding band onto her finger. Officially taking her from Evans to Potter. Their friends and family had cheered in delight and thrown flower petals above their heads as they’d marched triumphantly back down the aisle hand in hand. Well, for the most part anyway. There was the glaring aspect of the empty seats in the front row. Where Lily’s family should have been. In contrast with the already small number gathered to celebrate their union, their absence was stark.

But today James would not dwell on that fact. It could not form a stain on today of all days in his memory, and he’d be damned if he let it dampen hers. This would be the happiest day of his life he knew, it could not be tainted with disappointment, grief or any other negative emotion. On another future day, James would easily find it in him to be angry at Petunia for doing this to his beloved on her special day. Especially knowing how much it would have meant to her. He’d been nothing but civil at Petunia’s wedding to Vernon despite their previous misgivings. Would it have been so hard for her to just show up for her own flesh and blood? To show her the same kindness? If for the ceremony if nothing else? But if James had learnt anything since meeting Sirius Black, it was that you had the option to choose your own family. Those who Lily needed to be here were, her chosen family, and that was all that counted.

“Please allow me to introduce to the dance floor, for the very first time; Mr and Mrs Potter!” Sirius’ voice had come booming over a roar of applause. He’d been a fantastic bestman and MC for the evening. Using all the power and grace his presence allowed, for controlling the small crowd seated at their respective tables.

James led his new bride by the hand to the centre of the dance floor, before wrapping one arm around her waist and pulling her in close to him. He attempted to murmur sweet nothings to her. But his breath tickled her ear and Lily giggled like a schoolgirl.

“What was that?” she asked, pulling away slightly so she could hear him better as they swayed together to the music.

“I just meant to tell you that I’m having trouble breathing, with you, looking like that.”

“Always with the charm, Potter.” Lily teased playfully. “You’re quite dashing yourself in dress robes. Though I think they’ll look much better later… off.”

“Don’t you know it, Mrs Potter.” He leaned in and gave her a few long and lazy kisses.

They whirled their way around the dancefloor, perfectly in sync with one another, despite the little practice they’d been able to squeeze in between missions for the Order. Lily flush against him, pressed chest to chest, cheeks rosy thanks to champagne and the warm evening air. If he could freeze time and go back to a blissful moment in his life James knew it would be this one he’d choose. A room full of people, and yet it was like no one else was there. Just the two of them in step. Merlin, he hoped Peter caught a good photograph of this so he could look back on it as he grew old and withered. Show it to his own children and maybe even grandchildren. Their younger selves constantly dancing, twirling and laughing on a page.

The music slowly began to fade, signalling it would soon be time for the next dance. Which customarily would have been a father-daughter dance. It was the first time James saw the corner of Lily’s mouth twitch from smile to frown. It was barely a second but it was noticeable nonetheless. He’d promised her their nuptials would run smoothly despite what raged around them, and that he’d have her swept off her feet. There was no way James was going to let that slip now if he could help it. Over her shoulder, James signalled wordlessly to Remus, who rose from his seat and hurried along to the table where the older Potters were seated.

As the last melody died, Fleamont Potter took to the floor. His elegant mauve dress robes flowing out behind him. He approached the happy couple and bowed politely to Lily as James handed her off to him.

“I made a promise and I intend to keep it Mrs Potter. I know it’s not customary, but I do hope dad will suffice.”

Tears welled in Lily’s eyes that threatened to fall in heavy droplets. James dabbed at them with his pocket handkerchief to save ruining her makeup.

“Dad will more than suffice. I love you both.”

Fic: Love is the Law

@clare-with-no-i

Response to @clarewithnoi’s november jily prompt challenge: prompt #1

Dialogue: “I think you’re severely underestimating how long I’ve waited for this.”

Song: Chasing Pavement, Adele

Snippet:

The proposal is romantic the way all acts of rebellion are romantic.
It is as much a call to action as a declaration of love.
It is fat with hope, rife with desperation, laced with frustration, resolved to the high probability of heartbreak. It is fevered, wholehearted, inevitable.
It starts with breakfast.

hi i absolutely love your work and was wondering if you knew of or could write something along the lines of “you didn’t think he’d wait forever did you?”

Confession: I started this prompt ages ago and could not get it to come together—until today, when @efkgirldetective posted Prompt #10 of her Summer of Jily, and my brain exploded with how to finish this. So yes, this one-shot is a slightly evil, angsty twist on what was no doubt meant to be a fluffy, lovey prompt 😂 Rated T to M? (I'm bad at these.)
Without further ado, a mashup of "You didn't think he'd wait forever, did you?" + 🌻 + "you're the only thing I'll wait around for." (I promise it ends happy 😘)

Waiting

October air nips my cheeks, chills my bones, as I stroll down the High Street arm-in-arm with Mary.

“I definitely need to restock on sugar quills,” she adds to her growing list.

“Agreed.” They’ve become my bad habit to get me through long Arithmancy lectures, but it’s not like I’m planning on stopping anytime soon. “And maybe Tomes and Scrolls?” I add. “Dory’s birthday is coming up, we could look for a gift while she’s on her date.”

Mary lights up beside me. “Oh, that’s a good idea! Wait, hold on, let’s peek inside Madame Puddifut’s. She left before us, remember?”

I acquiesce as Mary tugs me in a half-skip toward the teashop’s window, wide and foggy around the edges.

Hogsmeade might as well have turned into the Arctic for the way my body freezes just then.

“Ooooh!” Mary squeals, “There they are, look! Merlin, she’s smitten—”

But I don’t see Dorcas; I can’t. Now that my eyes have latched on, they won’t move anywhere else, no matter how badly my roiling, sinking stomach wants them to.

“It’s not a big deal we just had sex like four times and I may have said I love you once”

This one was fun. We love a james that gets ahead of himself

“It’s not a big deal. We just had sex like four times. And I may have said I love you. Once.”

James could tell that Sirius wasn’t buying his bullshit by the look on his face.

“You slept with, Lily?” Sirius asked, raising his brow, probably thinking that he should have heard about this before now. James shrugged.

“Only a couple times.”

“Four times.” Sirius corrected.

