pooh’s reading challenge

hey all!

one of my goals for 2019 was to read more books, and i want to keep that trend going into graduate school. i’m at 20 books as of this post [coming back from my semi-hiatus in a day or two; this is queued], and want to read at least 10 more books before the year is out.

my aim is to post weekly about the new books i’m picking up!

🍃 if you want to join, reblog this post, and i’ll be tracking #poohsbookclub throughout the semester [from now until the end of november] 🍃 my average: a book per week, but obviously you can set your own goal 🍃 i’m reading everything from fiction to science to autobiographies, no limit! 🍃 i would love to hear about the books you all choose, so drop by my inbox and discuss your readings sometime 💌

happy reading!

day 30 | unedited clouds vs edited studies

reading over the prosody chapter got my heart skipping, no exaggeration. i’m not sure why it didn’t occur to me that prosodic variation would fall under sociophonetics, but i am absolutely giddy about the chance to explore this subfield.

my first day of classes are tomorrow, aka The Beginning of Everything.

day 18

the validation I feel reading this chapter is incredible. every issue i have with language education is on these pages. the ‘native speaker’ myth, ‘standard x language’, forced L2 in classrooms, ‘superiority of natural immersion’, ‘othering of languages’. Lourdes Ortega snapped a bit with this one! i wonder if my foreign language methodologies course will talk about this and the supposed apolitical stance that FL heads usually take. i might be shaking the table this fall...

aug 1 | last day of suffering without a/c in my car 😥 anyone else relieved to finally be in august?

today i am saying goodbye to my bosses and colleagues. this was a really fulfilling position, but it’s time to move on. one of my bosses did a really cool thing for me yesterday, and i am so grateful to him. it’s nice to feel appreciated! i am more than ready and excited for my next steps..

i’m so glad i got back into language tutoring. the past 19-ish months have really nurtured my ideas for the future and given me a lot of confidence and a few laughs too!

would i have envisioned speaking in front of 500+ people in a matter of weeks, or tutoring over 1300 students? certainly not.

i like surprises.

day 2/30 of my last month before grad school:

as much as i have done externally towards my goals, i am so much more excited about my internal changes. i am very confident that i am going to create a much better environment for myself when i go back to school, because i have much stronger knowledge about my needs and my desires.
