𖤐 Encyclopedia of Terzo 𖤐

I've been thinking a lot about how the personality of Papa III was created. Tobias set the basic framework, the archetype, the cliché from which he drew. But the real implementation of Papa was on stage, where his image developed through improvisation. Some things were conceived on purpose, some were invented on the spot, some came out unplanned, due to circumstances. Papa turned out to be as lively and unpredictable as life itself. In many senses, he lived on stage.

Thanks to the research of concerned fans, there is quite a lot of material. It occurred to me to collect them in one post for those who want to get acquainted with the canonical image of Terzo. This catalogue uses materials from two users, Cityofmeliora's and myself. You can use them for fanfiction or just for your own amusement. So, allow me to introduce Papa Emeritus III!

Cityofmeliora: Transcriptions and facts

Radley @cityofmeliora has an academic degree in Terzo Studies. He did a great job watching probably 100% of the Terzo videos and bringing us some interesting insights about his personality from the Terzo mines.

Blackbird: Observations and analysis

My modest contribution to terzology was an attempt to summarise observations and look inside the head of the mysterious Papa III.

Well, another day of Very Bad Mood is over, and this is the moment when my brain usually generates spontaneous shit.

Just look at the guy in the picture. He's not broken, he's not alcoholized, he's not depressed. I mean, it's common to imagine that he was in one of those states after his overthrow, in the last days of his life. But look at his posture and the proud position of his head. And the way he slowly sits down in his chair, acting as if he's still the master of this place. Body language never deceives. I think he was still a huge arrogant unyielding thorn in the ass of the Clergy. They decided to kill him because they realized they couldn't deal with him any other way.

Just writing down thoughts that support me. Don't pay attention. Spontaneous Blackbird off.

I have always been a little obsessed with this version of the stained glass window back drop but until today I hadn't bother to look into it in any more detail. After watching Suspiria and being reminded of this by some of the incredible set designs and use of light and colour (and after brain rotting with @positivelyghastly about Terzo and this film) I decided to look into it a bit further and found some interesting stuff.

It was created by Mattias Frisk (who it turns out also designed the original mummy dust) and you can read the detailed write up of the creation process here but other than the the part that really stuck out to me was this:

The overall design is based upon the five wounds of Christ accompanied by nails, and for the middle panels the lance of Longinus in the hands of our mighty lord Satan, bringer of light and destroyer of worlds. I decided to go with the five elements as an overall theme for the window, one element represented in each window, from left to right, water, earth, aether, fire and air (each nameless ghoul has been given an element so I thought that it was a good idea).

The aesthetic of era iii is so thematic and interesting and visually appealing (much like the man himself) I figured others may find this interesting as well!

A new fic translated!

Many thanks for @osiris-iii-bc and @mazeofspades who, despite her busy schedule, took the time to help me with it!

I have to say I am loving this resurgence of Terzo discussion in the fandom. There are so many little things that just got lost to time so all these little snippets from interviews and live shows that show the rich and deep character he is.

Do you have to incorporate it all into your personal headcanons? Of course not but it is undeniably interesting and fun.

So thank you @cityofmeliora for all you are doing and of course @osiris-iii-bc, @blackbird5154, @namelessdumbass (and so many others who share and create amazing things this applies to you too)

I'd like to join in the thanks. "The Terzo Rehabilitation Squad" is doing a great job pulling all these small but important details out of the abyss of oblivion, you are my personal heroes! And thank you @angellayercake for your comments and support, due which I constantly feel that I am not alone in my love for the original Terzo and my work is in demand.

You want to talk more about Terzo 'Frustrated old guy who hates everyone, especially himself' Emeritus? Meliora's first song 'Spirit' quotes a poem by Edgar Allan Poe. I know it's not Papas who write the songs, but Ghoul Writer, and so on, but for some reason I still like to associate this verse with Terzo. I think it's a verse about a visionary who realised the illusory and fruitlessness of his visions and his life. All he has left to do is to perish along with his ghosts of ideas. Here is the full text:

A dark unfathom’d tide Of interminable pride— A mystery, and a dream, Should my early life seem; I say that dream was fraught With a wild, and waking thought Of beings that have been, Which my spirit hath not seen, Had I let them pass me by, With a dreaming eye! Let none of earth inherit That vision on my spirit; Those thoughts I would control As a spell upon his soul: For that bright hope at last And that light time have past, And my worldly rest hath gone With a sigh as it pass’d on I care not tho’ it perish With a thought I then did cherish.

*I was orientated on the Russian translation, I hope it conveys the meaning correctly. This English is so archaic

I became a little bit emotional about the post published by @cityofmeliora , where Terzo said he had a little child. A lot of people take that as a stepping out of the role, but maybe that's not quite true.

  • He didn't say "little ones", he said "little one". If Tobias was referring to his twins, it would make more sense if he said in the plural. So it's possibly a phrase from the character.
  • What if all the pedagogical techniques at the shows were a consequence of Terzo's deep involvement in parenting? The way he communicated with the audience was very similar to the way one interacts with small children.
  • What if Terzo is so reclusive not because he had 'a harem', but because he had a family? He did not reveal his personal life even to his colleagues, appearing only before concerts and disappearing immediately after them. According to the ghoul, he used his own transport, we can assume that nobody knew where he was going.
  • Was he trying to hide his family from the clergy?
  • What if, for this child, he made up the legend of Meliora and the Mysterious Spectre, as a fairy tale?
  • What if he had to distance himself from his family for his many tours?
  • What if they killed not just a man, but the father of a child, the husband of a wife? And the son of a loving mother, as we know from certain statements.