“Four times.” James agreed contritely.

“And you told her that you loved her?”

James sighed, pushing his glasses into his hair so he could cover his face with his hands. “Yes.” He muttered.

“Were you sloshed?”

James folded further into himself. “No.” He said quietly. He wasn’t even sure if Sirius heard him, but he didn’t ask James to repeat himself, so he must have worked it out.

“For fucks sake, mate. You met her last month.”

“I know.” James said.

“You love her?”

“That’s what I told her.”

“But is it true?”

James was quiet. “It can’t be, right?”

“James?”

“I think it’s true!”

“Well shit.”

“Well shit.” James concured. “What do I do?”

“Can you do anything?” Sirius laughed, but there was no humor to it. “Is she still speaking to you? How did you accidentally tell her that you love her?”

“It’s just slipped out!” James raked a hand through his hair and sighed. “I think she’s still talking to me. She responded to my last text anyway.”

“What did she say when you-”

“She didn’t say anything,” James interrupted. “Her eyes got kind of wide and then I fled.”

“You fled? Like out through the fire escape?”

James pressed his lips together. “No, I used the bloody door.”

“Well, this entire thing makes no sense, so you can’t blame me for asking.”

“I suppose you have a point.”

“What are you going to do?”

“I just asked you that!”

“Right.” Sirius nodded solemnly. “I suppose we go ring shopping now?”

James reached over and swatted Sirius’s arm, which only made his friend start laughing. “This isn’t a joke, Sirius!”

“I know,” Sirius reached out and shoved James. “But why is this the least surprising thing you’ve ever done?”

“I’ve never told a girl I love her before. You have to be at least a little bit surprised.”

“But I’m not. You’ve always been an all or nothing kind of bloke. You met me and decided that we were best friends six minutes later, you picked up a football and decided that you were going to play professionally probably instantaneously. You saw Lily and immediately fell for her. It tracks.”

James chewed on the inside of his cheek and thought this over. Sirius settled back onto the couch and unpaused his game while James was thinking.

“Alright.” James nodded. “I guess that makes sense. I still probably should have kept it to myself.”

“Make her some of your famous blondies. She’ll tell you that she loves you too.”

James scoffed and pulled out his phone.

“You’re texting your mum for the recipie, aren’t you?”

“I mean, it’s a good plan, Pads.” He pushed himself off the couch and started toward the kitchen.

“Hey James,” Sirius paused his game again and looked at James. “I love you.”

“I was going to share with you already, Sirius.”

“Just making sure,” Sirius winked at him.

It was unfortunate, really, that the only path to his goal ran right through Lily Evans.

Because Lily Evans was Slughorn’s favorite student by a mile. Therefore, she was the only one who could command Slughorn’s attention so completely that James could have enough time to lob a stink bomb right into Rosier’s bubbling potion. And Rosier desperately needed to be dung bombed. So, Lily was the only answer.

This was rather problematic because when it came to Slughorn, Lily was absolutely no fun at all.

“Why must you insist on asking me to help you dupe the one professor in this school who actually believes in me?” Lily hissed across her cauldron at James.

“Because you’re the only one in the year who’s been able to charm him on pure talent alone,” James whispered back, his eyes monitoring Slughorn’s process around the room to make sure that he was out of earshot, “you’re his favorite because you’re the best in the year at potions and he knows it.”

The smallest of smiles appeared at the corners of her mouth, but she fought to suppress it. “Stop flirting with me, I’m not going to fall for it.”

James grinned. He knew that deep, deep down, beneath her potions ambitions, Lily was a troublemaker through and through. “Come on, do it for your favorite Gryffindor boy?”

Lily laughed incredulously. “I’m sorry, I didn’t realize Remus was asking.”

“Very funny.”

“It’s still a no.”

“Will you two quit muttering,” Dorcas hissed from her place across the row. Her cauldron emitted a foul-smelling gas that was slowly filling the entire room. Beside her, a very stressed-looking Remus shuffled through their notes in a panic. “Your gabbing is not helping us fix this shite over here.”

“Pipe down,” James called across the aisle, “it’s not our fault you lot are rubbish at points.”

Remus did not reply but raised his middle finger as he continued desperately to try and fix their concoction.

Dorcas looked affronted. “Look who’s talking! I know you lot are madly in love, but it’s rather convenient that your potions marks go up as soon as you start dating the best potioneer in the school.”

“Oi!” Lily protested as she dropped another mint leaf into their potion, “watch yourself, Meadowes.”

Dorcas grinned and winked in Lily’s direction. “No offense meant, of course.”

James ignored this comment and turned back to his annoyingly principled girlfriend. “Fine, if you won’t distract him, at least take him a vial of our potion up to the front of the room for his inspection. He’s still got to look at our work, but this way he’ll be way up there instead of in the aisles.”

He could tell that the gears in her brain spun wildly as she eyed him over their cauldron. She looked torn between her desire to present Slughorn with her beautiful, perfect potion and her determination to stand her ground.

Finally, she relented.

“Alright,” she said cautiously, “I’ll get him to the front of the room. Just be quick about it, will you?”

James could have kissed her, although he thought he might have to endure more torment from Dorcas if he did. “Lily Evans, you’re my favorite person in this room.”

“That’s only because Sirius isn’t here.” Lily grabbed an empty vial, filled it carefully to the brim with their seafoam green potion, then marched up to the front of the classroom. “Professor Slughorn?”

Slughorn hurried over excitedly to check her work. James saw Rosier across the room, clearly performing a cruel imitation of Lily as she called for their professor’s attention.

James’ blood boiled. The git really did have it coming. He reached inside his bag for his last dung bomb but discovered only broken quills and bits of parchment.

“What?” He muttered as he searched the bag again. It was impossible, he had just seen the dung bomb three minutes ago, where could it have gone?

James glanced hurriedly toward the front of the classroom. Lily still held Slughorn’s complete attention as he marveled at her impeccable work, but he knew he only had a few more seconds.

“Looking for this?”

James whipped around. Dorcas grinned cheekily at him and held out a small, brown ball. The dung bomb. HIS dung bomb.

