Hello! Ghost lore question: How old are the papas? Copia's birth year can be placed because of the date in the Kiss The Go-Goat chapter but what about the others? Any thoughts about the brothers' age differences?

made a post about this a while ago, but i'm happy to share again!

Papa Nihil - in Rite Here Rite Now, he tells Cardi “I am almost 80 years old and I’m dead.” it's not clear if he means that he would almost be 80 years old if he were still alive, or if he means that he was almost 80 years old at the time he died, but it kind of gives us a range to work with. he'd have been born in the 1940s.

in my personal headcanon, i place Nihil at the very oldest end of that range, being born in 1940. this is assuming he was talking about his age at death, and assuming he was 79 years old when he died on March 3rd, 2020.

Cardi - we know from Kiss The Go-Goat and RHRN that Sister got pregnant in the later half of 1969, so Cardi and his twin were born in early 1970.

i think Nihil was 29 years old at the time.

Terzo and Secondo - it was stated in several Meliora Era interviews, The Summoning, and Metal Myths that Terzo is only 3 months younger than Secondo. so they’re basically the same age. an interview from 2013 said Secondo was around 50 years old in 2013, and this seems reasonable. so he and Terzo would’ve been born around 1963, give or take a few years.

in my personal headcanon, Secondo and Terzo are about 6 years older than Cardi. i place Secondo being born in November 1963 and Terzo being born in February 1964, when Nihil was 23 years old.

CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE TRANSFORMATION FROM PAPA EMERITUS, WHO IS CREDITED ON OPUS, TO PAPA II? NAMELESS GHOUL: Papa I had sat his years and it was time for the succession. The major difference between the two dudes is probably the age: Papa I was in his 80s whereas Papa II is around 50. A little more mojo. Revolver (May 2013)

Primo - unfortunately, all the info we have on Primo's age is outdated the above quote says Primo was in his 80s when he was the frontman of Ghost, but that’s not possible since his dad wasn’t even that old. (and yes, Primo is Nihil’s son.) with the new information about Nihil’s age, it seems Primo's age has kinda been silently retconned and we’re just supposed to assume Primo was actually younger than previously thought.

personally, i place Primo as 6 years older than Secondo and Terzo, born in 1958 when Nihil was 17-18 years old. so to me, Secondo and Terzo are right in the middle of Primo and Cardi+twin.

notes / thoughts on the Papas' (lack of) involvement in the songwriting process and their connections to the concepts / themes of their albums

thanks for the kind words and thanks for the ask! these were great questions and really enjoyed writing this response. your questions really made me think! (and when i start thinking i always think too hard and take forever to answer– sorry this took so long!)

i'm putting these questions together because i feel they are closely related. this is a topic i've recently been thinking about a lot, actually.

A Ghoul Writer was first mentioned in that 2010 interview with Primo. the Ghoul Writer is Special Ghoul, the Nameless Ghoul character who gave interviews in Eras 2 and 3. in interviews with him, either he himself or the interviewers would usually mention he's the Writer. i'm not linking anything specific here because you can find this happening in pretty much any Era 2 / 3 interview. (though there's one Era 2 Nameless Ghoul interview that refers to the Writer as a separate character.)

the only Papa who wrote his own music was Nihil. the music video for The Future Is A Foreign Land shows that he and his Nameless Ghouls wrote the song together, and he's credited as a writer on Seven Inches Of Satanic Panic. (pic: back of the SIOSP record)

after Nihil, none of the Papas were involved in the songwriting process. everything after Nihil was written by A Ghoul Writer.

PITCHFORK: On the new album, the songs/lyrics are credited to "A Ghoul Writer." Are you this "Ghoul Writer"? If so, what inspired the words? PAPA EMERITUS: I am not the Ghoul Writer. Pitchfork (April 2013)
Does Papa contribute to the composing process? NAMELESS GHOUL: No, Papa doesn’t contribute to the song-writing. Metal Paths (August 2015)

so the later Papas were interpreters of the music, not writers.

as for the question of whether the Papas embody the sins of society or criticize the sins of society by parodying them, i think it's a bit of both– and i think it depends on which perspective we're looking from.

obviously from a real-world perspective, Ghost as a whole is meant to criticize and parody the issues the music is about, and the personality and characterization of each Papa is closely tied to the themes of his album.

from an in-universe lore perspective, as interpreters of the music, each Papa has his own relationship with the themes of his album. i think the Ghoul Writer writes each album for / about the Papa who's going to perform it. however, this is not necessarily a positive gesture.

here are my notes / thoughts on how each Papa relates to the themes of his album:

(trigger warning for mentions of misogynistic violence / rape / forced pregnancy)

Thanks for the great analysis and for sharing the information!

