The dormitory was still. The sun had barely crested the horizon. A cold chill sat in the room but the bed was warm and the duvet was thick and the sheets were soft and it was on mornings like this that James thanked Merlin for the Heads’ Private Quarters.
Mornings when he woke with Lily wrapped up in his arms, auburn lashes splayed across her pale freckled cheeks. She would stir slowly, push the hair out of her face. Then she would yawn and stretch her arms above her head and say “Good morning, you,” and drop a kiss on his smiling mouth.
It was on this particular morning that Lily followed up with, “And happy birthday,” and before James knew it, she was pushing herself atop him and leaving a trail of blazing kisses down his bare chest and disappearing under the duvet as he thanked Merlin for the first of many times that morning.