Before he could react, Dorcas lobbed the dung bomb in a perfect arc, right into the vat of simmering potion in front of him.

The cauldron exploded.

Upon contact with the dung bomb, the potion turned into a horrible yellow color that doused James from head to toe. The smell was some disgusting combination of bad eggs, old cheese, and rubbing alcohol.

James sputtered, rendered completely immobile from shock. The classroom was silent for a moment in the aftermath of the sound of the bomb going off. Then, every person in the room erupted into jubilant laughter.

“Whoops!” Slughorn called jovially, “James, m’boy, you must pay more attention to your work in future!”

“Yes, Potter,” Dorcas managed through shaking laughter, “you must watch yourself from now on, you never know what might be going on in your own cauldron.”

James wanted to be angry with her, but he couldn’t help but laugh along with his classmates. “I’ll get you for this, Meadowes,” he said dramatically as he wagged his finger in her direction.

Dorcas laughed again. “If you’re going to get me, you’ll have to get my accomplice, too.”

“Your what-”

But the smile slid from James’ face before he could finish his thought. He rounded upon Lily, who returned from the front of the room and cleaned up the mess with a single wave of her wand.

“You?” James said incredulously and pointed at Dorcas, “you distracted Slughorn for her? Not me?”

Lily grinned mischievously. “Who said you’re the only one around here who can cause trouble?”

James gaped at her. “Have I ever told you that I’m mad for you?”

She shrugged. “Once or twice.”

For my darling @keepingupwithpotters because she is the absolute best, funniest and loveliest person ever. Here’s a little Jily fic for your birthday bby! ❤❤ I hope you have the best day ever. Wrote it in a Retribution-esque style coz I thought you’d enjoy it ;)

A stain on her shirt: red, dark, expanding.
Muddied water squelches under simple Mary Janes as she carries herself through the cover of a moonless night. Raindrops splatter against skin, lips, hair, sticking lashes together, turning the act of blinking into a challenge hitherto unheard of in its difficulty. She presses a palm onto her stomach, over the stain, cold fingers tremulous like the strings of a used guitar. Pain rushes out to meet her fingertips, and she opens her mouth to a silent pull of breath, lungs stretching to make space for the agony.
Tears mingle with rain, and she tastes salt on her tongue.
A shameful bout of fear prompts a swift change of direction, feet twisting from their previously planned path onto a new one. The entrance to the castle, though enticing and warm, remain an entirely predictable destination for her current state. She’s aware of this, which means they must be aware of it, too.
In the distance, a silhouette of a turret stretches out towards the torrential sky; her safe haven. She continues on, uniform and robes sticking uncomfortably to already chilled skin, socks swollen with soaked water. She runs a tongue over her mouth only to find freezing lips and chattering teeth, neither of which proves to be a comfortable realization.
The Owlery takes longer to reach than she’s ever fathomed possible. Seven years of ambulating through these uphill terrains have failed to prepare her for the exhaustion of the now, and she fairly collapses on the seventh stair she climbs.

Heartbeats

Happy belated birthday to @shehatedhimnahshedidnt who is basically my other half at this point. I love you so much! Here’s my apology in the form of a (hopefully) soft one-shot <3

Also, happy (early) birthday to James Potter, the boy who stole my heart all those years ago!

“Fuck, James, that was—”
The self-confident smirk thrown her way is as familiar as the back of her hand. “I know.”
“You’re a right arrogant bastard,” she pants through a smile, allowing him to step back slightly so she can slide down against the wall. The legs that had wrapped themselves around his sturdy waist and back now feel like little more than fluid joints, sweat dotting every inch of skin, rolling down her neck, sticky, warm, wonderful. She balances herself against his still bare chest once her heeled pumps hit the floor, glaring half-heartedly. “Look what you’ve gone and done. I can’t even stand.”
“Didn’t like that, then?” he whispers cheekily, lips too close to her ear, breath too hot against already sensitive skin. His thumb reaches out to gently swipe below her lower lip, the pad coated in smudged red lipstick when he pulls back. “And here I thought I’d interpreted your muffled screams correctly.”
She doesn’t get embarrassed easily, but sometimes, the things this bastard says—
“You’re highly inappropriate, you know that?”
He laughs into her shoulder, teeth gently scraping over skin. Her gasp is quiet when he sucks against her collar bone. “Says the woman who was ready to tear off my clothes a while back.”
There’s no need to point out that she’d actually plucked off a button from his shirt by mistake during this very endeavor, for she’s certain it will only lend credibility to his smug accusations and end up giving him an even bigger head. She wonders when the idea of that stopped being an annoyance and morphed into unquestioned fondness.
Merlin help her, she hates it when he’s right—she really had almost torn off his clothes.
But James makes an animal out of her, and she knows he knows it when he grins shamelessly, capturing her lips with his again. She catches lingering hints of Merlot on his tongue and knows the same remnants line her mouth as well.
“You’re illegal, Evans. The taste of you is illegal.”
“And you’re drunk, Potter,” she accuses, failing to reign in a loud sigh when his mouth travels to lick the spot where her pulse jumps excitedly against her neck. He’s pulling back quickly though, eyes glittering. She drags her hooded lids open and groans. “Don’t you dare. Don’t you dare say it—”
“Drunk on you.” His grin is positively rampant.

48: “You look cute when you’re sleepy” for jily? 💕

Avatar

Hello! Thank you for the prompt! I’m very sorry once again!

--

Soldiers

“Stop looking at me.”

“Can’t help it. You look cute when you’re sleepy.”

James raised his head from his arms, hair mussed from his attempts to nap. “Not cute. Rugged. Dangerous. Alarmingly handsome.”

Lily laughed and shook her head. “Nope. Sorry. You’re simply adorable.”

James muttered grumpily to himself as he put his head back down. He and Lily were on their seventh hour in the library. Over the course of this obscenely long study session, the table had become covered with textbooks and crumpled up bits of parchment. A few meters away a window stood ajar. They could hear the distant sounds of laughing and splashing about in the Black Lake as younger students took full advantage of the first sunny day in weeks.

Lily groaned inwardly, then turned back to her books. There would be years and years for her to enjoy the sunshine after she passed her exams.