I've always found it frustrating that Papas don't write songs, as the temptation to link them to the themes of their albums is so great. I look forward to your reflection on Meliora and the relationship between Terzo and Secondo. Tag me please!

Nihil as the embodiment of the tendency to escapism

There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge.  Hunter S. Thompson, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

I really dislike this character, but I will try to be impartial as much as possible. So, Nihil is an illustration of a severe escape from reality, a desire to bring back the past, to stop time. In the era of the Third, he brought back the Middle Ages as Papa Zero. In the Cardinal era, he was slipping his old records onto store shelves (so people would know about them? Or rather to create the illusion that they were for sale again?) and regretted not being allowed back on stage as a frontman. Hence his envy of Copia, his constant belittling of him, emphasizing that he hadn't achieved some results and comparing him to himself. Nihil felt that this place legitimately belonged to him, with no regard at all to his health capabilities. Eventually, he got three of his old songs performed in the era of his successor.

Escape into illusion is the main way Nihil interacts with reality. Immersing himself in his enchanting fantasies where everyone is young and beautiful again, he overlooked a fateful decision and allowed his sons to be killed. The illusions are like a membrane through which he perceives the world around him. Sister got him to appoint Cardinal as frontman because from the depths of his erotic fantasy he answered ‘yes’ to her and that became an answer to her question. In fact, he did not make any decision.

Maybe inhaling oxygen from the life support system is having that effect on his brain. Sometimes I think it's not just oxygen, but something else mixed in. He takes a breath from the tank when he sees Sister wrapped in bandages and confined to a hospital bed - and the semi-darkness of the room immediately turns to sunlight, everyone becomes beautiful and happy, and Sister flirts with him instead of wheezing. Reality becomes bearable. We also hear the sound of breathing into an oxygen mask (similar to Darth Vader's breathing) in the background of the scene in episode 7 when Nihil sees the 'ghosts' of young Sister and himself. Perhaps all that is happening is his hallucination caused by inhaling ether.

Nihil is so incapable of accepting his current moment of existence that he always keeps his oxygen mask at the ready. He probably sees Sister as the strong, active person who will contact reality in his place while he enjoys his fantasies. We know what Sister is doing behind his back: killing his children and promoting her son, giving him as much patronage and privilege as she can.

Eventually, in the RHRN movie, Nihil seems to finally become able to make contact with reality: he is already a ghost and no longer uses a breathing support system. Sister makes him remember his paternal duties, and he gives parental guidance to Copia. Along the way, he realizes his place in life, in his family and at work. He is finally here and now, not in his fantasy world. It took him dying to do it.

Well, better late than never.

My head has been generating a lot of theories about Terzo these past few days.

Many indicate that his mythological prototype is Lucifer, and he is replaying his path of the fall. Lucifer rebelled against his father and was thrown from heaven.

What if Nihil remained in charge even during the reign periods of his sons and his opinion was to be reckoned with? But we all know what kind of ruler Nihil is.

Merliora's theme is a world of absent God and man's ambitions in it. What if Terzo pushed aside Nihil and tried to rule himself? So at the end of the era, Nihil came back and "threw him out of heaven". Next comes the Prequelle - thematically, the era of the Lord's punishment.

Of course, this still involves Sister Emperator, who was clearly the grey eminence behind Nihil's back. It was convenient for her to control the will-less Nihil, but it was undesirable for her that Terzo would interfere in their duo by taking power away from her obedient puppet.

Judging by the way Terzo had placed his hand threateningly on her shoulder in one of the Summonings, he had gotten to her as well. He knew she was the real source of decisions in the Ministry. Thus, he had created two enemies for himself at once: Nihil and Sister.

You know the rest.

My friend and tarologist Ariadne Hawkins has made her variant of Tarot reading interpretations. I've tried to translate it to English.

In the first photo, we can see a gift for which a sacrifice was needed that radically changes the personality. It takes almost death to go to another state.

In the second - the deceit of someone who trusted you for the sake of your own goal. And in connection with this - pangs of conscience.

The third is very difficult to interpret without understanding the questions on the positions. This is probably about children - we can see their 4 cards on the right. The first is full of passion and fire, he is used to solve problems through blind rage. The second looks cold and calculating, he only seems objective. In fact, it is a manipulator. The third is a new beginning, the unknown, a jump into the abyss without thinking about the consequences. The fourth flies ahead, however, seeing at the same time a very clear goal.

Perhaps the last 4 cards carry the symbolism not only of the Tarot, but also visual. The abyss, the white horse… the attributes of the Third and Fourth Papas. Symbols of the Nihil's sons.
