Calm seas / closed rp

Hidden deep amongst gnarled vine covered mangrove trees of a murky swamp, pale green smoke billowed out through the windows of an old wooden shack, filling the air with a strongly pungent odour of strange herbs, wood ash and burnt hair.

"A t'ousand curses on 'dat merchant! Him sold me not'in but rotten leaves fer good money!" With an infuriated swipe of her hand Tia Dalma sent the smoking bowl and its contents all over the wooden floor. The morning had been a trying one with every single potion failing, which was highly unusual for the bound sea goddess and therefore highly disturbing.

Her brow creased in deep thought as she studied the runes for an answer to her plight, barely noticing the creak of heavy boots upon the stairs outside her front door, when normally hours before she would have known precisely when and who was visiting. But it seemed that something was hindering her abilities and they were all she had left to rely upon in her human form.

It was his first visit to her shack since the ill-fated battle between Lord Beckett’s massive EITC fleet and the Pirate Lords.  The term ill-fated was a real understatement since two of the nine pirate lords, and their ships, were lost during that battle:  Eduardo Villanueva, Lord of the Adriatic Sea and Ammand the Corsair, Lord of the Black Sea. The rest of the pirates did their best against such a formidable enemy but each of the remaining Pirate Lords eventually retreated and just barely escaped.

Prior to the battle, Barbossa had convinced most of them all that releasing Calypso from her bonds would result in them having a secret weapon.  A weapon that would help them defeat the EITC armada. But what was claimed did not turn out to be reality.  The required ritual of burning all nine pieces of eight was performed, along with the murmured incantation. Then everyone who was onboard as witnesses waited expectantly, all eyes on the bound form of Tia Dalma.  And they waited.  And waited.  But nothing happened.  No physical change occurred to the sorceress.  The only change around them was that the fog suddenly lifted and off in the distance they could see dozens upon dozens of ships bearing down on them.

In the aftermath of the Pirate Lords’ stunning defeat, there were plenty of accusations flung Barbossa’s way.  He felt the weight of that failure on his shoulders even though he tried hard to project an air of defiance.

And now, after tying the small boat to the bottom of the wooden stairs, he made his way up. This visit was unannounced but then he knew from past experience that that did not keep her from knowing in advance anyway.

Barbossa wasn’t even sure why he had come to see her. But something was nagging at the back of his mind and he couldn’t quite figure it out - only that it had to do with her.  So he had come up with a pretext for the visit. Wee Jack, who sat perched on the man’s right shoulder, gave a little whimper of excitement as though he could read his master’s mind. They had come for more “Jack Juice”.  It was a concoction of Tia’s but wasn’t actually a liquid, it only started out that way. But once all the liquid was boiled away, what was left were small pellets. Barbossa had no idea what it was made of but Jack simply adored the stuff.

Hector’s current stash of Jack Juice was gone - hence the pretext for coming to see her this day. The empty container she had initially given him was cradled in one arm as he opened the door to her crude hut.  Ducking slightly so that his hat would clear the top of the door opening, he stepped into the crowded and visually overwhelming room.

Then, what shall we die for? You will listen to me! Listen! The Brethren will still be looking here, to us, to the Black Pearl, to lead. And what will they see? Frightened bilge rats aboard a derelict ship? No. No, they will see free men and freedom! And what the enemy will see is the flash of our cannons. They will hear the ring of our swords, and they will know what we can do. By the sweat of our brows and the strength of our backs, and the courage of our hearts. Gentlemen. Hoist the colors!

this scene is beautiful.