James, however, took a different approach to his studies. He hadn’t lifted a single book in over an hour and decided to amuse himself by either napping or blurting out every thought that popped into his head. Her patience had held so far, but she could feel herself getting more and more agitated.

A few minutes later, James’ muffled voice broke Lily’s concentration once again. “What if I just decided not to graduate?”

If side-eye could kill. “I’m going to throw you out the window if you keep bothering me. I’ve read this sentence four times and I’ll be damned if I have to read it again.”

“Alright, alright,” James scowled.

Lily sighed and set down her book. “If you want to go, then go!”

“No way,” James spoke once again into his arms, “if I leave now, then fail my exams, I’ll spend the rest of my life wondering, what if I had just stayed in the library with my beautiful girlfriend? What then?”

“Solid logic.”

“I thought so too, thanks.”

“James.”

Sirius had sidled up to their table unnoticed. His face was gray and taught.

James sat up and ran a hand through his wild hair. “What’s up?”

Sirius seemed determined to avoid Lily’s gaze. “I need to talk to you. Not here, come outside.”

Thank you for the prompt!! Send me more prompts here :)

This turned into part 2 of my other prompt, Complicated

--

Lily huffed and threw down her quill. That was the third time in five minutes that she’d incorrectly labeled her Astronomy chart. At this rate it would take half the night to finish her assignments. She sat back, cursing her clumsy fingers, and reached for her wand to siphon off the spilled ink. The short break in her homework allowed her mind to wander back to James.

He and his friends had returned from Hogsmeade that afternoon. James, a little cross-eyed and unsteady on his feet, determinedly didn’t glance at her as he made his way to the boy’s dormitory. Lily suspected that the bottles of dusty firewhiskey on display at The Hog’s Head were to blame for James’ demeanor. She didn’t like to think of him drinking out of sadness, especially sadness that she had caused.

Lily leaned back in her spot on the maroon couch and closed her eyes. Honestly, she thought, massaging her temples in frustration, why does he always insist on making things more difficult? There was no reason James couldn’t flirt with other girls in their year. There were plenty of pureblood and halfblood girls who would have killed for him to wink at them, to ruffle his stupid hair and flash his crooked smile in their direction. Why did he always have to flirt with her instead, even when he knew the liability she would be to him?

“Bad night?”

Lily opened her eyes. An upside down Remus grinned at her from above. Lily sat up again in her chair and stretched, then patted the seat next to her. “Come, join the misery.”

“You make it sound so appealing,” Remus laughed, taking the seat beside her. He pulled out several large textbooks and a roll of parchment. “I’m so behind in Herbology. Sprout’s better than the others, but she’s still making me do the essay I missed last full moon.”

Lily grimaced. She knew that Remus often had trouble with professors who did not accept his Lycanthropy as an excuse for missing homework assignments. The teachers might have to accept Remus’ condition on Dumbledore’s orders, but they weren’t obligated to cut him any slack. Lily tried to help Remus as much as she could, but he always felt behind his classmates in their assignments.

“Here,” she smiled, pushing her own finished essay towards him, “take mine. I got it back today in class.”

“Bless you,” Remus said, scanning her neat writing, “this is going to help loads.”

“No problem,” mumbled Lily, who had gone back to work on her Astronomy chart.

“Funny,” said Lupin easily as he retrieved his quill and ink from his bag, “that you’re so nice to me and so stubborn with James.”

Her eyes snapped to Remus’. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing!” He looked anxious for a moment, like he hadn’t expected her quick-tempered reaction, “just that he told us you had a row. Something about you not wanting to be seen with him. He was pretty cut up, if you must know.”

Lily groaned and dropped her head into her hands. Blimey, he had been drinking on her account.

“It wasn’t like that,” Lily said into her hands, “he wanted to walk down to the village together, and I told him it wasn’t a good idea. He never let me explain that I didn’t want trouble from the Slytherin lot when they saw us together.”

Remus frowned. “Why would walking with James make you worry about trouble from the Slyterhins? They always try to mess with you, why would he make any difference?”

Lily did not speak for a moment. How much did she really want to divulge to Remus? She didn’t want to sound dramatic or self-centered. Like her little life could have such a profound impact on James’ that she couldn’t be seen with him.

“It’s...complicated?” she offered weakly.

Remus laughed. “Yeah, he said you’d say that.”

“He doesn’t get it,” Lily spoke suddenly, feeling the words pour from her like a fawcett, “he doesn’t understand the shit I’m in these days. The shit we’re all in, muggleborns,” Lily looked pleadingly at Remus now, “It’s so dangerous out there. They’ve already threatened my dad once. We’re barely safe in Hogwarts where we have to deal with shit from the Slytherins and, frankly, the other houses too, and all the while we’re worried about our families and the war and everything else!”

Lily noticed her shoulders shaking and tried to steady her nerves. Remus regarded her gently, as if he was waiting for her to finish before he spoke, so she plowed on.

“And then Potter, pureblood, practically part of the Sacred 28, starts trying to chat me up in public. And he’s not exactly subtle, is he? He’s always making a spectacle, making everyone look at him, perceive him, and he loves it! He doesn’t understand that knowing me, being close to me, is more dangerous for him than it is for other people. If he gets close to me they’ll consider it the highest betrayal. They’ll target him. I won’t let that happen.”

When Lily finished she found she needed a moment to catch her breath. She’d said all that very quickly, as if she’d been keeping it in for a long time, and had not paused to censor her words. She felt her chest lighten a bit. It felt good to tell Remus her fears.

Remus put his hand over hers. “Lily,” he whispered, stroking his thumb along her wrist, “like it or not, we’re all going to still want to know you no matter how bad this war gets. So you better get used to it.”

She let out a watery laugh, trying to wipe away the tears that formed behind her eyes without him noticing. “Thanks, Remus. But you get it, don’t you? I mean -” she said quickly, not wanting to offend him, “I’m not saying it’s the same, being muggleborn and a...you know,” she whispered, glancing around at the common room for anyone listening to their conversation. “But you understand what it’s like to be afraid to be close to someone.”

