Heartbroken.
oh im sick who authorized this . now the lips look like a frog instead of a vaguely inappropriate shape .
both of these icons are absolutely horrifying but i’m fond of the left one so much!

04072020 | 3 more weeks, 3 more weeks!
look at how treestar is growing !
anyway, i finished my second lab yesterday [overwrote my sound file and was only saved bc i had sent it to my prof last week..]. it took 4 hours, but it felt good to have it done. today i’m going to work on my phonetics presentation .. which is actually vowel duration not monophthongization haha ... and get some questions answered by my theoretical class prof!
03252020 | why do american southern english speakers sound like this .
been measuring and plotting the vowels of me and my sibling’s for an hour and a half and yes i may be regretting this a bit. our vowel spaces look really funky on a chart [theirs is like .. collapsed] and our cot-caught mergers are on different vowels ???
ANYWAY ..
starting my lab stuff so that i can have another meeting w my prof before the day ends
two recordings of wordlists
two segmented textgrids
look up phonetics stuff
this truly took forever ... rhoticized schwas morphed into diphthongs ... carats became diphthongs .. diphthongs monophthongized ... jesus .
‘i like how easy it is to find your Ls ... everyone else struggles but yours is so clear, how do you articulate them’
phoneticians are FUNNY .... thank you mom for making me practice dark Ls as a child ?
currently feeling like the front of the tongue for dark l [ɫ] - somewhat depressed. [love-hate relationship with phonetics intesifies a week before the final exam]
02222020 | more twos ... part 3
transcription is really......do i like it? not entirely. even doing one section of this paper prompts ten minutes of discussion bc ‘this doesn’t feel syllabic’ or ‘is that really a glide?’ and i’m sick of it! i feel annoyed with centralized vowels too because the stressed/unstressed versions are pretty similar to my ear.
hmm .. my classmate said my accent is heavy on ‘water’ ... but the way i pronounce it is like how they do in philly . i’ve never even been to philly though ,,.
…the tt in spaghetti is actually geminate . spaghet … ti ..
me over here : spuhgeddy .
There’s also two types of Dutch people: those who pronounce the g in spaghetti as [g] and those who say [ɣ]. Don’t think we ever geminate the t.
the italians lost this battle truly , spa-yeti for the win!

02162020 | disyllabic minimal pairs displaying stress in english
these pairs are fun to me because i don’t always contrast them / remember which is which. according to my prof, the verb forms have initial stress, while the noun forms have final stress, but i don’t pay attention to that most times. i switched out ‘convert’ because i’m not convinced that’s an actual example of this case.
02142020 | happy valentine’s day!
linguistics pick-up line: ‘i want to stop your bilabials 👀’
02092020 | phonetics + art
*waxes poetic about formants and their elegance*
02052020 | phonetics and ... logic?
still hammering away at ipa (and trying to practice those ‘handwritten As’). meanwhile, i was finally able to work out more difficult truth tables....i couldn’t even understand them in undergrad!
we transcribed /dɪslɛksɪk/ the other day n my prof read it off n was like ‘pooh, this is your favorite word isn’t it ?’
he would’ve laughed seeing my paper .. all my episilons were reversed .. how do you SPELL this term anyway .