“Yes,” he whispered, gripping her hand tighter, “I do. And that’s why I’m telling you that you have to fight that fear. Pushing people away keeps you isolated, and being isolated makes you vulnerable. For your sake, as well as everyone else’s, you have to try and let people get close to you.”

She smirked at him. “People like your good pal James?”

“Well, if not him, then someone else,” Remus laughed, “I’m just saying, James knows what he’s doing. He’s not thick, most of the time. He knows that you’ve got it worse than him and he’s not afraid to stand up and be there for you. He knows what he could lose in this war, the same as the rest of us. And people like that don’t come around every day.” Remus patted her hand once then turned back to his homework. “Just make sure you’re pushing him away because he’s an obnoxious, arrogant git, and not because you’re afraid of hurting him.”

Lily laughed. “You know me so well.”

“I know you both well,” Remus chuckled, “believe me, your instincts aren’t entirely wrong. Oh, look, speak of the devil.”

Lily whipped around in her seat.

James stood awkwardly in the doorway to the boy’s dormitory, bookbag slung across his shoulder. He looked at her wearily.

“Oh, hi,” he stumbled.

“Glad to see you’re good as new again,” Remus beamed at him. Lily avoided James’ gaze.

“Yeah, you know me. I can always rally. I was just on my way to the library…”

“No,” Lily interjected, surprising both boys and herself, “join us.” She pointed at the empty armchair next to her seat.

James stared at her. “Are you sure? If you’re busy -”

“I insist,” she said, still pointing at the chair.

James looked unsure, but he took the empty chair. Lily was annoyed to notice that Remus was unable to hide his wide, knowing smile as James sat down.

“So,” James said, pulling out his Astronomy chart, “have you been able to crack this yet?”

“Nope,” Lily was grateful for the easy homework conversation, “I was just telling Remus I’ll be here half the night finishing.”

“Well...Good. I’ll be here too, with you.”

She smiled. “Thanks, James.”

“Always.”

“I am going to kill you.”

“Calm down.” He whispered as quietly as he could, barely making any noise at all.

“No. It’s going to be slow and painful. I’ll make you wish you were never born.”

“Is it wrong that I’m turned on right now?”

Lily jabbed her boyfriend in the ribs and he clapped a hand over his mouth to keep from crying out.

Currently, she and James crouched half naked, clutching bits of school uniform to their chests, and hiding under the invisibility cloak in the corner of a previously-deserted classroom. It had been his idea to make the most of the classroom after a long night of Head duties. They had heard voices in the corridor outside, just as James ripped her tie and button-up over her head, and ducked under the cloak. To Lily’s horror, Severus and Rosier entered the classroom and started arranging the desks for some sort of meeting.

“What do you reckon?” Lily whispered as she watched Sev drag a desk across the stone floor to create an open circle in the center of the room, “some sort of meeting?”

“Dueling practice,” James breathed, his eyes narrowed on Rosier, “I’ve heard him brag about it before.”

Lily grabbed James’ arm. “We’ve got to get out of here, now. Soon more of them will show up and we’ll be outnumbered. Plus, if they’re here to duel, they’ll be ready for a fight.”

“Right,” James motioned toward the front of the room, “I’m going to cause a distraction over there. As soon as they look, we run, alright? Stay low, keep the cloak over your ankles.”

Lily nodded. “You know, life was so much easier when I hated you.”

James shrugged. “Easier, yes, but less fun. Okay...now!”

James pointed his wand between the folds of the invisibility cloak and shot a jet of red sparks towards the front of the classroom. Lily saw Sev spin around on his heel, looking around wildly for the source of the spell, but James tugged her arm and she ran for it. They didn’t take particular care to stay quiet as they sprinted down the classroom and out the door. James led her down the corridor and into a passage concealed by a large tapestry. They finally skidded to a halt, still under the cloak, in front of the Charms classroom.

“I - think - we - lost - them,” panted James, who was bent at the waist with his hands on his knees.

Lily grimaced as she wiped sweat from her brow. “Quick thinking back there, Potter. Who knew you were so bright.”

“My mother always said I was smarter than I looked,” James grinned as he began to put his clothes back on, “look on the bright side, at least we’ll have something to tell Dumbledore.”

Lily grabbed his hand. “What do you think you’re doing?”

He looked down at her, stunned. “Uh, getting decent?”

She smiled wickedly. “Haven’t you heard? ‘I-can’t-believe-we-got-away-sex is incredible.”

Without wasting another moment, James wrapped his arms around Lily’s waist and carried her, muffling her shriek of laughter with his shoulder, to the nearest broom closet.

Complicated

The students greeted each other and chatted animatedly as they loitered in the Great Hall. Excitement hung thick in the air before the first Hogsmeade trip of the term. The students, already bored of studying, longed to rid themselves of the stuffy castle and stroll up and down the village streets with no agenda. The news had been so terrible recently, new deaths and attacks reported every day, that they had collectively decided that everyone needed a day off.

Lily stood with her back to the crowd, clicking her tongue boredly as she waited for Dorcas and Mary to join her. She’s only left the common room after making both girls promise not to sleep through the day. Mary had merely grunted, and Dorcas stuck a hand out from under the covers to flip her off.

As Lily wondered whether her friends would ever join her she felt a sharp jab between her shoulder blades. Ouch! She whirled around for the cause of the pain. “Watch it, mudblood,” hissed Rosier as he passed. He’d jabbed her in the back with the point of his wand.

Lily forced herself to stay cool. He wouldn’t dare attack her in the hall, there were too many other students around. Besides, she could handle Rosier.

She watched him walk away with narrowed eyes, then looked back up the staircase towards the Gryffindor common room. It was entirely possible that her two dates had abandoned her after all.

But for Lily Evans another date was always waiting around the corner.

“Alright, Evans?” a voice called to her from across the hall.

She sighed. James Potter and two thirds of his crew meandered through the crowd in her direction.

Sirius glanced behind her, as if he were looking for someone. “You look a little lost without your girl gang, Evans.”

“Yes, well,” Lily winced as she tried to rub the bruise between her shoulders, “some of us had a bit of a lie-in this morning. They never could handle their booze.”

Remus tutted loudly. “Lily Evans, head girl, drinking alcohol!”

“I’m of age!” she laughed, punching him on the arm, “though I suppose that doesn’t make a difference when we’re in school.”

“Careful, Evans,” James wagged a finger annoyingly in her face, “or we’ll report you. We can’t have any troublemaking in the dorm that isn’t caused by the four of us.”

“Speaking of the four of you,” Lily interrupted, “where’s Pete?”

“Detention,” snickered Sirius, “the git didn’t hand in his Transfiguration homework. He’s only barely in the NEWT class in the first place, and you know McGonagall hates when people slack in her class.”

Lily raised an eyebrow at Sirius. “Yes, I’m sure you would know all about that.”

Sirius, pretending to be offended by Lily’s comment, grabbed Remus’ hand. “Come on, love, best leave these two to chat. We’ll meet you in The Hog’s Head, Prongs.” And they wandered away towards the large front doors.

James watched them go with a sappy look on his face. “Those two are so adorable, don’t you think?”

Lily smiled, but realized that she suddenly didn’t know what to say. She and James didn’t usually find themselves alone unless they were on Head duties or studying. She felt her palms grow a bit sweaty, which made her want to smack herself. It’s just Potter, she thought furiously, get a grip.

“Well,” prompted James, who raised a hand to scratch the back of his head anxiously. This movement showed off the muscles in his arms, toned from hours on the quidditch pitch. Stop thinking about his muscles! she berated herself. “I guess we should get going then, shouldn’t we?”

“What?” She snapped distractedly, forcing herself back to the present.

“Hogsmeade, I guess we should head down,” James gestured at the crowd of students behind her. They had begun to make their way out of the entrance hall and down into the grounds.

Lily paused. It was one thing to chat with James in the entrance hall where the whole school gathered. It was another to walk down to Hogsmeade with him. Alone. Where Rosier or anyone else could see.

She took a step away from James. “I better not. People might think…”

James took a small step towards her, the corner of his mouth lifting flirtatiously. “Might think what, exactly?”

Lily felt her insides grow cold. “Might think there’s something going on between us when there isn’t.”

James froze, the smile melting off his face. He tried to puff out his chest and look unbothered, but Lily knew better. “Right,” he huffed, “of course. Couldn’t have people thinking that, imagine the horror.”

“Potter,” she was doing this all wrong, “it isn’t like that. It’s nothing personal, it’s just complicated-”

“No, you’re right. It’s complicated. I’ll see you around, Evans,” and with that, James turned on his heel and marched out into the sunlight.

“Fantastic job, Lily,” she muttered to herself as she watched him go with a hollow feeling in her heart.

She couldn’t expect him to understand. It was acceptable that she and James had grown closer this year, given that they were Head Boy and Girl, but she knew she couldn’t let their connection grow into anything beyond acquaintance. These days, muggleborns walked the halls at Hogwarts with targets on their backs. Lily was already considering going into hiding with her Dad after graduation. She couldn’t drag James into her mess. Life was already complicated enough without introducing cocky, headstrong, pureblood into the mix.

She checked her watch and sighed. Her friends definitely weren’t coming. She glanced one last time towards the front doors, but James had disappeared into the thinning crowd. Lily turned on the spot and headed towards the staircase. There would always be another Hogsmeade trip next month.

Betrayal

Not another one shot about how James is simp nation!!!!

—-

James was on cloud nine.

He felt taller than usual, strutting beside Lily as they finished their first round together as Head Boy and Girl. It was Lily’s turn to set the schedule, and to his surprise she had paired them together not once but twice this week.

When he had asked why she paired them together twice she played it off as a strategic decision. “I want to set an example. I want all those Death-Eaters-in-training to know that we’re not taking any of their shit this year.” He’d nodded solemnly, trying to keep his face straight. He couldn’t help but hope that she just wanted to spend time with him.

“Alright, let’s check the dungeons one more time, then I think we’re good for the night,” Lily said with conviction. James agreed. He wasn’t about to argue with her, spending time together under any circumstances, even in the depressing dungeons, was his best case scenario.

“You’re quiet tonight,” Lily said, narrowing her eyes at him, “unusually quiet. Most days I can’t get you to shut up for five minutes.”

James laughed. “Ah, Evans,” he placed a hand against his heart as if wounded, “you disappoint me! I’m really a very mature, principled man. You’ll realize that if you keep putting us together for rounds.”

“Hmm” she hummed, “you’re right. Only a mature, principled man could have come up with the brilliant plan to sneak garroting gas to the entire Slytherin quidditch team last week.”

James’ mouth fell open. “How did you know it was me?”

Lily grinned in his direction. “You just told me, idiot,” but she said the word with more affection than she had in the past. It made his heart skip a beat.

“Well, you can’t blame me, can you? Talk about Death-Eaters-in-training.”

Lily was silent for a moment. “No, I suppose I can’t blame you.”

James stopped in his tracks. “Excuse me?” he said in a sing song voice, dramatically lifting his hand to cup his ear as if to enhance his hearing, “do my ears deceive me? Did you just condone rule breaking, Ms. Head Girl?”

“Oh, pipe down,” Lily laughed, “like you said, they deserved it. And to tell you the truth you’ve impressed me tonight. You were on time, completely took the reins with those fourth years who were out of bed by the Astronomy Tower, and I didn’t have to say a word when we caught Benjy and Amelia snogging in that broom cupboard.”

James felt his chest puff out in pride. “Blimey, I think that’s the biggest compliment you’ve ever given me.”

Lily kept her gaze straight ahead as they approached the stairs. “Don’t push your luck, Potter. The shift’s not over.” Still, he couldn’t help but feel as if he were walking on air as they descended into the damp dungeons.

They patrolled the first dungeon corridor for a few minutes, and when they felt satisfied that the coast was clear they moved toward the Slytherin common room. A disgusting scent filled their nostrils as they approached the dormitory. As they turned the corner James heard whispered voices and felt his heart sink.

“Hand me that bucket, will you, Pete?”

“Get it yourself! It’s closer to you anyway.”

“Quit being a brat, this is a team effort!”

“Oh no it’s not, I’m not putting my name on such a juvenile prank.”

“Come on, Moony! This is brilliant! I saw it on a muggle tellyfission show once.”

“Yes, but-”

“Excuse me,” said Lily loudly. All three boys jumped and whirled around. Peter held a bucket full of what smelled like stink sap. Sirius had his wand raised and pointed towards the top of the door frame. Remus raised his hands in front of him as if to say he had nothing to do with the scene before them.

“Really? You really had to choose tonight, when James and I were on duty, to prank the Slytherins?”

Sirius recovered quickly, stowing his wand inside his robes. “Ah, Evans,” he said jovially, “you don’t seriously think we’d prank our dear friends in Slytherin, do you? Why, I just couldn’t live with myself if you thought I was the type to do such a thing.”

“Then why is Pete holding a bucket of stink sap?”

“Because we were were cleaning up a spill!” Remus interjected, pushing Sirius out of the way, “some careless student must have dropped it right in front of the common room, and we decided to clean it for them.”

Lily crossed her arms, but said nothing. Finally she stepped back and looked expectantly at James. “Well?”

James stared at her. “Well what?”

Lily gestured to the guilty party. “You’ve been on a disciplinary roll tonight. Don’t let me get in your way. You’re Head Boy, they are rule breakers, do your worst.”

James laughed uneasily. “Come on, you aren’t serious,”

“Dead serious! Come on, let’s see what you’ve got.” Lily looked stern, but a smile crept at the corners of her mouth. It was incredibly attractive.

Sirius stepped forward, moving to throw an arm around James’ shoulders. “Come on, Evans, James is one of us. He would never-”

“Ten points from Gryffindor!” James blurted out before he could stop himself.

Peter gasped. Remus let out a loud chuckle, then slapped a hand to his mouth to hide his glee.

Sirius gaped at him. “Traitor!”

“Is that all?” Lily smirked, “They could have covered some poor first year in stink sap by mistake, and all they get is 30 points off Gryffindor?”

James rounded on his friends again. “And a night of detention!”

“I called you brother!” Sirius shrieked, clutching at his heart at this betrayal. Remus’ shoulders shook with laughter in the background.

“Excellent job. You really are more mature than I thought.” Lily, satisfied, gave the boys one last smug look. “Well gentlemen, I hope you’ll think twice about rule breaking now that there’s a new sheriff in town. I think that’ll do for tonight’s rounds, eh Potter? Ta boys!” And with that, she turned on her heel and marched back up the corridor.

James felt dazed as he watched her walk away. She had said he did an excellent job. That he was more mature than she thought. That she had a deep burning passion for him - no, that had been his imagination. Beaming, James turned to share his victory with his friends.

Instead, Sirius smacked him across the head. “Git! You sold us out!”

James raised his hands in surrender. “Oh come on! She would have given you detention anyway! Think of this as a favor, you guys just made me look great in front of her.”

“Oh, yes,” said Peter sarcastically, “that really takes away the sting of your treachery.”

James rounded on Remus. “Moony! You’re a prefect! You know I had no choice, right?”

Remus considered him for a moment, still trying to hide the smile that betrayed his utter delight with the situation.

“Well… all I can say, mate, is that Lily has got you completely wrapped around her wand.” And he burst into laughter.

The smile slid from James’ face. No. It couldn’t be…

Sirius started to laugh too. “Blimey, I didn’t think I’d ever see it. James Potter, a narc.”

“I am NOT a narc!” James yelled, lunging at Sirius, who gracefully stepped out of his reach, “I knew exactly what I was doing.”

“I’m sure you did, but you’re one hundred percent whipped, my friend.”

Peter laughed now too, and soon all three boys were doubled over, howling in laughter at their friend’s predicament. James could only stand in silently, arms crossed defiantly across his chest, and wait for his friends to regain control over themselves.

Finally, when their laughter subsided into badly-supressed giggles, James spoke. “Alright, say I am ‘whipped,’ what do you say lads? Do you think I have a shot with her?”

His friends stared at him for a moment, shared a bemused look, then pushed past James towards the stairs out of the dungeons.

“Oi! Wait up! Do I have a shot or not?”

“Don’t make it a big deal.” (Oh, Bollocks, Ch. 2″

The thunder crashed for the thousandth time that night and James promptly rolled over, shoving his head under his pillow and groaning. After another ten more minutes of that, he decided sleep was far from sight for him, and he stood to go for a walk. Slipping on his robe, he shuffled out of his dorm and headed down the stairs to the Heads’ common room, yawning and running his fingers absentmindedly along the textured ridges of the wall. As he neared the room though, he paused, listening to the slight sniffling sound coming from the room. He quietly moved down the rest of the stairs and into the common room, glancing around for the only other resident of the dormitory.

Sure enough, there she was.

Curled up on the couch and pressing her face into a musty throw pillow, her scarlet hair billowing out around her; Lily Evans was sobbing.

He stood still for a minute unsure how to proceed, listening to her panicked heaves, before snapping to his senses and approaching her.

Lowering himself onto the cushion beside her, he cleared his throat gently and tentatively reached out to touch her hair. She looked up lightning fast and stared at him for a minute before turning away and reaching up to wipe away her tears.

“Potter,” she muttered.

“Hey,” he responded. She was wiping away her smudged mascara when another bolt of lightning flashed outside the window and the rumble of another clap of thunder was heard. Lily was immediately reduced to a shivering, sobbing mess again.

A really pretty shivering, sobbing mess , James thought, but a mess nonetheless. Lily crumpled into him as more thunder sounded and the cogs in his mind, cobwebbed by fatigue and weariness, began to piece things together. When there was what seemed to be a break in the storm, James spoke softly.

“So you’re afraid of thunder, huh?” he said trying his damndest to morph his usual mocking tone into a more comforting one. She pulled away from him and tucked her knees to her chest, her face hardening.

“Yeah, yeah, don’t make it into a big deal. The head girl has a flaw. Whoopdee bloody doo.”

“Lily I wasn’t going to tease you. I know what it’s like to be afraid of something. I myself have fallen victim to epistemophobia over the years,” he said, a slight smile creeping across his face as he attempted a joke.

“Fear of knowledge?” she questioned, turning toward him, her right eyebrow heavily quirked.

“Oh yes, I’m afraid that’s why I’ve had to depend so heavily on you and Remus. Sirius has got it too, what a shame. It’s why we’re truant so often as well. But you can’t really blame us for avoiding the thing that terrifies us: class.” His reply was said with mock seriousness and they held eye contact until Lily rolled her eyes and relaxed into the couch again.

“You arse.”

James smiled and reclined as she launched into a lecture on the importance of education and knowledge. He half-listened to her and his smile widened every time a rumble of thunder could be heard outside, because she didn’t even notice it. The lecture was distracting her well enough from the storm outside, and James could certainly handle a talking-to if it meant saving Lily from her phobia. The two of them stayed there on the sofa, their shoulders brushing, for the duration of the thunder, Lily nagging and James listening. When they awoke there in the morning, arms intertwined, neither of them said anything but both walked away with rosy cheeks and much to think about.

Sirius, stunningly drunk, was trying to climb a tree. James, tragically sober, was trying to skip rocks on the black lake.

“I’m telling you he doesn’t only put in carpet.” Lily was sat on the grass leaning back on her elbows.

“Sure.” James couldn’t get his wrist to do the thing to make the rock skip.

“I feel like you don’t believe me.”

“That’s because I don’t. Why are they called carpenters if they don’t exclusively put in carpet?”

A stone hits him in the back. It feels like Lily knows how to do the wrist thing. “It’s a general term. He builds houses.” Behind them, there is a noise like someone’s running against a tree trunk to maintain balance, and they both ignored it, “he barely puts in carpet at all actually, he mainly builds the skeleton of buildings. Before all the plastering and shit goes on.”

“Skeleton?” His rock plopped into the lake solemnly, like it was trying to disappoint him.

“That’s not a technical term. It’s what he used to tell me and my sister he did when we were little. That he built house skeletons.” On this note, he turned back to her. The light from her wand illuminated the freckles on her arms. He coughed.

“That’s cute. That he told you that, I mean.”

“Yeah” she smiled absently, looking at him. “Dad was good like that.”

“Oi! I think there’s Bowtruckle’s in here!” Sirius called to his uninterested audience.

“We’re never going to get back in the castle without Filch catching us.” Lily observed, eyes drifting out to the lake. He thought of the map in his pocket.

“Nah, we’ll be fine.” He wanted to ask about her dad again, or her sister, but the moment had passed. Don’t be greedy he thought, even though he was.

“There are Bowtr– FUCK.” There was a horrible noise behind them, like the sound of a sixteen-year old boy falling out of a tree. James locked eyes with Lily.

“Padfoot?” he called, cautiously. Someone near the tree groaned.

“Christ.” Lily muttered and got up, dusting her skirt. Her face had faded Gryffindor colours on it still from the match, streak of red and black along each cheekbone. To distract himself from this James started walking towards Sirius, who was lying face down in the grass. His robes were still charmed red, the dirt and firewhiskey all over them forming a paste that was thrown into sharp relief by Lily’s wand light

“Not to pile on, but this really is low.” Lily’s arms were folded, looking down at Sirius, who half-heartedly gave her the finger. Lily smiled.

“Mate, this is a bit sad.” James’ agreed. In protest Sirius moaned loudly. James pretended not to have heard. “We should put him in the lake to sober him up.”

Lily looked at him. “He could drown.”

James shrugged. “So be it.” Lily laughed, the sound ringing in the dark.

Sirius rolled over, groaning, throwing an arm over his face and flinching from the light. If it was daylight his clothes would probably look worse, but the dark was forgiving. Everything sort of blended together, shadows on shadows. Except Lily, who stood out like a crack of lightning. All that pale skin. Only some visible.

“If we don’t get him inside soon Mrs Norris will smell him out.” Lily stated, probably correctly. Out of habit, James looked at the sky. Full moon in two days.

“If you move me I’ll die” Sirius said this into the dirt, but it sounded true.

“Better you than us.” Lily said, flatly. James smirked.

“Fuck you. Where is the sympathy.”

“it disappeared when you threw up in my shoes” James said, honestly, crouching down. “Give me your hand.”

He hauled him up, putting one of Sirius’ arms over his shoulder. Sirius, as per, was completely unhelpful by going entirely limp, forcing Lily to press a hand against his chest. She forced his arm around her shoulder. Her hand, looping around Sirius’ back, touched James and he quite literally started.

“No sudden movements.” Sirius complained, pathetically.

“You talk a lot of shit for someone who’s having to be carried right now.” Lily grumbled, staggering slightly. James pulled more of Sirius’ weight to his side.

“Die Evans.” Sirius said, diplomatically.

They didn’t talk as they struggled back to the castle. When they got inside James pulled out the map scrumptiously and looked over it. Filch on the eighth floor, Minnie on the third. They were fine.

“What’s that.” Lily asked as he shoved it back in his pocket.

“Nothing. Old game plans.” James unhooked Sirius’ arm from his shoulder and let him slump onto the stairs, moaning quietly.

“Are you going to drag him up the stairs?” Lily sounded concerned.

“He vomited in both shoes. Twice.” She smiled. More he thought. “You can go up to bed, you know. I’ll just levitate him. It’ll be fine.”

“Nah” she shrugged, “I’m good here.” In the candlelight she looked more like how she normally did, less lightning and more girl. Her hair was curling past her shoulders, as long as it had been in first year, red as ever. She was looking at him, head slightly tilted, and he couldn’t stop thinking of her as a child, thinking houses had skeletons. How small she would’ve been.

“Stop ogling and take me upstairs.” Sirius whispered groggily. James kicked him in the shoulder.

“I’m not ogling, git.” He flicked his wand and Sirius floated an inch of the ground, moving up the stairs slowly, already muttering furiously about motion sickness.

“Shame.” Lily said, still looking at him oddly. Like she was just starting to figure something out

“What?”

She shook her head. “Nothing.” Starting past him, her arm brushed his. A split second. “C’mon, let’s go to bed.”
